      Magellan GPS 315

      Amazon.com Review

Magellan's GPS 315 doesn't have a lot of advanced features, but it does provide positional and directional readings accurate enough to help you find your way back to base camp when you're out in the woods. This portable global positioning system is one of the most compact we've ever tested, and it features a crisp display for the pages of information it throws at users.

The GPS 315 is designed more for outdoor use than car navigation and doesn't display road maps. It does have a database of over 15,000 cities and the capability to accept up to 500 user-defined waypoints, so it still works fairly well for giving you bearings to the next town or point of interest. We used the tracking features extensively, which let us leave a "bread crumb" trail as we traveled. This was especially helpful when we were backtracking along the same route, as we were able to easily compare our current position with the trail on the display.

The display has two levels of backlighting, a feature that drains the unit's two AA batteries at a frightening rate. However, without the backlight on, we got more than 12 hours of use from the unit.

The GPS 315 uses simple controls that let users page through its numerous data screens. As long as we were moving the compass, the screens worked well; we especially liked the graphical compass that pointed out our current direction of travel and the bearing to a waypoint at the same time. The device can also serve as a full-fledged trip computer, measuring distance, average speed, and providing an estimated time of arrival. Perhaps the best thing about the GPS 315 is that all the data screens are fully customizable, letting users create their own data pages containing only the data they want to see.

Although Magellan doesn't include a lot of goodies in the box, the GPS 315 has many optional accessories that increase its capabilities. For example, you can get a PC cable to upload topographical and street map data. Without all the extras the GPS 315 is better suited for hikers and boaters than highway travelers, but it's an accurate and inexpensive way to keep your bearings. --T. Byrl Baker

1 out of 5 stars Does not hold up.......2004-04-13

After about six months of use it started using batteries even though it was turned off. A few months later it quit working completely. I sent it in to be repaired under warranty. They sent me a new one along with a power cable. It worked fine for about four months (it only had a 90 day warranty), before it did the same thing. I turn it on now and the whole screen goes black. It worked very well and I liked the GPS and functioanlity, when it worked. I am now stuck with a non-working GPS and the accessories that I won't be able to use with the Garmin I plan on buying. Everyone I have talked to told me I should have bought a Garmin as they are the best.

3 out of 5 stars not bad, but maps are better.......2004-01-06

Liked the reception of this vs. the Garmin unit I had previously. But soon learned that maps are the way to go. I upgraded to a Map330 soon after trying the 315.

      5 out of 5 stars Great device.......2003-05-16

This is my first GPS unit and I could not be more pleased. It is simple to use and easy to carry. I have used it to mark Civil War battle sites and to find bench marks. It takes me right to the bench marks. If you are looking for a good unit, the 315 is the one you are looking for.

      4 out of 5 stars I like it a lot!.......2003-01-03

This is excellent! I can use this thing and get right on op of a coord. I use it geocaching and it fairs well in all situations except in steel buildings and brick walls. I have dropped it, sat on it and soaked it in water and snow and I have not had one problem with it.

3 out of 5 stars needs better waterproofing.......2002-11-18

This unit is pretty good for the price. It basically works well in most cases and has all the basic features. That said, it has weak points: it can take a while to lock and needs an open area out of the woods to pick up the satellites, the user interface is a little clunky and processing a little slow, batteries are used up quickly, and most importantly it seems too sensitive to moisture. Mine died when it was in a coat pocket and we got caught in a rainstorm. We expected it to be basically waterproof, but it condensation got in somehow and it died. Water could be a problem if you're relying on this in a critical situation.

This video should have come with the unit, because it does'nttell anything about the way to operate the unit. Half of the time theyare trying to sell you the cd and the cord to connect it to your pc.Seems to me that an instruction video... should do a better job ofinstructing.

Remanufactured Grundig FR200 Emergency Radio with AC Adapter (Gold)

        Amazon.com Review

The remanufactured Eton Grundig FR200 emergency radio is the entry-level shortwave radio in Eton's line of emergency radios. With a dependable hand-crank power generator that powers the unit's AM/FM/shortwave tuner and a built-in LED flashlight, the lightweight and portable Grundig FR200 is an economical choice for anyone in the market for a radio that can be relied on in emergencies or in environments with limited power sources.

Other models in Eton's line of emergency radios that we tested include the Grundig FR250, a shortwave radio that also includes a flashing LED light, cell phone charger and siren; the Grundig FR300, which includes the emergency features of the FR250, but offers television and weather station tuning instead of shortwave; the Grundig FR350, a water-resistant variation of the FR250; and the Grundig FR400, a water-resistant variation of the FR300.

        Power When You Need It
At the heart of all of Eton's emergency radios--including the Grundig FR200--is an internal generator that recharges the internal NiMH battery pack and powers the radio and flashlight. According to the product manual, to achieve 40 to 60 minutes of uninterrupted power you must turn the crank at a rate of two revolutions per second for 90 seconds. In our test, after our initial 90 seconds of rigorous cranking, the FR200 powered right up and was still going strong with radio reception after an hour. At the hour mark, we briefly turned the flashlight on, and that too was at full force, with no perceivable drain on radio reception.

The FR200 can also be powered via an AC adapter (included) or three AA batteries (not included). The dynamo crank tucks itself nicely into the side of the radio and offers little resistance as you turn the handle. (Don't let the cranking requirements frighten you! A full 90 seconds of turning the crank can be tiring and may not be for everyone. With that in mind, we also recharged the radio with less than a minute of cranking and achieved over 40 minutes of continuous power.)

        Design and Controls
At slightly more than a pound in weight, and with dimensions of 6.5 by 5.75 by 2.25 inches (W x H x D), the FR200 is designed to be tucked neatly into its handy nylon carrying case and can be easily stored in an emergency box, or packed neatly for a camping trip. An LED flashlight is set on the front of the radio, just to the side of the analog tuner. The flashlight is designed to help you down an unlit stairwell or enclosed hallway in a pinch, but the light is not directed or strong enough to help you much in a pitch-black forest or other open area. The radio and light can be operated simultaneously, though of course at the expense of power.

The FR200 includes a handy strap on the top of the radio for easy carrying, and the tuning and volume knobs are set to the side. The mechanical controls are extremely visible and easy to use. The volume control is a bit difficult to finesse, but the tuning knob--which features a smaller concentric fine-tuning control knob on the inside--is much easier. An earphone jack is set into the back, and the telescoping antenna tucks neatly behind the handle strap. The radio's 2.5-inch speaker is set directly in front and offers reasonable audio quality for the radio's purpose. The tuner itself is not illuminated in any way, which makes sense for reasons of power conservation, but in a darkened environment, it's literally impossible to see. For an "emergency radio," it seems that Eton might have addressed this problem with a self-illuminated background or lettering, as they did with the FR250, FR300, FR350, and FR400 models.

        Tuning and Bands
The FR200 offers 14-band tuning--AM, FM, and 12 shortwave bands. Our AM reception was outstanding; we were quickly able to tune into every station for which we searched. Reception for FM was also very good, though there was some extra fine-tuning on some of the stations. Our shortwave reception, however, was a mixed bag. We tested in the early and late evening, searching for signals in the more heavily populated SW1. While we found several signals during our test, honing in on them took a bit of finesse with the fine-tuning knob. And when we did find them, there was static and background noise with most of the signals.

It became clear during our testing that the FR200 is primarily an emergency radio, with several outstanding features that include shortwave reception; its shortwave functionality, however, is not its primary selling point. But for an entry-level, economical emergency radio to use in a pinch or during an outing where access to electricity is an issue, the Grundig FR200 more than suits the bill.

2 out of 5 stars Antenna broke after a week.......2007-09-06

Cheap. It broke the second time I used it. Then it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to open it to replace the antenna. I guess it's OK for a cheapie...that's why I gave it two stars instead of one. The shortwave function works pretty well.

1 out of 5 stars A radio you never buy!.......2006-06-21

I bought this one in Jan.,2006, and I use it often to receive FM music, it works, but I have to use AA alkaline battery to run it, cranking can work 1 hour less, then died. So, I bought a KA009, which is 100% better than this junk, I gave this radio away. Actually, I should throw it to junk box, but I did not, I gave it away..

1 out of 5 stars Grundig Emergency Radio.......2005-12-07

This is a very flimsy looking item. I would expect something as vital as an emergency radio to be a bit more rugged. I doubt it would survive a 2 foot drop. It's thin plastic construction inspired no confidence and I returned it right after opening the box
