Of course, the main purpose of the Archos 104 is to play music. Because it has a real hard disk inside of it with six gigabytes of memory, you can store up to 3,000 songs in WMA format at 64kbps, or up to 1,500 songs in higher quality MP3 format at 128kbps. This unit comes able to play not just MP3 and WMA files, but protected WMA files, and even uncompressed WAV files at full CD quality. I initially purchased the Apple iPod Nano, but was not happy with the sound quality, even after trying various EQ settings. I returned that unit and purchased this Archos 104 because I sound checked it in a store and recalled that it had outstanding sound quality, definitely better then the iPod Nano.
The other advantage of the Archos is that it has two modes of interfacing, in one mode, it is tightly integrated with the Windows PC software, much like the Apple iPod must use iTunes - I never used this mode. The other mode is that the Archos can be configured to interface with the computer as if it were a standard flash memory drive. This permits the Archos to be used on any operating system that supports USB flash memory drives, i.e. Windows, MacOS, Linux, etc. This mode also frees the user from having to use a specific application, such as iTunes, to manage the music library, since in the flash drive mode, music is simply copied as any other file copy operation.
Once the music is copied over (in flash drive mode) the software inside the Archos will scan the ID3 tags of the newly added music and update it's internal database, organizing by Album, Artist, Track, Genre, etc. There is also a file browse mode that enables the user to ignore this organization and just navigate the files and directories directly.
The only issue I have with this unit is that the volume is simply too low. At least with the iPod Nano and another mp3 player I tried (TresStore), I was able to drown out the horrible music at my gym; unfortunately, the Archos is unable to deliver the volume needed to do this.
I would recommend this unit for high fidelity listening in an environment with little or no background noise.
Slow Hard Drive Access and Ackward User Interface.......2007-07-21
After having my Archos 104 for about one month, I am pretty happy with my purchase, but there are some small details that occasionally annoy me. I purchased the player because it works with protected WMA files, which I get from Yahoo! Music Unlimited To Go. Loading my music is not a problem at all and I have been very pleased. I've also used the new Windows Media Player 11 (comes with Windows Vista) to sync podcasts that I download. The player also has great battery life. I have a long commute to and from work, and the battery has lasted from when I turn it on at 6:00am to when arrive back home around 7:00pm (with the player being off for 1-2 hours while I'm in meetings, etc.).
Now for the annoying parts. First of all, on shuffle mode, if you want to skip to the next song, there's a long 2-3 second gap, which compared to my girlfriend's iPod, is a long time.
Also, the user interface can be a little counterintuitive at first, and it's way more complicated than it should be to switch from shuffle to a playlist.

Get One While You Can, Even a Refurbished One.......2007-12-12
In this review I'm comparing the G4000 to its sleeker, more attractive cousin the Eton E10, the Kaito 1103, the Kaito 1102 and the big Grundig S350 DL. I'm even throwing in my Tivoli PAL and Tivoli Songbook. The winner? Much to my disbelief (I've been a big fan of my Kaito 1103 for over a year with its strong FM reception)the winner is the G4000. As I turned the stations here in Los Angeles, I didn't have to budge the antenna and I got perfect reception--for even the difficult stations like 88.9. Both AM and FM were stronger than the Eton E10 and the Kaito 1102. The G4000 beat the Kaito 1103 for AM and at least tied for FM, maybe even better because like I said, the G4000's FM strength is so impressive I don't even have to adjust the antenna for what are usually hard-to-get stations. I can't even say this about my big reliable Grundig S350 DL. Plus the speaker on my G4000 is far better than its small digital PLL sythnesized cousins, the Kaito 1102 and 1103 and the Eton E10. The only radios I have that have a nicer sounding speaker are my Tivoli PAL (my best)and my Tivoli Songbook but those radios have, relatively speaking, inferior reception. Plus they're fifty to sixty dollars more. On balance the Grundig G4000 is my best radio and I would argue the best radio for the money. Yeah, the Eton E10 is more attractive and has a better interface but its speaker isn't as loud and it costs 30 dollars more. If you can pick up a G4000 for a hundred dollars, as I did on Amazon with free shipping, you're getting a great deal.
Update: Gladly, I took my G4000 out of my office where the computer was creating a little interference, especially on AM. I love the G4000 so much I'm now using it in my bedroom as a "clock radio." In my office, I put what used to be my clock radio, my Sangean WR-2, a bigger table radio which doesn't get interference.
Second update on 7-15-06: Side by side comparison of the G4000 with the Eton E10 shows that the G4000 blows the E10 away in AM. The E10 gets AM overload on 1150 AM and sounds cold and distant whereas the G4000 locks in on 1150 perfectly and sounds warm and full. The G4000 even gets better AM separation than my Grundig/Eton S350. Get the G4000.
