Very comfortable open headphones.......2007-12-14
I've mainly preferred and worked with closed headphones before (most notably, Sennheiser HD280) but I figured it was time to try a good mid-price range open pair. Realize these are "open", and some sound does leak out, and you can hear outside sounds. I was looking for something that would let me do the latter, and these fit the bill.
I am very happy. Sound seems generally balanced in all ranges. I'm really not a huge audiophile, but these sound really good for music (iPod and computer), TV, among other audio sources. And they'll probably sound even better after "burn-in".
They're extremely comfortable and not too heavy on your head. My ear fits inside the comfortable ear cushions without difficulty. Cord length is about right for home listening, but at about 10 feet/3 meters, it's too long for general use with an iPod/portable music player.
I'm sure there are phones that sound better (and worse) than these, but these are a nice mid-level Sennheiser phone for listening to any kind of music.
Enjoyable experience so far.......2007-08-21
I purchased these as a midrange, mid price option to use at home while I work.
When I got them, I realized that I got a bit more than I expected; well put together, comfortable padding that isn't vinyl so it won't stick to your face while you are listening (or peel off as in the case of my old headsets.)
As for the sound, everyone is always going to have different opinions because everyone hears at different levels. For me, these headsets brought forward notes that were otherwise muddled in my old ones. Voices are rich and clearer, even the little breathe drawn in at the end a line is noticeable. The bass is solid but not overwhelming giving a pleasurable experience rather than a deafening pound throughout my head.
I can't say they keep out all the sound from the outside world, but really, I don't think any headset can truly offer that to a good ear. These make a good attempt at giving you a bit of one on one with your favorite artists.
Too easily overdriven, not enough bass.......2007-06-08
The first time I used these headphones I overdrove them, trying to get a satisfying amount of bass out of them. I overdrove them with a yamaha 50 watt/channel reciever via the headphone jack - with minor clipping only, no major distortion. They now crackle louder than my popcorn maker (the microwave oven) even when driven with my computer soundcard. They are great if you love the "treble control" at or near max. I know I should have purchased a studio monitor set of 'phones now. The SPL of these 'phones is great if you are driving them with a mp3/portable CD they may be fine. My 1981 set of Koss headphones ($24.95 at the time)are far superior. I have yet to obtain warranty coverage - and would advise anyone thinking of buying these that enjoy ANY music with a decent amount of bass, including classical music with demanding passages, avoid these headphones. 0 stars in my book.
HD 485.......2007-05-15
Excellent for small device sound reproduction. Works well with my iPods and Macs. Worth then money.
Really good headphones........2007-03-15
Listen Up!!!
These babies are some of the best from my experience, which is rather limited. I can say, though, that I've heard some things on songs that I didn't realize were there, for instance:
The song, "the downward spiral, the bottom", by nine inch nails off, "further down the spiral" is an amazing song anyway, and when I heard it through these phones, I heard sounds coming, not only from my right and left, but from underneath me, and from within my head, as well as from an undefined place away from me. It was the weirdest thing. Of course those sounds came to me from the right and left, but the headphones brought out those strange dimensions to the music.
All frequencies are superb, and the bass is full. Good for Metal, Country, really anything not too soft, as it is an open design, so real quiet music tends to be drowned out by outside noise, like my vacuum.
One caveat: the cord is substantial, 10 feet long. I would rather have a 4 foot cord or so, but that's simply because I use it with my portable, not my home stereo.
Overall, very good and comfortable headphones.

Doesn't REALLY come with backup software.......2007-11-14
I like the design and flexibility of this drive. It seems to work very well. My gripe is that the 'Home Edition' My Book drives are advertised as coming with backup software. It is advertised this way on the box as well as on the WD website. The reality is that a 30 day trial of backup software is included. If you want to continue to use it, it's a $30 fee to purchase the software.
This is just disappointing more than anything else. In my opinion, it is a blatant lie to say that it comes with software when they really only include a 30 day trial.
Maybe this is just a mistake on the part of WD and they will correct it. But for now, be aware.
If you don't care about the backup software, then this seems like a good drive.
Won't power up; little documentation.......2007-11-05
Bought one.
The directions that come with it are non-existent and the web page support doesn't address my problem and technical support is closed.
The power switch won't get an LED to come on even though I can hear the drive humming.
It doesn't appear on the desktop.
Unhappy; gas and time will be wasted on the return.
