Buh-bye, Maxtor / Seagate.......2007-06-13
Once upon a time, Maxtor made a solid external HDD. I know, because my previous Maxtor external drive is still percolating away after nearly five years. However, I outgrew it, which is when I made the mistake of getting *this* unit. After a few config problems, I got it working for my Mac and one of the PCs -- for all of four weeks, after which the drive apparently committed suicide (after emitting a series of noises I hope never to hear from a HDD again). It's still under warranty, so I could in theory ship this unit back and get another one, but I lose the data that way; if this is the best the Seagate-owned iteration of Maxtor can do, I'm better off popping the case and seeing whether there's enough disk left to attempt a rescue on. Utter waste of money, not to mention years of brand loyalty.

I bought the Maxtor not only because of the external storage but also because it has the ability to hook a printer and access it remotely. I thought that would save me from getting another device to hook up my printer to my wireless network. Not until after I did it, did I find out that it does not support printers that are a combination printer, fax, copier. Access it good when it is I am hooked up via an ethernet cable but extremely slow when I am accessing it wirelessly.

I have no idea why but it just stopped working. Maxtor wants me to send it back to them and then after 10 business days they will send me a new one, so between shipping and waiting time i will be out of a drive for three weeks minimum. I have tons of data on this thing so im not comfortable sending it to anyone. I'm gonna buy a buffalo linkstation instead
Don't buy this for a Macintosh-based network.......2007-01-20
I read the reviews here and figured this would be a good buy. My chief concern was the noise of the thing, but it turned out to be quite reasonable.
However, the set up has been disasterous. The unit ships with no Mac software (despite claiming Mac compatibility all over the box) and once you do download and install it, it is structured differently to the browser UI. Which is confusing.
Functionality via either desktop client or browser is different and inconsistent, and I was unable to unmount the drive when I didn't want it. The drive shows up in iTunes as a shared library but is inaccessible, and the Drag & Sort feature (fully outlined in the Mac User Guide) is apparently not available on the Mac - eh?
I covered all this with Tech Support, who basically shrugged and said that's the way it is - "perhaps Apple can help". None of this is a deal-breaker by any means (I can still use the drive) but when you're buying a backup device for security of your data, you want to know that it's being handled securely and consistently, no? Big thumbs down from me.
Love This Thing!.......2006-12-05
I've had this for about 6 months now and it's worked flawlessly and has changed the way I manage may home network (4 PCs). I can host my favorites and other files centrally.
It works great with my Second Copy backup software to backup tons of pictures, music, and other documents. I also use it to store and restore disk images of various PCs.
I keep it in the basement, so noise is no problem.
There's probably newer models now, so all I can say is that Maxtor did a great job with this one.

Ritek and Ridata.......2007-11-09
I began digital photography ten years ago . Dependable, high speed memory became an imperative so I sought advice from experts in the field. I was told, by more than one source, that Ritek/Ridata and Verbatim were the industry standards for high speed and long term data storage.
That advice was priceless. I have consistently used Ritek CF pro cards in six Nikon digital cameras up to the D200 with NEVER a problem. In fact I still use some of my older cards. I have never experienced data loss and the transfer rates have been exceptional.

Flawless Performance.......2007-08-27
I've used both the 2GB and 4GB versions of this card in my Nikon D200 for nearly a year and it has performed flawlessly. I did not purchase these cards from Amazon, but from a local camera shop. Having never heard of this brand before, I was a bit skeptical. They offered it at a very good price and used the card themselves with no problems. I have pushed these cards to near their limit and never lost an image. While other cards appear to have a more prominent reputation (e.g., Lexar and SanDisk), they do not match the performance of the RiDATA CF card for a similar price or are far more expensive. I feel like all I am paying for is the advertising. I'll be buying more of these cards so I am able to take up to 1,000 images in a day--that would be 3 more 4GB cards. Highly recommended.
Don't use with the Maxxum 7D.......2007-06-13
If you are using a Max 7D, DON'T BUY THIS CARD! It will fail after about 130-140 frames if shooting raw + small jpg with no hope of recovery. Not sure of life expectancy if shooting in other than raw and sm. jpg. The card will be destroyed. 2 cards tried with same result in both cards. Other RiData products are of similar service quality. Write/Read errors start to occur after just a couple of uses. That's my experience with RiData CF cards in a Max 7D.
