OK for rock music, midrange sound is heavily colored.......2005-07-29
First of all, Amazon.com neglected to list the model number for these earbuds: RP-HV288A. The last letter "A" designates the blue color - Panasonic also makes an "S" model that is silver, and an "R" model that is red.
I got these earbuds just to see what I was missing. Even though I was quite happy with my Sennheiser MX 500 earbuds, I wondered if there were earbuds with more bass and high frequencies out there.
As you might guess from the listed frequency response range, these earbuds have both a bass boost and a high frequency boost.
I discovered that this boost is OK for the typical staccato beat found in the drums and guitars of rock music, but absolutely wrecks the sound quality of smoother, more orchestral instruments such as trumpets, violins, woodwinds, etc. The smooth midrange sound of choral backgrounds also gets distorted.
However, ultimately, it all depends on what you are used to listening to. Having been a Sennheiser fan for thirty years, I have become accustomed to hearing a certain clarity and fidelity in the midrange that is completely absent in these earbuds.
Compared to the Sennheiser MX 400 or MX 500 earbuds, these are somewhat cheaper. I have not tested the waterproof feature.
If you love heavy bass and sharp high frequencies, these buds are for you. If you like hearing the ringing clarity of midrange musical instruments and vocals, get the Sennheiser earbuds.

These are good cheap earbuds. I'd venture a guess that they're as good as you're gonna get for under $20... certainly the best at $10. Now, don't go expecting Shure quality out of these... they're CHEAP earbuds.
That said, they are rather nice little earbuds. They seem to have a reasonable fidelity, and the bass is some of the best I've heard out of a pair of earbuds. I would certainly recommend these to anyone who was looking to replace the "standard" earbuds (completely crap) that come with most portable music devices nowadays. Just understand that they're not audiophile devices.

Oh my god! These are way better than the Apple earbuds. They stay in, handle the highs and lows infinitely better and have the l-shaped plug. And cheap! iPod earbuds are in the trash.

I'm a big fan of the leather and faux-leather iPod cases, and this looked like a great one to acommonpany the gift of a new 30 gig iPod video. The iPod fits in with no slippage (it won't move around and scratch up the screen), and the small magnet holds the top shut when not in use. My only problem with it is that when you're trying to watch a movie, you have to either hold the top flap behind it with your hand or balance it on top of the headphone jack, otherwise it will try to flap down and cover the screen. Just something to keep in mind.
