Amazing quality for a fair price.......2007-12-13
I've never really been a sound snob, so simple ear bud headphones have been my routine, but I got sick of not being able to hear stuff with ear buds if I was mowing the lawn or using a snowblower.
I bought these a couple of months ago and love them. I have a REALLY loud snowblower and I was amazed at how well I could hear while snow blowing the other day. I listen to podcasts on my iPod, and spoken word was always impossible to hear while doing anything noisy. But these headphones make it so that even the loudest noises become a very low hum while the music or spoken word comes through really great without seeming too loud.
Like I say, this is my first pair of noise-cancelling headphones I've ever owned so I can't compare them other brands, but I'm very impressed at this pair and how the outside noises are greatly reduced or eliminated.

I farm and drive a tractor which is quite noisy. These seemed to cut the noise down so it was barley audible. Sound quality is good and there is a lot of bass, which I like.
Solid value for short trips.......2007-09-25
This is a solid value, I have used the industry standard Bose on international flights where they are offered in business class and above and I will compare my experience to that. Function: 3 stars, value bonus +1.
1. Noise Cancelling: The noise cancelling capability is not as good as the Bose, but it is good enough. You can notice the difference, sufficient block out the hum of jet engines. If you absolutely need better, you'll have to pay.
2. Comfort, reasonable comfort. Will depend on how your ears and head are shaped. Suitable for transcontinental flights, international might get sore.
3. Travel: This is actually where they are better than the bose. They fold up nicely into a bag, the Bose are stored in a hard case. Nicer, but take up more space.
This is a solid value product, not perfect but for 1/10th the best you get 70% of the value.

I completely agree with the reviews below. These headphones are an amazing value. I use them on airplanes and they really cut the jet noise considerably.
The only problem I've had is accidentally leaving them turned on and draining the battery. Also, once a bumped the on button putting them in my brief case, which drained the battery. Now I simply remove the battery when I store headphones in the carry bag. It's no big deal.
Disappointing performance.......2007-09-17
After reading many reviews about these headphones, I was quite excited to order them. However, I was very disappointed once I received them. In my opinion, these headphones did a very poor job cancelling out background noise. In fact, if it weren't for a faint humming noise, I couldn't even tell when the headphones were on or off. I returned these, and am once again on the hunt for a reasonably priced set of noise cancelling headphones.

As one of the first of the mainstream computer manufacturers to develop a laptop around the new Intel Core Duo processor, Dell has much riding on the success of the new Inspiron 9400. The 1.66GHz Core Duo processor will either sink or swim in Dells mainstream portables depending upon its reception here. Matched with 1GB of PC2-5300 DDR2 that promises to run even the thirstiest applications with aplomb, the major yardstick is not whether Core Duo can keep pace with the Pentium M (Dothan), but whether it can perform without reducing battery life to minutes rather than hours.
Yet having said that, it is easy to think that the Inspirons sole point of interest is the aforementioned CPU. You see, this is Dells attempt at an all-in-one laptop: a workhorse that sits as comfortably in office attire as it does in casuals. With fast-access email buttons, ample memory and a weight of 3.6kg, its a suitable office-based and on-the-go machine. Yet with Media Center bundled in, to give the control buttons at the foot of the casing something to do, and a 17in widescreen display, the Inspiron seems built for handling movies as comfortably as Excel spreadsheets.
Visually, the arctic silver and white casing is an interesting reworking from Dell. The colour scheme and layout of the keyboard and tracker pad hint at a classiness that some might dismiss as tacky trend-chasing. But it actually works rather well, giving the screen a comfortable border in gentle silver rather than harsh black.

Display color is terrible!.......2007-11-12
I purchased the Dell 1720 Inspiron to replace my old Inspiron 8600 (which had been a great computer for me). On the fourth day of using my new 1720, the color on the display became mysteriously "washed out". I could barely read the words on the screen because it was so dim. I researched this problem and found MANY other people who had posted the same problem (many people mention it is a 17" Dell problem). My research confirmed that it was nothing I had done to alter the screen's appearance, it had "mysteriously" happened in all of the postings I read. I spent a painfully long time on the phone with Dell's customer support (even more frustrating was trying to understand the person on the other line through his very thick accent). They have not been able to solve my problem, and have scheduled me for a call-back. I intend on sending this computer back and asking for a full refund. I'll get an HP instead. Good luck!
