Sounds great.......2007-11-28

The only bad thing I have to say about the Q-Bean-UB is that the directions aren't that great. The directions say to PAIR the Bean and the Puck, push the Pair button (well only the Bean has a button that says Pair). Kept pushing the Bean and nothing was working. Finally realized you have to push both the pair button on the Bean and the LTB button (center logo thing) on the puck. Once I figured that out, it works great.

After getting the ST version (see my other review), I ordered the U version which is USB only. I was afraid it might suffer from the noise the ST version has when powered by the USB port on my laptop computer (the manual does not mention that being a powering option for the ST, but it would have been nice) - but the U version has no noticeable noise. The pod is identical to the ST version's pod. The only difference is in the transmitter (also receiver in this case) which only has one thin USB cable coming out of it and no battery compartment, as it doesn't need external power.

This U version connects ONLY to the USB port, and gets its power from it as well - therefore, the sound has to come from the computer. I was very surprised that drivers were not necessary with Windows XP (everything installed automatically without the need for a disk), and that it appears to work just as well as the ST version in range and sound quality (with the ST, you connect a cable to your computer's audio-out, or any other audio equipment). The microphone range also worked well and just about as far as the reception range would go without break-ups - something else I didn't except from the pod.

All in all, a great little unit that does what it claims and does it very well. My only gripe is that it could have had a plug for a microphone (you can only use the built-in one) on the pod - after all, you can use your own headphones - and you have to charge the pod from a USB port in your computer (no AC adapter as in the case of the ST) which is really not a big deal. However, everyone so far on VoIP and video conferencing have said it sounds just fine, even when hanging low around your neck using the enclosed strap (the strap is long, so the pod hangs below your chest).

Maybe a "niche" product, for sure (at least for now) - but one that on balance works better than anything else I have tried till now as far as wireless sound for headphones is concerned. Being able to listen to music, news and podcasts from the computer - and have the occasional Skype sessions while mobile around the house - are very useful features for me.

I have not gotten the claimed battery life (only 3 hours or so of listening) but these batteries might need some "breaking-in" before getting to full power - but I really don't think it would be possible to get 6-8 hours of continuous use from the Pod at realistic sound levels.
