Unbelievably annoying printer driver.......2007-12-07
"There's nothing quite as wonderful as being reminded that you are low (not out, but low) of ink 50,000 a day. Be sure to design the software too, so that the user has to dismiss the dialog before printing can start again. Then pop that dialog up for every page. Someone printing a 100 page document will undoubtedly want to be reminded 100 times that ink is low." This is the direction that the HP managers apparently gave their printer software programmers. I'm surprized I haven't seen this printer featured in a Dilbert comic strip yet.
Want to use a non-HP ink cartridge? Well sometimes the machine just rejects them because they are not genuine HP. Sometimes it accepts them. But even worse....the printer driver is written so that it warns you that you are using non-HP ink cartridges on every single page. Sometimes it even warns you twice on a page that 1) the ink cartridge is non-HP and then 2) tells you it won't be able to determine if the ink is low in another separate dialog. Note that printing stops for every dialog, so if you want to print a 35 page document, you'll have to dismiss 70 dialogs.
The scanning software is weak too, with an unclear user interface that leaves the user wondering "how do I save my scans?" It would be much better to just conform to the menu standard that everyone else on the planet uses (File, View, edit,...)
The slide scanning is, for me, better than the Cannon MP390 since it gives you the option (if you can figure it out) of saving slides that are too dark - of salvaging what you can of a dark image. The Cannon scanner just makes that decision for you and it's always to just omit the slide. So the HP software folks got at least this right.
Bottom line? The hardware is very good, but the people who write printer software at HP should be fired.
Printer lasted 3 months........2007-10-28
Hp does not know how to take care of their customers. This printer was exactly what I wanted, but in no time the feeder to the paper tore up. They sent me a downgraded one to replace it. HP needs to make their products more sturdier! I advise you not to buy, since they quit making this model.
Worst printer and worst company ever.......2007-09-25
This computer stopped working 6 months after the warranty expired...after causing troubles from the very beginning of its life (I was never able to get the fax up and running). I have now wasted over 5 hours with technical and customer support without ANY help. They do not even offer support over the phone for free. I will never by HP again and would advise anyone who is even considering buying this product or another one by HP to do the same.
Dead in under 2 years.......2007-08-09
I enjoyed using this printer for about 18 months when I recieved an error message that read "Ink System Failure." To make a long story short - HP wont replace or repair it. The only option is to "trade up." Why would I ever waste $300 on another printer from HP? I am buying a Cannon.

I have had Cannon printers in the past and been very happy with them in all aspects. Have had this HP for about 6 months and not excited about it. First, I print everything in grayscale (not color) but it uses color ink like it is going out of style. Ink supply is very small and very expensive, even at Costco. I would say it uses twice the ink my Cannon did. Other problems include the printer changing settings for unknown reasons, small paper supply, poor software that doesn't allow you to switch from regular printing to photo without going through all the settings. I'm going to switch back to a Cannon.

The maps were useful and plenty detailed, however not all of them were current or up to date. It served as a starting point, however, I still had to purchase more current versions of the areas I needed from BLM and USGS
Good topo program, compatible with other software.......2006-03-26
Allows you to export tif images with GIS/CAD world files for easy upload into Programs such as Petra. Downside is that if you are looking at a large area, you have to continuously change out disks (there are 5 or 6 of them).

This version is VERY OLD! The maps are from 1985 and do NOT include trail data. Get the Trails Illustrated maps instead, you'll be MUCH better off!

Awesome product.
The ability to see individual topo sheets is very useful, as is the ability to create custom seamed maps.
Dowloads of GPS waypoints to the computer, and the upload of GPS points fron the computer to the GPS unit is easy.
Customer support is phenomenal! They resopond quickly and personally answer your questions and even take recommendations on what might be nice additions for future updates (such as a Baja map set, or the addition of other datums besides NAD27)
