Gorgeous CDs, Great-looking photos.......2007-12-27
I bought this ink jet to print on CDs, and figured it'd also be great to have an ink jet (I have a color laser) for heavier papers and the like. I didn't buy it to print photos, but liked that it has that ability (and have already printed out two photos to test it out--they turned out very nicely).
As other reviewers have mentioned, the included software is a nightmare for printing CDs. It's slow, allows very little customization, and is just generally clumsy. But, I found that I could print to a CD from any of the graphics programs I tried (I tried Corel and Gimp on my Windows XP machine). Simply design the CD label (I just made a 8x8" square and let the printer resize it), then when you click print, click properties and select the CD option.
I used Verbatim silver CDs and they turned out really beautifully. And it was so wonderful not to have to align the paper labels on a batch of 25 CDs!
One thing that is annoying, when you're printing several labels at once, is that you pull up the print menu, and then you have to go over to the printer and press the "OK" button. Since the printer is currently across the room, I did a bunch of walking back and forth :-).
If you're just printing one CD, it doesn't require you to press the OK button.
The other thing that frustrated me was trying to use the manual double-sided printing feature. I was printing on a letterhead paper and the printer jammed several times. Then, after printing out 5 of the first side, I flipped the papers over and put them back in (it has a very easy to follow directions screen that pops up on the computer monitor to walk you through this), clicked Continue, and it proceeded to print out the first page on the back of the first page (so I now had two page ones instead of a page one and a page two).
Since it was just a two page document, I went ahead and printed 5 fresh copies of page 1, flipped them over and then told the printer to print page 2.
I may try the duplex feature again for a longer document, but it's something my laser handles automatically, so it's not a deal breaker for me. It's just something to keep in mind if you are buying the printer in part for that feature.
The real reason to buy this one, to me, is that CD/DVD printing ability. It's super easy (put the CD into the tray and slide the tray into place), and they print out beautifully. It took about a minute per label for me, but that might depend how complicated they are.
The printer works well with both my Win XP desktop and my Mac laptop, so I'm really pleased. And it's going to make labeling CDs easy and professional-looking. It's well worth the price. (Also, I still have more than half my color ink left after printing the photos, about 50 pages of text [with some color], and 24 full color CDs. I have well over half the black ink left, according to the menu.)
Avoid Buying for CD Printing.......2007-12-06
Do not buy for CD/DVD printing. Worst software I have ever encountered. Worst customer support I have ever encountered. Took mine back. Received a full refund.
Inkjet CD printer.......2007-12-03
Very versatile! It does a good job printing on inkjet printable CDs with the right software. This printer also has good speed and resolutions. However, the driver conflicts with the BIOS in some computers, including HP. That is, it slows those computers to a crawl when USB is connected while booting. So far, in my opinion, the fixes provided by HP are not satisfactory.
Piece of crap........2007-11-26
To start, this printer eats ink like a fat kid at the buffet. I saw a cheap HP Photosmart D5160, and considering that my previous Photosmart 7660 lasted me three years, I jumped on it. It was a false economy in terms of both the massive ink consumption and subpar quality. The blacks simply don't look right out of the standard cartridge- kind of a blueish middle gray, even when excluding the color cartridge. This isn't something you'll only see when printing B&W photos- text looks kind of nasty too. Of course, HP would prefer that I purchase the Photo Black cartridge, which I'm sure would help. However, it's ridiculous that I have to buy the Photo Black cartridge to get decent-looking text and graphics.
I'm about ready to punt this printer off the nearest bridge.
dead on arrival.......2007-10-04
The HP D5160 arrived quickly and the shipping carton was intact and the printer was not damaged. However, when connecting it (following the directions) it started to bang the carriage against the side of the printer so forcefully that I thought it would destroy itself. After this the red light comes on and flashes and the PC software says the "carriage is stuck" or something to that effect. An hour on the phone with non-native-English-speakers resulted in HP determining the hardware was bad and they agreed to ship me a replacement free of charge (in exchange for a VISA card number to ensure they get the defective one back).
The software installation was equally painful. It takes about an hour to install and most of the way though it failed and rebooted the PC. After that the PC would no longer boot and I had to boot into Windows XP safe mode. At that point the software informed me that the install was not successful and that I should reboot and re-install the software. I did that and about 1 hour later the install was complete but still acts a bit flaky (messages about missing DLLs or something like that during the initialization process). However, it does appear to work but as I said earlier since the printer is DOA I can't really tell if the software works or not. Obviously this is not your typical printer driver since I have installed Windows Vista in less time than it took this software to install!
I have had HP printers before (and still do) and this is the worst experience I have ever had with a printer. Maybe I just got a bad one but the hardware and software are definitely questionable at this point. At least HP support is good and they answer the phone 24x7 as long as you can understand them and they can understand you then you are ok. Most of the conversation sounded like code, "did you say alpha, bravo, tango, four three?" no, it was "alpha, tango, bravo, charlie, four three"...
Oh, one more thing. Before you can get HP to send you the replacement printer they offer to sell you HP ink for the printer at a "significant discount". When I told them that I would really like to have a working printer before I spent money on replacement ink cartridges I was informed that since they were being nice to me that I really should buy some ink from them and that it was the right thing to do. The implication was that I would get better service if I bought some ink. So I did.

Worked as a starting point.......2007-01-11
The maps were useful and plenty detailed, however not all of them were current or up to date. It served as a starting point, however, I still had to purchase more current versions of the areas I needed from BLM and USGS
Good topo program, compatible with other software.......2006-03-26
Allows you to export tif images with GIS/CAD world files for easy upload into Programs such as Petra. Downside is that if you are looking at a large area, you have to continuously change out disks (there are 5 or 6 of them).
Money Wasted.......2005-05-12
This version is VERY OLD! The maps are from 1985 and do NOT include trail data. Get the Trails Illustrated maps instead, you'll be MUCH better off!
Great product.......2004-03-09
Awesome product.
The ability to see individual topo sheets is very useful, as is the ability to create custom seamed maps.
Dowloads of GPS waypoints to the computer, and the upload of GPS points fron the computer to the GPS unit is easy.
Customer support is phenomenal! They resopond quickly and personally answer your questions and even take recommendations on what might be nice additions for future updates (such as a Baja map set, or the addition of other datums besides NAD27)
I can't say enough about this product! The best mapping software out there
