Both products can stream live television and other video content through a home network or across the Internet to remote devices, inside and outside your home. Local clients can connect wirelessly (offered by the Sony LF-B20 only) or via a wired link, depending on the Base Station model you select. When you are away from home, accessing the Base Station is as easy as logging onto the Internet. Adding the LocationFree TV Box, which is a true plug-and-play device, lets you connect to any TV and stream the content served by the LocationFree Base Station in your home to the TV of your choice.
Total Entertainment Mobility
Wherever you go, your home entertainment will follow. With LocationFree, every show, every movie, all your created video, and even live moments can be where you are. Watch live TV, TV programming recorded on a digital video recorder (DVR), stored digital video, digital camcorder content, and more. After logging in on a compatible device, you can watch live TV, change channels, and access and control any additional audio-visual devices hooked up to the system, such as satellite or cable TV tuners or video disc players. Looks Good, Easy to Install
Sleekly designed to fit nicely into your existing home theater outfit, the Base Station features a stylish "piano" finish. The unit can be set vertically or horizontally. Of course, if you choose the LF-B20 Base Station, you can set your system up wirelessly, adding LocationFree to your home entertainment system without cluttering it up.
Connecting the Base Station is simple and it includes automatic set-up for accessing the Base Station when you're away from home. The handy set-up wizard whisks you through the software set-up process, including automatic device registration and automatic set-up for pre-installed security software. The onscreen remote control function makes it easy to navigate your media and services, and the fact that it's equipped with a learning function means that you can replace other remote control devices and control your home theater components through a single, cool-looking graphical user interface.
Great Compatibility
The LocationFree system is designed to deliver entertainment to wide range of devices. As mentioned, you can watch your favorite TV shows, videos, and more on a PSP, a Windows PC, a Mac (running OS X or later), or Windows Mobile devices (coming Fall 2006). And with the LocationFree TV Box, you can communicate with the Base Station and watch your entertainment content without the use of a computer at all.
Advanced Encoding and DVR Pass-through
LocationFree employs advanced networking and video technologies such as the AVC Codec and NetAV streaming for smooth access to video content via the Internet. The use of the AVC (advanced video coding) codec--also called the h.264 codec--means higher picture quality even at lower bit rates, which is how you're able to take the experience of entertainment in your living room to hotels, coffee shops, airports, or anywhere else you have broadband access.
The LocationFree system also supports DVR pass-through. You've programmed your digital video recorder to save your favorite TV shows for you to watch, and LocationFree makes it possible for you to actually watch them, even if you can't get home to do it. While you're traveling or spending long hours at the office, you can use your LocationFree Base Station to access the TV programming being stored by your DVR.

Even though it can be a great product and easy to setup. It does NOT deliver. Works great within the house. Sony tech support can NOT make it work anywhere else. they do not know WHY or HOW to access it over the internet thus LocationLOCKED. Cannot recommend it unless if happy to use around the house ONLY!
Location Free : different from the Slingbox.......2007-09-26
To watch the home TV on a computer outside of the home, Slingbox is better. Changing channels is a lot easier on Slingmedia Player than with Location Free, and the Slingbox connection is a lot more consistent than Location Free.
However, I love using Location Free with my portable PSP at home. It allows me to watch the news in bed, while my wife watches Lifetime on the flat screen. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and the small (bit excellent) screen of the PSP allows me to watch TV without waking up my wife.

Sony has done for "place shifting" what Tivo did for "time shifting" Hook this device up to your Tivo and you have TV anytime AND anywhere! The best of both worlds.Installation was easy. it took less than 10 minutes to get it going. It does require some basic computer and wireless network experience. Shortly after I took it out of the box i was watching TV on my Playstation PSP and on my laptop computer.

Functions exactly as advertised. Fairly easy to setup. Picture quality is perfect on remote PC...a little choppy on PSP, but that is probably a PSP limitation Overall, very, very satified.

Setup was very easy with Sony now providing a DDNS service. Worked with my D-link router on the first try via UPnP. Makes it easy to watch tv along with control it via my laptop or my PocketPC Phone with the "NetFront LocationFree Player" now available. Since I travel for a living, this has made it much easier to stand the hotel rooms and the lack of what I want to watch and provides more quality time at home since I am not catching up with the Directv DVR (seperate one from the main one in the house to not interrupt my partners watching) but have more time to do the other things I love. It works great around the house as well. I am able to take the cooking shows to the kitchen, yard working shows to the yard, etc with my existing wireless access points I already had.
The most disappointing feature is that the player only works on one computer and that a separate player must be purchased for my pocketpc but these does not reduce the terrific picture and ease of use the LocationFree provides.

This item is no longer made. It works with the Tom Tom GO7OO. I purchased it to replace the one that was messed up when someone broke in my car and attempted to steal my Tom Tom and the docking bracket.
Permanent Docking Kit.......2006-07-10
I did not keep this item as I found out that, though blue-tooth enabled, it could not be upgraded for other blue tooth telephones and only could work with only one telephone model. A new kit is to be released shortly and I opted to wait. In addition, it is possibly not compatible with fibreoptic speaker wiring used in Mercedes Benz sound system.

The main reason that I bought this mount is so that the TomTom could talk through the car stereo speakers. Since I have all aftermarket stuff it didn't work so well. The TomTom box adds so much noise to my system that I don't even use it. I just use it for power on/off and headlight auto dim control.
