The iP1700 also delivers print resolution of up to 600 by 600 dpi for black-and-white documents and 4800 by 1200 dpi for color printing. It prints 4 x 6 borderless photos as fast as 55 seconds, black-and-white documents up to 22 pages per minute (ppm), and color documents up to 17 ppm.
ChromaLife100 For Image Permanence
The iP1700 uses Canon's ChromaLife100 system, including FINE print head technology, for eye-popping, high-quality photo printing. When you use select genuine Canon photo papers and inks, prints can resist fading for up to 100 years when stored in an archival quality photo album. The 100-year-lifespan rivals that of many traditional film based photos, long considered by consumers to be the benchmark for image permanence. Prints produced on Canon Photo Paper Pro with ChromaLife100 inks also have an up to 10-year gas fastness when exposed to open air. In addition, ChromaLife100 prints, when created using Canon Photo Paper Pro or Photo Paper Plus Glossy, have up to 30-year light fastness when displayed under glass.
Launched globally by Canon in 1999, the Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) advanced print head technology is one of the keys to the impressive speed and high photo quality of the iP1700. FINE technology uses a ground-breaking high-performance, multi-nozzle print engine that ejects consistent and microscopic ink droplets. You can also take advantage of Canon's software packages to help edit and customize your prints. Easy Photo Print 3.5 software makes it simple to enhance and print amazing digital photos through your computer while Easy Web Print software gives Windows users the tools to properly print Web pages in full color without trimming off the right hand margin. The results are high-resolution photos and documents with sharp detail and clarity in less time.
The iP1700 comes with a one-year limited warranty.

Fast but a hassle.......2007-10-26
I got this printer for free; I wouldn't recommend buying it. It uses up ink like crazy, and the cartridges are more expensive than other canon ink cartridges. While the printer quality is fine, it's a hassle to use. It took me a long time to get the hang of loading the paper (it can't hold much at a time, or the paper jams). Worse, there's no place for the paper to go after it leaves the printer. This means you're stuck catching the paper yourself after it comes out if you don't want your paper scattering all over the place. It's small, which is good for small spaces, but you have to sacrifice perks that better printers have like different settings.
Try a different small printer if you want real quality.
Best yet.......2007-09-08
This little printer is oddly the best printer I've ever had. Mainly because it's still working, it never fails to print. I've been using it steadily for three years and have yet to have a single issue with it. I'm no longer terrified about printing close to a deadline, or feeding the paper by hand, or jams. It just prints. And perfectly.
Excellent value for the price.......2007-07-13
My Epson died after only 1 year. Love this Canon.
Pros: PRICE, PRICE, PRICE, ease of set-up and use, quite good print quality.
Cons: printouts fall onto floor (no tray), print quality a little washed out (compensate by setting intensity higher, then looks excellent).
I had no trouble locating inktanks, and they weren't any more expensive than the ones for my Epson.
Good starter photo printer.......2007-06-10
I've owned a number of higher end consumer and low-end pro inkjet printers over the years. While I was a little skeptical of the quality that could be produced with a 4-color inkjet in times when there are 5 & 6 color printers, I was pleasantly surprised.
Make no mistake, this is an inexpensive printer. It probably won't hold up to lots of use, but it's not intended (or priced) for that use. For the average person, I think it's a great choice for general color printing and photo printing.
It's quick and the color are good. It does surprisingly well on plain paper. Technologically, it's at the cheap end of Canon's new line of printers that use the FINE inks which are designed to give exceptionally long lifespans compared to the currently available inks. It sounds good at least, but I haven't had it long enough to know how it compares to anything else.
One caveat -- there appears to be a bug (or perhaps a feature I don't understand well) in the 1.95c driver that will cause the colors to become very subdued when the borderless printing feature is enabled on plain paper. The setting isn't recommended, but not for that reason. Make sure you turn OFF this setting if you're getting light or washed-out print.
Cheap, Cheerful and Colorful.......2007-06-09
Cheap color inkjet. Advantage over the HP equivalents is that the ink appears to last twice as long. Fairly robust and fair quality for the cost. Hey, if it breaks, just get another. You get what you pay for.

Good features, but buggy.......2002-11-17
* urban elevation data is poor. Don't expect to find the 100ft hill next door on the map, and don't expect to see it on the 3d mode.
* I've played with it for a few hours now and it crashed once (on winXP)
* There's no way to set a default directory for exporting pictures.. and it won't remember where you last exported to. Annoying.
* Fire roads in state parks (Big Basin Redwoods for me) show up BARELY, but are not named. Park trails do not show up.
* A lot of window boxes are "modal".. meaning you can't leave the window open while viewing another window. This means that you can't compare legs of routes side-by-side. You can't compare route profiles. These are unnecessary (AFAIK) limitations in the software and should be considered bugs.
* As you might expect, there are occasional inaccuracies in the map, specifically in the urban areas. The maps tend to be older sometimes, which I guess can cause these problems. Don't buy this as a reliable road map.
* The CA set consists of like 12 cds. You have to insert like 5 of them and go through InstallShield for each one so that TNav knows you have the region (and haven't pirated it). You still have to insert each of the 12 cds whenever you want to view a different region. I haven't seen an option to cache the map data on hard drive instead of inserting the cds.
On the positive side, this program does have really need route/waypoint features. I like being able to freehand draw over a dirt road and then view the elevation profile for the road.. You could do the same for hiking trails (if you know exactly where the trail runs!).. The 3d mode is really neat too, although I think the 3d-glasses are a joke.
I can't compare this to other programs because I haven't used any others.. I'm giving this 3 because the current average of 4.5 stars is too high.

MapTech and my Garmin GPS.......2002-05-20
I bought my Garmin E Trex Vista on the recommendation of the salesman, telling me that I can "hook it up to my computer, and download maps". Even the manual that came with the GPS gave a quick blurb about adding their MapSource software to add "detailed map data" to the very limited map that's built-into the unit. So I investigated both the Topo maps, and Recreational maps at the Garmin website, and both seemed quite a bit more detailed, even though my favorite lake looked only like a rough representation, with only one hill. Then I checked out Map Tech, and the detail was ten-fold! It showed every little slope, and accurately depicted every inch of the shoreline, so I bought it. The only glitch I noticed, was that the cursor on the map is supposed to show elevation, but if you follow one line thats supposedly following a contour, it's plus or minus 15 feet as you scroll, and when I pointed at the lake, then at a thirty foot hill, it showed the same elevation between the two, where the field right next to it accurately showed every foot difference of elevation But when I tried downloading the maps into my Garmin Vista, I found the only thing you can transfer back and forth between the GPS and computer were waypoints, tracks, and routes. So all I could download were little dots on that screen, which shows my lake as a blank field. Garmin Website tells me the only GPS units that accept map upgrades, (Mapsource only), are the GPS12 Map, GPS III+, E-Map, GPS Map 295, and the Street Pilot. I guess all I can do with the MapTech is print the maps to carry to the field, lug my lap-top with me on a hike, or buy a handheld, but someone else wrote that his Compaq works, but not Palm? All I wanted was a small GPS, which I could take on a hike, and have it show me very detailed maps, so I could find the best routes, and I'd never have to worry about getting lost. This one only shows main roads, how to get back to your starting point, and little lines to follow if I pre determine a route at home.
Terrain Navigator with a Compaq Ipac?????.......2001-11-01
Maptech's Terrain Navigator is great on your home computer, but Maptech also has a product called the Pocket Navigator that runs on Compaq Ipacs that you can take out in the field with you too!!! What will they think of next??? Now you can take their same USGS Topo Maps, download them onto your pocket pc, and as your hiking see exactly where you are!(sorry folks, doesn't work with the palm pilot)You can even hook it up to there new GPS unit the Navman!!!!
They have great info about this product on their website (...) you should check it out! I did and I love it!
Good product, Poor customer service.......2001-10-10
I agree, this software is good. Great detail. The 3D feature is over-rated, though, for my uses. More of an image gimmick than actual representation of terrain. More importantly, though, my software suddenly "lost" one much-used quad sheet, leaving white space in it's place on my screen. I also lost all the markers and trails associated with that area, which included several day's work. Called their customer service for assistance and was connected to a very rude, arrogant, and unhelpful technician. Result: no fix. The company needs to back an excellent product with helpful and knowledgable technicians.
