Didn't Work.......2007-08-20
This product was super easy to set up - just plug in the USB or FireWire cable and it's good to go. The software was quick to install.
That would all be good, except:
The software messed up my desktop settings. Not a huge deal, but each time I restart, I had to select my desktop view preferences/customization again.
The drive has a fairly loud fan. (Other drives are silent.)
The drive burned 6 audio CDs perfectly fine.
Then I tried burning the lightscribe label. It did not work at all with the USB cable. I got "communication error" messages. Then I tried using the FireWire cable. It burned 6 labels fine. Then it would burn half-way through a label and stop, and I would get the same "communication error" message. This happened several times, until I gave up.
I didn't bother trying tech support - things should work correctly right out of the box. And tech support phone hours were not 24/7, so I wouldn't have been able to try.
I ended up getting another drive. I uninstalled the software that came with this Mad Dog drive, and my desktop settings are back to normal.
Works great with Mac.......2007-08-04
I was pleased to find that this drive works great on a Mac, even though it does not mention this fact anywhere on the box. I was disappointed to find that Apple's DVD Player (in Tiger 10.4) will not play DVD content from this drive, but this is Apple's problem, not Mad Dog's. The drive is a bit noisy as it has a fan that never seems to go to sleep, but there is a convenient switch on the back of the drive to simply turn the thing off when it is not in use. I have only tested the drive with FireWire and have not used the LightScribe functionality.
Excellent Piece of Equipment.......2007-05-26
When the CD burner/DVD-ROM drive went out on my four year old Gateway PC, I decided to buy an external replacement drive. I read a lot of reviews. Some of the drives were noisy in operation, some were a bit flimsy, some operated intermittently (especially the Sonys), some had poor software included. I went to my local military exchange and found that they had this state-of-the-art double layer DVD/CD burner available. I decided to take a flyer with it. So far, I'm really glad I did. The drive is well built and comes in a glossy black and silver case. Both USB 2.0 and Firewire cables are included in the box, as is a stand so you can place the drive on its side. The installation instructions are quite clear and easy. Installation couldn't have been easier. I plugged the drive into a power outlet and connected it to the computer via a USA 2.0 hub. Upon bootup, the computer immedicately recognized it and Windows XP installed the necessary drivers. Installation took about three minutes total. The drive is quiet compared to most I've heard. It makes a muted hum when running full tilt. So far, it has read everything I put into it, CD and DVD. Tonight I will try to burn some disks and try the Lightscribe feature. I'll update the review and let you know how everything works. Oh, it also comes with a TWO year warranty instead of the usual one year.
Darn good product.......2007-02-11
Product was very simple to install, plug and play. Instructions were perfect, directs you to web for most up to date lightscribe drivers. Roxio installed fine (on a Vaio), but didnt seem to run real well, but no matter because I had been running full Nero for some time. All features of this new double sided, lightscribe drive were available under it.
Burns DVDs lightening fast (as compared to my old 2X), and the lightscribe is "pretty darn cool". Eliminates most needs to do labels! (I say most only because it takes much more time to burn the label than to burn DVD so may not want it on all...). I did not try double sided, but that was not what made me buy.
Buy it! Or, wait until Lightscribe 1.2 hardware comes out (supposed to be better contrast on labels).

Fastest I've had yet.......2007-10-08
I've been very pleased with the speed of this device. I've tried 2 other 16 gb USB drives and while they worked fine, they were slow. I keep my email client (Thunderbird) on the USB stick, and using this device, it is as useable as if it were installed on my hard drive. Other drives were too slow. Only negative, and it is minor, is that it is BIG. Definitely a conversation piece. You will have to use the supplied dongle if you plan on using lateral USB ports as this device will block ports used on either side. Small item to cope with considering the speed.
Great little Device.......2007-09-19
I bought this 16GB device a few weeks ago. As soon as I got it home, I formated it with ext3 for a Fedora box. I have no need for outdated and trouble prone windows NTSB or FAT16 or any windows stuff at all.
This little device is fast and very reliable, and stores a little more than 16GB. very nice.
I will probably buy another one or two.

Please keep in mind that FAT32 formatting has a 4GB file size limit. Actualy, I think it's 2 Bytes less than 4GB. NTFS is unlimited based on partition size. If you want a file larger that 4GB, you need to use NTFS.
Flawed.......2007-05-22
I just bought this flash drive and found it to be extremely flawed. The problem is this... while it formats and shows that it is 15.3GB, every time I tried moving a file larger than 2GB to the freshly formatted drive, it would error saying there was not enough room. Small files were no problem. Now I had 11GB left when i tried to move the 4GB file so it wasn't for lack of room. I reformatted the flash drive 2 times and tried it on 2 different PCs which both had Windows XP and Service Pack 2 installed.
Just a warning for those of you that are interested.
