I purchased the Microtek i900 flatbed scanner a couple months ago. I use a scanner for a lot of things for which any cheap scanner would suffice, but was looking for a scanner with a higher density rating for scanning my artwork, which frequently has lots of subtle darks. I've had scanners in the past - cheap ones too - that would give me excellent color quality and detail in my artwork scans, but the universal problem was getting the darks to read dark enough in the scan. So basically I bought this Microtek for the 4.2 optical density (D-max). Well, it does capture a very dark dark. Unfortunately it seems to lump about 5% of the darkest darks into the same value (black, basically.) Also, the dark greens come through a little too blue-ish, and too dark as well.
I have heard from other artists and fine art printers that this is a universal difficulty (especially with the greens), so I'm not specifically disappointed in Microtek, just frustrated with my search for the perfect scanner.
On a general note, the scanning software is also more complicated compared to less expensive scanners, and the scanner seems to need frequent calibration (although it says this is normal.) I'm still supposing that I'll eventually get used to the software, and hoping that I'll learn how to "fine tune" the controls to get exactly the results I need.
I haven't seen how it does with slides or negatives, as I scan exclusively reflective material.
Best Scanner I've ever purchased.......2007-10-17
Do not expect this to be an easy scanner to use as it's prosumer equipment, but for a serious photographer it is wonderful. It's easy to calibrate, easy to use, and gives very nice scans at 3200 dpi for my 35mm and 4x5 negatives and slides. It is HUGE so expect it to take up half of your desktop (it's twice the footprint of my laser printer). Also you should use the firewire as it is much faster on a large scan. I'm using it mostly to scan in my father's 10,000+ 35mm slides that are up to 60 years old. It scans 12 at a time, dumps them into sequentially numbered files, does auto-color and other correction and makes the job actually sort of fun! I'd highly recommend it.
Non-existent customer service... avoid Microtek.......2007-08-09
I almost bought the i900, but wound up buying the i800 instead. You can read my full review under the i800 page, but basically I've had a pretty terrible experience with this company. My scanner suddenly broke after a couple of months, and the only way to contact their tech support is to wait until they email you back which seems like it takes anywhere from three days to two weeks. My replacement scanner had very dirty glass on the inside surface.
It seems like many people are having these same problems. Do yourself a favor and buy another brand.
Good Quality but a bit slow.......2007-06-27
After dealing with one dud they sent out to me, I got one that works and am quite pleased. I'm using this mainly for the slide scanning capability. The only issue I've had so far is with the software. They send you two programs you can use; Microscan and Silverfast. Microscan is generally the quicker program but Silverfast has superier options including an impressive dust and scratch removal option.
Apart from a few heavy clicks, it's a very quiet machine.
Be careful, There is no repair service available........2007-05-24
I purchased my Microtek i900 in August 2005. This week it decided not to turn on. I may have used to copy 250 pages or negatives in this period of time. I contacted the service department for Microtek who send you to an online repair service that will give you an email response in 48 hours. Turns out that the unit that I paid over $500 for is out of warranty and there is NO repair service for Microtek in the United States! The only thing I can do with the unit is junk it. Amazing waste of good money to make 250 copies. They do offer you a telephone number to call to get a "discount" on another i900 or upgrade to another Microtek unit. Why would I bother with no repair service available. I understand that when your unit breaks, they will give you a refurbished replacement. No Thanks!!! Never Again....

Garbage.......2007-11-29
This phone is garbage. If I had to do it all over again, I would put more money in to buy a panasonic phone. The phone has lot of static and people I talk to complain that they can't hear me well. I also have an ATT phone on the same line, and that one works great!

Purchased 2 GE cordless hansets 5.8 GHz 28001EE1
Only one of the units work, The other did not. After contacting Amazon and then the seller and then GE I ended up having to pay shipping and insurance I sent it to "Thompson Product Exchange" as directed and hope for a replacement at some future date, perhaps 4 to six weeks if ever.
Will make any future purchases at local retail establishments.
