We purchased the Certance CD 72 internal tape drive to replace a seagate DDS4 tape drive that failed in our Dell Poweredge 4600 server.

Great price, flawless performance!!.......2004-11-14

I decided to take a $40 bet on my first DVD writer; the total came to about $44 and was shipped promptly by an excellent amazon seller named "kittywater". It came with the essential Nero v6.0 software for burning CDs/DVDs. The DVD writer seamlessly reads and writes CDs and all the incarnations of DVDs (DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW). The write process is very fast, way faster than my old CD-RW drive. Previously it would take me about 90 minutes to burn an hour's worth of music onto a CD using my CD-RW drive. With this DVD burner it takes 5 - 7 mins (and this is with my four-year-old AMD 733 Mhz desktop PC). There is an 8MB buffer memory on the DVD writer itself, which immensely helps performance by allowing local storage of data being fetched (and not relying on the computer's RAM). The read/write speeds are as follows: CD-ROM read 40X, CD-R write 24X, CD-RW write 10X. DVD (all kinds) read 8X, DVD+R write 8X, DVD+RW write 4X. This is faster than products selling for as much as 50% more. Average access time is 130 ms, and max data trasfer rate is 33 MB/sec.

Even though the drive is supposed to read DVD-ROM, I am yet to succeed in playing a DVD movie in this drive. But that may be because the Nero software does not have a DVD movie player (perhaps you need to install something like InterVideo DVD or WinDVD). I have also managed to "erase" a pre-written DVD+RW Ridata disc, and fill it with new files to the brim (4344 Mb out of the available 4400 Mb disc capacity). So the "rewrite" function definitely works. The Nero software has a universal "interface" for all the different functions the drive performs. I have found the Nero CD player leaving a lot to be desired.

All in all, a GRREAT! buy for $40!
