Get a Slingbox but NOT This Model.......2007-07-06
This model, the Slingbox Classic was replaced by the Slingbox Tunercosts less than the Slingbox Classic and, according to Sling Media, is 400% better quality.
If you want to save time figuring out which model to get (there are 3) there's a free guide for buying a new Slingbox. It's totally unbiased.
Using any search engine type "slingbox uncensored".
Watch TV ANYWHERE!.......2007-06-14
This is a magnificent device! I bought this when I got my new job because it takes me around the world, however I can't get my TV shows with me...until now. If you have cable, satellite or just some bunny ears this device will let you watch your TV shows from anywhere you have an internet connection. The install takes no time at all and will recognize most types of hardware. The software goes so far as to automatically program my router to forward the proper ports to the device. The company also has software for your handheld devices so you can even be at work with your phone and watch espn. Every year, one or two great inventions are made, and this is definitely one of them.
AWESOME, but get the TIVO HD-S400 for a better experience..........2007-05-28
I have this slingbox and it is great for all the reasons many posters here have described...however, I wanted to add a little something different to this review to help people REALLY get some more usefulnesss from this device without any added (subscription) fees.
I would HIGHLY recommend going on EBay and buying the TIVO SD-H400 (Toshiba) DVD/Tivo Combo model (it is discontinued, but if you can find it new or cheaper elsewhere, then skip Ebay and get it that way)...Anyway, It costs around $125 to $200 (depending on auction) and the reason for getting THAT specific TIVO is becuase it DOES NOT require any subscription fees to TIVO...it is one of the few "free lifetime" BASIC subscriptions for TIVO (which they do not include on any new hardware). Granted the SD-H400 is not High-def...but considering all the added functionality, it is well worth the price.
This way it allows you to combine internet streaming with recording TV and all your favorite shows and watching them whenever it is convienent in the TIMEZONE that YOU are in....all without any subscription fees.
BASIC TIVO just gives you 3 days of guide data instead of 14 and does not have "seasson passes"...however, if these become inmportant to you, you can always buy the premium subscription for the SD-H400 (even for a second hand one off Ebay...Tivo doesn't care if you are the original owner).
Also the SD-H400 is upgradable to a disk of almost any size (I did 300GBs with no issues at all..inside it is just a regular IDE hard drive)...there are a ton of other "hacks" to make the Tivo Web-enabled...Just google for Tivo Hacks and you will find tons!.
Good luck...Either way, the slingbox is a great investment.
Sling Media Slingbox Classic.......2007-04-22
If you think that all of the claims for this product are hype, then you would be wrong. It does everything it says it will do. I travel on business frequently. I have an HD TiVo with Directv and I get all of their channels and premium packages. When I travel I frequently have a very limited selection on the hotel TV cable system. With the Slingbox I have my vast selection available to me wherever I go including my recorded shows. Likewise, if I forget to set my TiVo to record something, I can access it remotely and set it wherever I am. I was most impressed with the optimal streaming performance. The SlingPlayer client on my PC will adjust to virtually any level of bandwidth I have available to me -- even as low as 100 kbps.

Cheap way to upgrade.......2007-08-17
Beautiful. This convenient little product was the cheapest and easiest upgrade I've ever used. It definitely improved the speed of my peripherals that are rated at 2.0 USB. This little guy significantly improved the performance of the peripherals on my servicable but dinosaur laptop. If you're a "drive it into the ground" computer user like me, crack the wallet and go for it.

Simply load TOPO! onto your PC, and you'll immediately begin to see the benefits of this award-winning software. With TOPO! you can customize any of the hundreds of state maps available with your proposed routes, notes and even photos. You can also create and view elevation profiles that will help you visualize your planned trek. TOPO! makes it a breeze to add map border information to printouts, including UTM or latitude/longitude grids, scale bars, north arrows, and magnetic declination. With Adventure Paper (sold separately) you can print out waterproof trail maps -- along with all your marks and annotations -- that will survive any rainstorm the wilderness can throw at you.
TOPO! is also GPS ready, with no extensions or upgrades required. Transferring waypoints and routes between your GPS and TOPO! couldn't be easier. And with Pocket TOPO! (sold separately), you can take full advantage of your PDA the next time the wilderness calls. Simply download your maps and notes to your device, and off you go. When your trip is complete, you can upload the field notes you took with your PDA back onto your PC, and you'll have created a detailed record of your hike for future reference. No more worries about not being able to read your notes or misplacing your notebooks. Everything you need for your next hike will be saved exactly where it should be--with your map!
The many advanced features that make the National Geographic TOPO! mapping software the ultimate topographic map experience for all your back country adventures include:

Expect a long learning curve.......2006-10-06
I've used TOPO! for eight years and it's the best there is for mapping software. I own software for 10 of the western states and use the program almost daily. I use the program in my laptop and when hooked up to my GPS, I have what amounts to a super detailed car navigation system with a 17" screen. As new maps become available, you can download them free into your computer as needed and it's a very easy procedure. Also, free upgrades are available on-line and that's an easy procedure too.
To make the state series most useable, you need to add Back Roads Explorer, which gives much more detailed up-to-date street and street name information.
The only caveates with this program is that you need a relatively fast computer and lots of memory so you can copy the whole program to your hard drive so you don't have to constantly change cd's. Also, expect to take some time to fully get to know this program.
Mac OS X Mapping.......2006-07-28
This piece of software is what I have been hoping for for since I bought my machine. It is the most elegant and detailed mapping system that I have used. With the Garmin Vista Cx it works flawlessly. You can download any or all of the map data from the disks into the "Topo" file and it runs very well on my powerbook G4. It will upload all waypoints, and routes. It will download all waypoints, routes and tracks! The maps are gorgeous! The interactive web feature is cool but young. It has a geocaching feature. The 3d maps are sweet! It downloads updates and new map layers almost perfectly (had to manually download the software update). I only wish that waypoints symbols would transfer to and from my unit but I can easily live without them. Load the Mapsource maps to your device (Garmin "x" series saves to swappable memory microSD cards) and use Topo! from your laptop.
Useless with Garmin eTrex Vista C.......2006-07-24
I won't repeat the complaints by the other reviewers but I will agree with them. I have a new Garmin eTrex Vista C GPS, which is a good product. But, Garmin wants you to buy their poor quality MapSource software. Poor quality because of the scale. National Geographic TOPO software is somewhat clumsy to use, but it will produce a fine map and does a good job for large scale use, as in hiking, etc. The problem is that Nat. Geo. deliberately misleads in its cover blurb by implying that TOPO will work with "most popular handheld receivers." It won't. So, if you want to produce a topographic map, with a route marked on it, and measure distances, develop elevation profiles, etc., then NatGeo TOPO is useful. If you want to upload waypoints from TOPO to your handheld GPS, be careful!
Non existent customer support - Did not work on Mac.......2006-03-10
Allegedly installs on PC and Mac OSX (10.2). Attempted install on Mac G4 which more than met minimum requirements and could not plan routes, print maps, nor add markers. Tried to uninstall, reinstall to no avail. Website support is pitiful, phone calls and emails not responded to. I am beginning to think it would be easier to drive the 7 hours to Colorado from Wyoming to visit Nat Geo in person. Stay away mac users!
NOT Great software for Mac users!.......2006-03-02
I just installed this software on my G5 Dual 2 Gigahertz machine and am very un-satisfied with the product! It is very slow to respond and if you were planning on imaging the disks to your hard drive for faster response, forget it. This software crashes ALOT and is overall unstable. The navigation is not like previous versions of Topo! either. Does the software work? Yes. Are the maps great? Yes. It is the interface that is poor on this one. National Geographic needs to go back to the drawing board on this one!
