I bought this Vizio 37" model at a retailer yesterday. I'm not sure if the newer models have a better contrast ratio, or if the specs are a typo above. Manufacturers are always trying to improve, so probably they've just recently improved it? 1000:1 is still fairly low compared to higher end models. That being said, any flat screen TV is a vast improvement if you are stepping up from an old CRT-based TV. So I'm very happy. Essentially the blacks aren't quite as black as the really high end LCD models. Big deal. There are probably other issues a videophile would point out...
It's great value for the price, and I am really pleased with the number of inputs. Particularly the ease of switching between PC, TV, DVD, Tivo, etc. I used to have video inputs switching using my amp, but that isn't really needed now. The PC input works well, and it seems to sense my laptops resolution and size things appropriately. The remote control is set up to switch the inputs very easily, which is important. CNET also pointed out that the PIP controls are also easily accessible on the remote, rather than buried in a menu, another plus. Set-up was very easy, and you don't need to spend time with the manual. I was considering an Olevia LCD (supposedly better picture, but I wasn't able to compare side-by-side), but I think the Vizio wins on ease of use.
Another review referred to Samsung as the parent company of Vizio, but I found that Vizio is the brand of AmTRAN, a taiwanese manufacturer. However, since many TVs are contract manufactured, you really never know who's making what. There are very few fabs (~5) where large LCD screens are made - Samsung is the biggest LCD screen manufacturer, and they have a couple of those fabs. However, those LCD screens often get shipped elsewhere for assembly and integration. It's possible that AmTRAN has contract manufactured the full assembled TV for Samsung in the past. In general, Taiwanese manufacturers are higher end than Chinese. So AmTRAN is fine with me.
I rate 4 stars just because it's not the best picture available. But it's a phenomenal value, and you can't notice a slightly poorer picture unless you line it up next to a very high end model and show HD images.

Purchased to replace standard TV - looking to go to hi-def flat panel without spending over $1000.
Setup is easy right out of the box - no issues at all. Everything worked perfectly.
Picture quality with hi-def channels is outstanding - it's shocking to see the difference. Quality with standard channels is less impressive, but nothing bad.
It did not come with a usefull manual. Setting up picture-in-picture has not yet been sucessful.
For the money this is a superb display.

I was there today, and the 37" Vizio (which looked great, even next to the 32 inch Toshiba Regza and the Sony 32 inch Bravia) is $799--which includes 90 day no-questions-asked return and an extension by Costco of any warranty (on any TV) to two years.

We've had ours about 6 months now, with no issues what so ever. The picture is brilliant and we really liked all the extra ports to plug in accessories that make it really easy to add components. Good buy!
