It's ok... but.......2007-06-26
I wish I could give this printer 5 stars. Where to begin...
1. If you are using this printer with a mac, know that iPhoto and Aperture do not output sizes correctly. This is a real pain as I use Aperture and now I have to export the whole image and open it in Photoshop to print.
2. The ExtraLife coating on Matte paper looks absolutely aweful. I actually called Kodak because I couldn't believe what I was seeing. They told me to try it without ExtraLife: it looked great. The rep then pretty much told me that Glossy paper with ExtraLife would look similar to Matte without ExtraLife. So I ordered the glossy, tried it and was really happy with the results. But if you want true Matte prints with the ExtraLife, don't bother. Makes me wonder why they even offer it. How bad is it? REALLY bad.
3. Having to change paper and ribbon to switch to Glossy was understandable but how does that fit into your workflow? And then the same thing when you want to change to a bigger size... Today we tried to print an image that wouldn't work as an 8x10 - it needs to be 8x12... So I've got to remove an unfiunished media kit and put in the larger 8x14 kit. Pain.
Having said that. I am quite pleased with the quality of the finished print. Colour and resolution are great. It's not as amazing as some higher end Epson ink jets but the prints are very durable, long lasting and come out very quick which in a photo business environment is great. Also, the technology is much more straight forward and reliable than ink jets which - in my experience - clog up and always need cleaning and replacing. You can also get a much better handle of the (cheaper) cost per print with this printer. So... what am I going to do?
Well... here's my repsonse to the 3 main issues I identified above:
1. Wait for Kodak and Apple to update the drivers and print software. I'll harass them periodically and it will probably happen this year.
2. I won't offer Matte prints (crazy I know).
3. I will buy a second printer and keep it stocked with the larger 8x14 media. Yes, you read correctly: I'm buying another one!
Still... 3 stars for now because I think they could have built an overall better product with some minor tweaks.
Kodak has a HOME RUN !.......2007-06-09
I have been a photographer for over thirty years. The 1400 makes prints which rival the quality of a pro lab. I used to spend $25+. and wait a week for quality I now have available at the press of a button. I hope Kodak does well with this printer as I will be a customer for a very long time. Thanks Kodak. The 1400 makes me feel all warm and fuzzy :-) And the price????? Incredible deal!
Plan to get one more.......2007-04-03
This Printer is a Pro photographers dream come true. This is dye sub number four me. It replaces a printer from a company whose beautiful dye sub 8x10 prints are long lasting but the printer was so unreliable that I would spend half a day trying to get print number two. 8x10 and 5x7 prints are very important for my business. The color and finish that comes from the 1400 printer are mind boggling. I print from a G5 dual 2.7. My system is calibrated so I am able to get WYSIWYG on the first print. I keep a dust free computer room, absolutely necessary for clean prints. I use the 1400 regularly. It has been totally trouble free. I wish Kodak would create this machine to make 11x14 prints. I would be the first in line. I downloaded new firmware and drivers this week. Kodak keep up the good work. We need you. As for size the 1400's footprint is smaller than my Epson 2200. I plan to purchase one more 1400. Why? I am busy.
Better than expected.......2007-03-27
I've printed about 20 8x12" glossy photo's on the Kodak Pro 1400 Photo Printer the first two days that I had it. From a couple of neutral tone wedding picture to vivid color landscapes (Keukenhof Tulip Gardens). I would consider myself an advanced amateur photographer and the prints from this printer rival those from the independent photo shops but at 1/5 the cost, and better than your local drugstore.
Dust is an issue, as clearly stated in the manual. The first two prints came out with some dust defects, but resolved itself. I now leave the printer in my office, covered with a bed sheet when not in use. Kodak say's the printer is portable, but at ~30 lb. it's not something your going to want to cary too far from your car. The minor issue is network-ability. I would not get the printer work with a USB print server. After hours of trying on both my Mac and PC I gave up and bought a new Airport Extreme. Connected the this printer and two other printers to a USB hub, the USB hub to the Airport Extreme base station and it's all good!
Pictures are nearly perfect.......2006-12-25
I've had this printer for about a year, having purchased it for $340 including a rebate that Kodak occasionally offers on the product. I use it with a G5 PPC Mac. Over the course of the year, Kodak has upgraded the firmware several times. One of the firmware upgrades left the printer unable to feed paper without manual assistance, but the latest upgrade solved that problem.
Let's get one thing out of the way: there is no comparison between this and inkjet printers, at least not any that are even close to this price point. Low end inkjet printers produce flat-looking photos that often fade with light exposure. Inkjets often jam up with one color or another if you don't print from them quite regularly. I use a laserprinter for my regular output, so my old inkjet was used only for photo output. If I went too long - say a week or two - I had to run several cleaning cycles, then hope for the best. These are not problems with the Kodak. Here, you get beautiful depth that rivals professional Kodak processed prints.
Yes, it's heavy, it's noisy, and it takes up a lot of space. All true. But the photos look like photos, not something your kid printed at school. Yes, the paper is expensive, but again you get what you pay for. The setup is straightforward, hookup via USB works without difficulty, and print time is very fast. It starts printing almost immediately after you hit the print button, so there's very little processing time. In about a minute or so, you have your first page. The accompanying Kodak software works well, and iPhoto will also interface with the 1400 if that is your preference. I'm sure there are many other choices that I haven't explored.
The 4 stars rather than 5 are not about photo quality but rather are the result of the occasional paper misfeed (which Kodak seems to have solved in firmware), the high cost relative to alternatives, and the noise.

Very Pleased.......2007-12-02
Extremely pleased with this GPS. I use it for boating along Florida coast as well as for GeoCaching (www.geocaching.com if you don't know what that is). Li-Ion battery last almost all day when in sunlight when back lighting isn't needed. Consistantly get 10' WAAS accuracy. Topo 3D software and USB connectivity make it easy to manage waypoints, create routes, download geocaches, etc. I added a 2mb SD card to store street detail maps. Like the control buttons, pretty intuitive,, especially like the ability to customize the different screens for different application, for example, I use "Bearing" instead of "time to next" when I am geocaching, though I like "time to next" for traveling. Also the on-board geocaching software seems much easier to use than others that I see my fellow geocachers use.
Had small problem early on with USB cable. I connected the cable that connects to the GPS the way it looks like it was made to connect. Didn't work, quick call to support (yes, India) quickly corrected me and it worked fine.
Color display is a real plus. Have many friends that use other b/w screens and they are hard to read.
I have had mine for almost a year now, and I love it. Strongly suggest getting Li-Ion Battery and SD card and 3D Topo Software.
Unreliable; customer "service" a joke.......2007-04-17
Unreliable pile of 'you-know-what'. Worked fine for about 2 months then refused to power up. Fresh batteries, no go. Called customer "service". Outsourced call center to India; rep followed generic script telling me to: 1) use lithium-ion batteries, and 2) press "power + NAV" simultaneously. As suspected, bogus advice. Fresh batteries metered out to 1.62 volts each / 4.84 volts total. Yes, I tried lithium-ion batteries anyway. Still no-go. Am still waiting for Magellan/Thales to respond. Am still owner of unreliable GPS. Still have about $400 invested in unit plus software and maps. Still kicking myself for buying a Magellan product. Don't do it. Really -- don't do it.
