For the price, may not worth it.......2007-12-20
Quite honestly, at that price I expected a much better performance.
The first and the most essential characteristic of a noise-canceling headphone to be satisfied with is the level of noise it cancels. A majority of the noise canceling headphones are made by well known brands, so the sound quality will not be significantly different. So, based on that single aspect, the noise canceling feature of this phone is as good as its early 30$ priced brother (HN110). In other words, it is not good.
I can safely say, Jabra NC headphone that you can buy at a half price is much more effective. The basic measure that I used to measure its performance, is the performance it has achieved when there is significant traffic noise in the background. ATH-ANC7, for instance, can cancel a very big portion of that traffic noise, and almost all of the remaining noise will be masked by the headphone's own NC-based background noise, which is non-disturbing and at a reasonably low level. In the case of Philips, you hear a major portion of that outside noise in a way that kind of NC-based background noise cannot cover what the NC feature cannot suppress. In short, noise canceling feature does not work well.
If you are going to use this headphone at a low noise place, then it may work for you, but if you want more from the noise-canceling feature, then go with ATH-ANC7 or a headphone performing at a similar level.
Update: I don't know if all of them have the same problem, but, mine catches AC static noise quite easily when the NC feature is on (meaning a return or an exchange is on the way). I can hear the static from Laptop's AC adapter through the headphone jack, at a very loud volume. Even the cable touching somewhere near the laptop would create that noise. Interestingly, that has never happened with HN110, and of course, none of the other NC headphones I tried make that noise, too (including Panasonic, ATH, Logitech, and Jabra ones). So, be careful, if this is not a random defect, you may not be able to use your headphone anywhere you want...

I have a pair of Sennheiser PXC 250 earphone which are far superior. I also have a lower cost Altec Lansing noise cancellation earphones which I would also rate better than these Philips earphones. I may well return them to the them and get my moeny back.

I don't have anything to compare these to but i have been very impressed with my pair. Very well built and comfortable to wear. Does a very good job blocking out background noise and rumble. They don't block out talking but i really don't think any noise canceling headphones do. I have worn them on several charter bus rides in the past few weeks and i don't know how i ever lived without them

These headphones are a truly increadible deal. I've had two other noise canceling pairs in the past, and neither could hold a finger to these. These are incredibly comfortable. The foam pads feel like pillows, and seal out almost all of the mid-range ambient noise. The interior of the earcups are tilted, angling away from the back of the ear for extra comfort. The sound quality is awesome in passive mode, and once the noise cancelation is turned on, it becomes unbelievable. The highs are solid but not screaming, the bass is tight and responsive, with minute to no distortion or speaker crackle, and the mids are well-balanced and realistic. None of the frequencies overpower the others, resulting in ultra-realistic sound, even from my average-sounding iPod Nano. The noise cancelation is purely active, no white noise used, so if the room is already quiet, you can experience what true silence sounds like. The extras Philips throws in, like the detacheable cord, are nice as luxuries. One bit of advice: when the battery starts dying (you'll be able to tell, there's an increase in speaker crackle with the cancelation on) replace it immediately. Overall, long plane and car rides are now enjoyable.
