Excellent large format printer at a great price.......2007-12-27
I still can't believe what a great buy this printer was - it was purchased to service a temporary on-location production office but ended up sending back home to our office in New York when we finished with it on-site because it did such an outstanding job. Superb quality! Great buy for design and creative services businesses - would be excellent for home office use also.
Great printer for an even greater price!.......2007-12-25
I love this printer! I have been wanting a wide format printer ever since I started digital scrapbooking. They were always very expensive. This prints beautiful pictures and was very inexpensive compared to other wide format printers. I suggest using PremierArt Matte Scrapbook Photo Paper by Epson for anyone wanting to print 12 x 12 scrapbook pages. It was the only paper I found to be scrapbook quality!
Serious issues -- watch out.......2007-12-13
The printer came with software that printed only a test page. I cleverly traced the problem across the web disucssion boards and downloaded new drivers from the hp site. That allowed me to print an image -- but only in normal mode. A call to HP techs and several tests later(and new cartridges installed -- at my expense) showed the machine had a firmware problem. Needs replacement. They can send me a new one or I can return to the store. I opted for store return. It's time for you to guess -- did I get another of the same printer? Hmmm...you guessed right.
Typical HP Support (absent).......2007-11-12
There is an old saying "When you hit rock bottom, stop digging." HP shpuld take that advice. I have owned several HP printers, and while the hardware is (usually) very good, the software is marginal at best. My biggest complaint used to be that HP would deliver version 1.0 of the software for a particular printer, and update it maybe once, and then never again. So, for instance, Vista comes out and good luck getting any HP drivers for older models except for the top of the line commercial printers like the HP LaserJet 5si/simx. However, this printer is an example of the new low they have achieved. This printer hit the market about the same time as Vista with only their "basic" driver. On their web site they promise to deliver the full driver titled the "HP Photosmart Pro B8300 Full Feature Software and Drivers" package EARLY IN 2007. Well, here we are in LATE 2007 and no driver package. No wonder Amazon wants to sell this thing cheaply! I'll bet HP gave them a really good deal on these puppies. So before you buy this printer look at HP's web site and see if they have the "full featured" i.e. not basic drivers available for your operating system. Also, check the price on replacement ink cartridges. And finally be aware that this model does not have an ethernet port built in. Some of the reviews implied that this model came with an ethernet port, but that is an optional feature that this unit doesn't have it! Good luck.
At first I thought I was going to have to return printer........2007-11-08
HP B8350 Photosmart Pro Photo Printer (Q8492A#ABA)
When I first pulled it out of the box and hooked it up, I thought alright, no more 8.5x11 on a crappy printer. I installed and updated the drivers, got every thing set and hit print...nothing! Thought maybe I had missed a step, went back through every thing and hit print again...NOTHING!!! Now I was seriously pissed. I went through all the trouble shooting in the book, the website and the help guide provided. Nothing worked. Decided to call it a night so I wouldn't do something dumb like throw the printer in the dumpster. Ok, next morning I went through the whole setup routine again...still nothing but a test page. I decided to try the HP phone center. I reached someone who I couldn't understand, and they couldn't understand me...I thought this is going to be a painful experience. After a couple agonizing minutes this person speaking another language (I think) transfered me to someone who spoke english! Cool, someone who at least speaks english...to make a long story short, we spent 90 minutes going through trouble shooting to find out that the disk that came with the printer had a bad setup file. I downloaded the one from the HP site and got to start printing...or so I thought. Yes, I could now print text documents but if I tried to change print preferences I would get nothing but a blinking light. So, I called them back and gave them my ticket number from earlier in the day. The tech looked through the notes, listened to what I had tried and then said, "I just went through this with someone else yesterday" Long story shorter, we changed some .dll files and I can print. I just printed out my first 13x19 print and it is amazing. The colors are dead on and the depth is almost 3D. I'm very happy with this printer and with the help that I got from the 2 techs I talked with to get this working. I would have been happier to be able to print right out of the box, but I'm just glad that I can now print. If you get this printer and have problems printing, make sure that you can get a clean copy of the install software. Also if you have problems with the printing and call tech support, ask them about the .dll files. If someone else had written a review with the problems and how to fix them it would have probably svaed me a few hours on the phone.
I hope this helps someone else who would like this as an intermediate priced large format printer.
