2nd Philips CD player to die an untimely death.......2007-10-20
My first Philips boombox (AZ2045) had amazing sound. That one died when the CD player stopped recognizing disks. I figured it was a fluke. I was mistaken. This AZ1837 died in a similar fashion but never had the same sound quality. It was, however, significantly more compact and easy to use.

I purchased this item as a refurb and I'm so glad I didn't pay full price.
The reason I selected this unit is because it plays MP3's and WMA's, but I mostly liked the shuffle feature.
Unfortunetly, nothing seems to work properly with this unit.
1. Sound cuts out on Audio CD's
2. The shuffle mode is a waste as it cuts the end of the songs off and sometimes half of the song.
3. The volumn is good with Audo CD's, but not so good with MP3's.
I called Philips today and they told me to return it for a new unit. I had to pay the shipping ($12.00) and will not be reimbursed for it.
Although they said they'd send me a new unit, I'm sure it will be another refurb, which is OK if it works. Something tells me, based on the previous review that these problems are a manufacturer defect and not the fact that I purchased a refurbed unit.
I will update you when I recieve my new unit. Sure hope it isn't worse.

I really liked a lot of its features as it WILL recognize folders and allow you to skip between albums very easily. But what the crap, try doing a random on it and it automatically cuts off 5 seconds of every mp3 as it jumps to the next song.
How could they be that stupid when they put the thing together?

The unit is smaller than I thought after looking at the picture, but the sound quality is quite good. I have not yet tried the MP3 capability or the ripping. The remote is very nice to have for the baby's room.
The unit gets stays warm as long as it's plugged in, and even after it "auto shuts-off" when the disc finishes.
As the other reviewer does, I miss a sleep timer, since we are using this for a baby's room. Also, why no volume control on the remote. Silly.
Product Misrepresentation.......2007-04-11
I have returned the product as it did not perform as advertized. Capital Electronics was very difficult to work with on the return and would only allow 85% credit on the item when returned. Amazon has agreed to give full credit on the item. As of this review I have not received a credit card bill since the return to verify I received full credit.

Low Battery Life, Bad Ringback, Slow Machine.......2007-03-20
The battery life for this phone is only 45 minutes after being fully charged for 18 hours. I went through the life of all of batteries of all of the phones in 2 hours, after charging all of them for 18 hours as instructed in the manual.
The phone rings you back once after you hang up, almost every time. This is especially annoying late at night when it can awaken the entire household.
Listening to messages is EXTREMELY slow and so is setting up the machine, as everything is voice-guided by a super-slow computerized voice.
I'm returning this phone tomorrow.
Peaceful Coexistance with 802.11n.......2007-02-16
I see no dropped packets on my 802.11n wireless network. My previous spread spectrum cordless phones totally disrupted the wireless link. I'm using AirLink 802.11n router with notebooks containing Dell 1500 wireless mini-pci adapters. FWIW, I get a solid 130mbs connection but actual throughput is a mere 3mbs.
Voice quality is fine although I would not rate it as excellent.
When a message is queued, the main handset beeps whereas other brands have a flashing indicator on the handsets. I somewhat prefer the flashing handsets feature.
Tip: You can delete all messages by pressing delete for a few seconds.
In conclusion, these phones are a very good value and WiFi friendly.
One Star too Many!.......2007-02-06
A complete waste of my money. I bought these phones at a Warehouse store because they were a great deal. Then I convinced my neighbor to do the same. We're both extremely frustrated with this phone system due to Ringback. Thirty to sixty seconds after EVERY call is completed the phone will ring... once. Most times, it leaves your phone line off hook, so the next caller gets a busy signal. So, we never get messages to the machine. My neighbor has the exact same problem. The constant ringback is worse than the days of telemarketers.
I took the time to work with VTech Customer Support. Their only resolution was for me to unplug every wire, cord and battery for five minutes to reset the phones. This works for the first call in or out. After the second call, the same issue re-appears. End result. VTech wont replace the phones. I'm down $140, and need to reset the clock and re-record my outgoing message. I don't think so, VTech!
Is it an issue with Verizon? No. When I plug in my old Uniden phone instead of the VTech, no issues appeared during two days and 18-20 calls. When I use my 25 year old (traditional) phone, no issues. But when I reinstalled the VTech the problem was back immediately.

I am pleasantly surprised at how much better this is than the panasonic. I have had many phones before. It seems like vtech and uniden are more reliable and easier to use than the fancy panasonics which never quite live up to the expectations. They change models so fast that anything you say about a model will be obselete by the time it goes to press. I'm sticking with the brands that work, like this one.
Great phone but needs improved answering machine options.......2006-10-19
To the reviewer who doesn't like the beep indicating new messages, this can be disabled if desired in the options menu. I agree that the worst thing about this phone system is the answering machine, especially the fact that it does not have a delete option at the end of the message; if you wait even a split second too long to delete it, it deletes the next message and there is no way to get it back! Very frustrating....I have never had an answering machine before that did this. Otherwise, it's a great set for the price and the sound is excellent!

I bought this strobe/phone for a hard of hearing person. the strobe works ok, but you would have to be looking in the general direction to see it, its more of an orange color light that isn't very bright... at night it can be recognized more easily.. The nice thing about this system is how easy it is to install, basically between the wall and the phone (an in line and an out line) the other nice feature is that it also has an additional amplified ringer in addition to the strobe.. its so loud that Im convinced even the deaf can hear it. The strobe kind of sounds like a smoke alarm so you might get a few calls from your neighbors if you live in a shared-wall situation. Overall I think its a good deal for the price.

The looks of the unit suggest that it has a large easily visible light. Actually, it is a puny small lamp which is just visible in the large 'window'. However, the buzzer is loud and adequate. It is still a reasonable value, considering that a similar looking device from other sources found on the web cost twice as much or more.
