Decent case, but keep it out of the sun.......2006-04-28
I originally rated this case as excellent. But, I had to drop it down a couple of stars. After a couple of months of partial sun exposure, the black paint has turned into a copper color where it's been in the sun. I used this case to mount with velcro in my vehicle, so I can take the player in and out, but the case stays stationary. Now, I am thinking of buying another one to use for transporting the player. This case fits well, has a nice, smooth interior lining, and is lightweight. I found one on Ebay for $30 dollars and just thought that was too expensive. $20 dollars is reasonable as long as you don't plan on exposing it to the sun.

I bought a westinhouse LCD TV for over $1600 and the tuner went out after just 2 years!!! You will be greatly dissatisfied with a Westinghouse product, even if bought at a reasonable price. I called the Westinghouse customer service department and they basically said that they weren't going to fix the problem. This is the last time I buy a product from Westinghouse.

My Verizon issued modem, became defective, after over a year. I have bought several DSL modems in order to find, which works best. The Zoom 5654 is head & shoulders above the rest. It does have a burning smell, which I assume will go away as the modem ages.
Good replacement router for the basics........2007-07-22
I bought this DSL modem to replace a provider issued Westell 327 that was damaged during a lightning storm. (The Zoom X5 does not have wireless and the 327 does, but I didn't need it.) For basic use on a Windows based network, the Zoom X5 works great. Setup is easy using the supplied CD. There isn't much software to load; it basically just launches the initial setup and takes you through the steps for configuring the modem to work with your ISP. If you know what you're doing, you probably won't even need to run the disk; just access the modem through the web interface using the default username/password provided in the quick-start guide.
The default security setting (IP Filtering) is "Low" but seems to provide a good balance between usability and protection. However, it's a little tricky to customize, for example, if you want to open specific ports or enable port forwarding. The former requires an understanding of IPFilters and the latter involves configuring the Network Address Translation (NAT) rules. I managed to get my network set up for my needs, but it took some digging on the the Internet for instruction because the documentation provided wasn't specific enough. Zoom apparently uses the same software configuration for all models, because there are references to features that the X5 doesn't have. For example, you can configure special rules for computers in the "DMZ" but the X5 doesn't seem to have a designated DMZ port or any way to assign one. Apart from that, it is a good product at a fair price.
Easy setup and it works.......2007-05-09
I don't know if I'm lucky or others just didn't follow the instructions. I followed the instructions exactly and everything works fine. The auto-configuration was slow but still worked fine. The instructions are all pictures with sub-titles, so it's easy to understand. It's a good bargin for what one gets!
Horrible GUI and Confusing configuration.......2007-03-10
I bought this modem to replace a dead Netopia 3500 supplied by SBC. The auto setup does not work. I had to use the manual setup to get the thing to connect to the internet. Good luck trying to setup port forwarding if you have a server on your network. I gave up and replaced it with a Netgear.
Set it & Forget it.......2006-09-19
I have had this modem for a couple of years now. I wanted something that would be a modem & router w/firewall all in one unit.
After getting it configured, I haven't had to do anyting. My only complaint is that the electronic help provided to navigate the configuration screens is limited. I use static IP's, but most of the help is geared towards what your settings should be if you have a dynamic IP.
