Smartly-designed -- Under-engineered.......2007-10-20

The Opticlock II has some attractive design features, but the clock is not built to the standard set by the designers. In short, it is under-engineered. 1]The Opticlock II is VERY light; it is easy to brush off a nighstand. All plastic with one AA battery. 2] The magnification features provides only a minimal gain in the size of the elements [numbers, marks] on the clock's face. There is potential here for real assistance to those with limited vision, but that potential is not realized in practice. 3] The incremenntal alarm [starts soft, gets louder) works, but if moves from quiet to loud so quickly that the sleeper cannot respond easily before it is at its loudest.] 4] The light, activated by touching a button on the top of the clock, simply shines a very narrow beam across the face of the clock. The light in not sufficient to make the face readable at night. My summary: full of good and potentially useful features poorly implemented, probably to keep the cost down. Handsome in its own way, but not fully functional.
