Customer Reviews:
Sleek keyboard and mouse.......2007-12-29
A few things that surprised me are, one, the keyboard is set up like a laptop one, very short and compact, so the configuration is a little different. I do like the look, but it'll take a little time to find all the keys. The mouse is very sesitive to the touch so you don't have to have a lot of space to use it. It's also taking a little time to get used to because it passes over the spot I want if I move it too fast. The mouse can either sit on the desk, and will turn off automatically, then turn back on with the touch of a button, or it can dock on the keyboard, to turn off, and be removed to turn back on. I also enjoy this feature because my kids are less likely to run off with it when it's attatched to something. It's worth every penny with the space that is given to remove the wires.
The Kensington Masterpiece.......2007-12-11
I am delighted with the Kensington Ci70 wireless mouse and keyboard. The design and feel of both is far superior to anything I have purchased previously (and I've been through many mice and keyboards in my time).
In particular the keyboard typing experience is far better than some of the chunky, clacky buttons I have used in the past. This feels very smooth, quiet and positive and I just love how it seems to makes my typing so much more accurate, rarely missing keys or catching the side of another and causing errors. The mouse is great too with it's automatic shut down after not being used for a time, great little USB aerial that slots into the underside of the mouse when being transported. Cool product!
Poor software support.......2007-11-30
The keyboard itself is great and (most) keys work very well. I had trouble with the left ctrl key, I had to press it squarely and firmly to get it to work most of the time.
The mouse feels cheap and I didn't use it at all. It also does not have any extra functions to it, basic two-button with a scroll wheel.
The main issue I had was the software. The drivers were picked up immediately by Windows and installed fine. Kensington has not released a software program to configure the hot keys on this particular keyboard. The program they recommended was obviously for another keyboard and did not have the proper hot key layout. The software kind of worked, I was able to program some of the keys, just not all of them.
Then my computer began to get buggy. It would think that different keys were being held down, mainly the home key. This made it impossible to type anything. A reboot would fix the problem temporarily. I eventually uninstalled the keyboard software after testing this further and have not had problems since.
In closing, I am sending the keyboard back and will not be getting it replaced.
Probably not for you. Definitely not for programmers........2007-11-29
This keyboard and mouse both look so stylish. I really wanted to like them, but they are horrible.
The mouse:
It sometimes doesn't respond to movements and clicks, they are just lost in the ether. Clicking seems to take a lot pressure which is highly annoying. It also goes to sleep after only a few minutes and will only wake up to clicks not movement.
The keyboard:
The keyboard also sometimes seems to "lag". Keystrokes seem to be lost but then show up a second later ( after you pressed it 3 times ).
Also, this keyboard is just not designed for easy use of any "special" keys. For basic typing and the occasional backspace or arrow key ( which you would have to look down for ) it would probably be fine.
Do not under any circumstances try to do programming on this keyboard. They rearranged and shrunk everything that you need for programming. It has a useless apple key I keep pressing instead of ctrl and I have to look down to press ANYTHING other than letters.
Summary:
But if you are much more comfortable on a laptop keyboard and do basic typing but don't use many of the "special" keys, then this keyboard might work, it is quite stylish at least.
Rant:
Who exactly is this product intended for?
It seems like it has conflicting features that don't make any sense together in the same product.
Is it for laptop users that want a separate mouse/keyboard?
Why would you want an external keyboard that is small and squished together just like your laptop keyboard? Doesn't that defeat the whole point of having a separate keyboard? Likewise, if you go to the trouble of using a separate mouse with your laptop you probably want one that doesn't suck.
Is it for Mac's or Windows?
Why not just put all the keys on it and that way everyone who uses it will have several useless keys to accidently press.
Actually I reread the product description and it sums it up nicely, its for people that want a separate keyboard and mouse for their laptop when traveling but don't have enough travel space for one that doesn't suck.
Not For Programmers.......2007-11-29
I bought this keyboard for work (programming) because I tend to have tenditis flairups and this keyboard looked like the keys would be very soft to press. Well the keys do feel great ( especially for anyone already use to typing on a laptop keyboard ) and it probably would be great for normal text / document typing, but for programming it is driving me bonkers. This keyboard takes up very little space, but the way they did that is by squashing a bunch of keys all together. I have to stop and stare at the keyboard if I want to use any of the following keys: f keys, arrow keys, page up/down, delete, backspace, home, end. None of these are in their normal places and also reduced in size. There is also only a left windows key not a right one ( something to think about if you have a habit of using the right one ), but most damning for programming is the reduced size and even POSITION of the ctrl and alt keys. I keep hitting the apple key ( which does nothing ) when I think I'm hitting the ctrl key, so ctrl-c for copy and I end up typing 'c' and deleting whatever I had selected, ctrl-z for undo, oops missed again and typed a 'z'.
