Not Worth The Price.......2007-12-18

My expectations were high for this product. When it arrived, it was packaged very nicely. The box is reusable and very durable. The quality of the sound did not live up to my expectations. I expected more separation in the surround mode, and bass response on par with a Bose Wave Radio. But it wasn't quite up to Bose standards. Hopefully I can get most of my money back on eBay. I'm thinking the Yamaha YSPs are a similar product, but sound much better, they cost more too.

Soundmatters HD Mainstage Delivers Excellent Sound.......2007-11-29

I purchased this as a Surround Sound solution for a small room. I must say I am quite pleased with the sound quality and compactness of the unit. I do think the Surround Sound aspect of this product is a little over hyped. I have not noticed a significant difference in the Stereo mode vs the Surround Sound mode. The room the unit is is small but open with no back wall in close proximity to the unit, this may be contributing to the lack of the surround effect. Overall however it is infinitely superior to my TV speakers. If you want earth shattering Bass you might want to consider an add on sub woofer. I have found the Bass for the base unit to be quit sufficient for my needs. Overall I recommend this product to anyone that is looking for a compact home theatre experience without multiple speakers.

MainstageHD - Better than Bose........2007-07-13

I have had the Mainstage HD since January now, and I love it. I purchased it as a package, with the Substage subwoofer for only 599. I loved it so much that I purchased a second HD that hides behind my couch for a discreet 5.1/6.1 real surround experience. When I purchased the FullstageHD (Mainstage + sub) I was really impressed. I put in Star Wars, action flicks, and even older films, to see how well it could hold up. It did. I must admit the high end isn't always the best, but it certainly isn't awful. I wouldn't have bought another one if it was! Now, with the second Mainstage the sound is INCREDIBLE. My friends and family could not believe the oomf this system had. The subwoofer is responsive as well and ads to the experience. This is the best space saver. And if you have the $$$ to blow, buy a second mainstagehd as a rear channel.

A quality "virtual" compromise........2007-05-02

I'm not disgruntled with this product, but with a Samsung DVD recorder I previously reviewed.

I purchased the Mainstage HD along with the Substage subwoofer from Crutchfields because I wanted an upgrade from the puny sound emmited from my Vizio LCD.

The Mainstage sound is good and loud, but lacks the warmth and richness of a larger speaker. The sound is also not as wide due to the fact the front speakers are only about 12 inches apart. Surround sound is good from side to side and up/down, but I don't hear any rear channel.

On the positive side the subwoofer is full, rich, and easily hidden. There are no speaker wires and arrangement to deal with, and audio CDs sound very good.

If you're looking for real surround sound then I would not recommend this package. Break out the yards of speaker wire and try to convince your significant other that the half-dozen speakers you've strategically positioned throughout the room are actually good feng shui and not a decorating nightmare. On the other hand, if you want an easy to set-up and virtually invisible system with pretty good sound and decent "surround" sound, then this may be for you. An added bonus is Crutchfield's great customer service and tech. support (much better that Samsung). Try it for 30 days, and if you don't like it Crutchfield's will refund and even pay for return shipping (not bad).

No highs, no lows? It's got to be Bose........2007-03-16

I used that pun tag-line for the title of this review because the MainstageHD reminds me of Bose products... Small-sized, but over priced for the sound quality. I guess if you normally get suckered into buying Bose products or other overpriced items advertised in Parade magazine, then this thing seems like a steal. I found the MainstageHD to be only slightly better sounding than a high-end (but much cheaper) boom-box. My TV speakers also put out sound that is nearly as high quality, although admittedly I was surprised by the volume of sound the tiny MainstageHD was capable of. I also found the virtual surround to be unimpressive whether watching a movie or listening to music.
I have since gotten an return authorization for the MainstageHD and purchased a Sony DAV-X1V, which is a few hundred more than the Mainstage, but includes an upconverting 5 disc DVD changer and a real subwoofer. How they call the 4 1/2" driver in the MainstageHD a "subwoofer" is beyond me. By my ears it doesn't put out any clean, audible sound below about 200Hz. I hooked the MainstageHD up to an active subwoofer I already had, and it made a huge difference. But, no subwoofer will overcome the TV-speaker quality sound that the main speakers of the MainstageHD put out.
