Great mapping tool.......2007-03-08

I recently purchased this software to help design hiking routes for use with my Garmin GPS Map60CSx. It took just a few minutes to learn, and I found it easy to create routes and waypoints. The integration with the GPS receiver was seamless, and the pictures are beautiful. You can build elevation profiles, see your route in animated 3D, and National Geographic's MapXchange server allows you to find and download routes from the web for use with this software. You will have to check and perform the software upgrade in order to integrate with the newest mapping receivers, but this was neither challenging nor problematic. Please remember that you cannot copy the maps to your GPS - only the routes and waypoints. And this software is quite expensive for the limited coverage. I also have Garmin's MapSource Topo software, which has all of the US on 3 CDs for about the same price. But there really is no comparison - you get what you pay for. With National Geographic, you will get high quality maps and an excellent user interface. I actually find it easier to use the National Geographic software with my Garmin receiver, rather than Garmin's own product.

Not bad for the price.......2006-12-21

The product works largely as advertised. In this package, you get 5 levels of maps, including scanned versions of the USGS 1:500K, 1:100K, and 1:25K series, covering Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. These maps are of course often somewhat dated (there are thousands of them covering the entire United States and USGS does not have the budget to update them frequently), but the product includes a basic road overlay that can be updated online.

You can either plug in the appropriate CD for the maps you want (there are six in total), or copy the contents of the CDs to your hard drive to avoid swapping disks when scrolling. The only problem with copying files on the CDs to the hard drive is that the program takes quite long to load (between one and two minutes). I can only imagine how long it would take if additional states were also installed on the hard drive.

It was straightforward to transfer track points from my Garmin eTrex Legend Cx to the software, which allows you to accurately depict trails that are not shown on the maps. Editing routes, waypoints, etc is reasonably efficient, but these functions would benefit from a little more attention to user interface.

One of the best features of the program is that the maps print beautifully, including the routes and waypoints transferred to the GPS. Very usable for day trips. For longer trips, it is possible to order larger custom maps. By keeping different routes in different files, it is possible to avoid any confusion about waypoint names.
