The headphones' noise-canceling circuit reduces ambient noise with a phase-canceling process and provides a noise reduction of 14 dB at 300 Hz. The Sony MDR-NC50 Noise Canceling Headphones uses tiny, built-in sensors that send equal-but-opposite canceling signals to the headphone drivers. This phase-canceling process "blocks" outside noise and is especially effective on noises like air-conditioners or transportation rumble.
The Sony MDR-NC50 Noise Canceling Headphones allows you to turn this feature on-and-off with a "Noise Canceling" switch on the headphone housing. The function can run for up to 30 hours on one AAA battery, and with the ability to switch the feature off, you'll be able to conserve your battery life and use noise canceling only when it's needed.
Sony has not scrimped on comfort with the MDR-NC50. These headphones feature an ear-conscious design with soft earpads, an adjustable band to fit nearly any head, and a slim folding style that is perfect for travelers.

I was looking into the Bose noise canceling headphones, willing to pay the big bucks, but read some reviews of these and decided to take a chance and ordered them, I am very happy with the purchase. The noise canceling works great and they are very comfortable. I can't say how they rate next to the Bose, because I was not able to compare, but for the price I am very pleased with my purchase.

My Bose headphones fell apart at the headband-phones joint, and I didn't feel like parting with another $300, so I picked up the Sonys. They are a little more sturdy, shouldn't break apart in the same way. The noise cancellation works fine, and the noise reduction even when they are off is good (I do follow the FAA rule of turning off all electronics for take-off and landing). The only downside I have noticed is that if you press on the outside of the headphones you get a pretty annoying feedback. It startled me awake the first time it happened. Not a perfect solution, but still great headphones.

I did research on the web for various noise cancelling headsets. I wanted a pair due to the amount of time I spend on airplanes. This Sony one had the most positive reviews for the price. However, there certainly are disadvantages. Here is my summary:
Advantages:
Reasonable price compared to competition
Fair job of noise cancellation
Adjustable
Disadvantages
These put a lot of pressure on the ears causing discomfort after about 30 minutes use.
The top of the headset is hard and starts hurting the top of your head after abour 60 minutes.
The headsets do not fold up so they are bulky in your carry-on luggage.

I feel like I read every review on Amazon for noise cancelling headphones, and it was a good investment of my time! These headphones were a lot cheaper than the Bose ones but just as good quality-wise. I even wore them a good deal of my plane flight without the noise cancelling feature turned on, and they still helped a great deal. I haven't tried them yet with music, as the main reason I bought them is for noise cancelling. I highly recommend them, especially if you don't want to spend the money on the Bose ones!
Not worth the money.......2007-09-27
I recently purchased this set and used it on several trips (aircraft)
They did not perform as expected, got a popping noise in the right speaker when listening to music and noise canceling at the same time. Decided to try a pair of Bose (more money of course) but wow, what a difference. This sony product was a waste of money.

The Lowell 25LVC 25W, 50LVC 50W, and 100LVC 100W are all single gang units that mount in a minimum depth of 2.125. Choice of plate style includes brushed stainless steel, standard plastic white and ivory, Decora-style white and ivory, or adhesive dial scale for rackmount applications. All units have phoenix-style removable screw termination strips for pre-wire with capacity for 14ga wire. Units are 3dbstep or 1.5dbstep as noted. Models with priority relay 24VDC 5mA allow emergency and paging signals to bypass override the attenuator.

Very good product........2007-02-13
I received mine on time. It looks and feel like it has been refurbished. It work for what i wanted. I am not able to autenticate the software on Microsoft so you all know what that means. Bug again no problems so far except the USB port broke. I dont think it was me, but it was a little fragile. Otherwise it works perfectly for what i need it which is school and light internet research.
This seller is sending computer with a pirated version of Windows XP. They would not give me a product key to update my computer. I am having problems due to this. I would never buy from them again. I think that if the XP bundle comes install must be legitimate. Please someone contact me back. Is unspeakable amazon is allowing this!
