I intended to purchase a USB flash drive but for about the same price I also got an mp3 player, FM tuner, and audio recorder. I was hesitant to purchase this unit after reading about poor FM reception and five minute initialization times, but I took a chance and haven't experienced those problems. I liked the unit so much that I immediately bought another for use at work. I listen to a dozen relatively huge 55MB mp3 files that I converted from half-hour ocean/relaxation tapes. These files are so large because I converted them using the highest quality variable bit rate up to 320KHz which this unit supports. It takes 28 seconds to load one 55MB file through the USB port. It takes 3 and 7 seconds respectively for the 'Philips' and 'GoGear' splash screens, and then 11 seconds to begin playing the last file that had been playing at shut-down. It takes 9 seconds to start playing a new file after it has been selected. I don't know the response times for music mp3 files which are much smaller. I'm amazed at the sound quality and available volume from such a small unit when using good headphones. I use Sennheiser PX-100 headphones instead of the supplied earbuds. I live near a large metropolitan area, and I could have used more than ten station presets. Every preset station is clear and solid without any fading, and switching between stations is instantaneous.

It delivers what it promises. It's simple and user friendly. The fact that you don't need to keep up with a cable is very convenient. It plugs right into your USB port. The sound quality is very decent. I've used it to play wma, mp3, and radio stations. I also acts as a voice recorder and creates wav files.

It takes about 40 seconds to start up, that's pretty slow. The 2 gigabyte version actually has 1.88 gigs of space.

If you can't see spending hundreds on an iPod, this might be for you.

Great MP3 Player and Flash Drive!.......2007-07-10

I bought this item about two months ago, and it is great. Originally I bought it for an MP3 player, but I actually enjoy it for it's use as a flash drive more. Fast transfer to and from the device via USB 2.0, and it also works with USB 1.0! Can hold anywhere from 200-800 songs depending on the size. It's actual size is 1.88GB, as it uses .12GB to store its run information. One negative thing is that when you put music on it, depending on how much you have on it, it can take a while to start up, seeing as it is a flash drive, not an actual hard drive like other mp3 players have. I have to wait about 5 minutes plus for it to start up and be ready to use. Also, if you have the lock turned on, after you've waited 5 minutes for it to load it will turn off, being that you have it on lock. This means another 5 minutes, and the lock doesn't take to much pressure to get pushed on in your pocket. I would still reccommend this as a jump drive though, as it works great for that, and if you choose you can use it as an MP3 player, FM Radio, and Voice Recorder, where normal flash drives can't do that. The Voice Recorder is very good quality, and a neat feature to have. The FM radio isn't that good at all. It picks up few stations, the antenna being built into the headphones they provide for you, but it might be better in a place highly populated with more radio stations to pick up. My final ruling is:

The Tivoli Model One has been praised far and wide for its high-quality sound, small size, and cool, retro styling. We got our hands on a sample unit and came away impressed, just as many others have. Anyone who wants a compact, stylish radio with surprisingly good sound should give the Model One a look.

Design
In many ways, the Model One is the culminating achievement of famed audio engineer Henry Kloss's long career. Designed from the ground up by Kloss, who passed away in 2002, the radio exudes understated class and elegant simplicity. We received the Platinum Series Model One, which features a hand-lacquered, high gloss dark walnut cabinet that is simply gorgeous. According to Tivoli, the genuine wood casing isn't just for looks as it provides "an acoustically inert housing" that maximizes the speaker's sound quality. At just over 8 inches wide, 4.5 inches high, and 5.25 inches deep, the Model One is about the size of a toaster turned on its side-- plenty small to fit on a desk, dresser, or nightstand.

The Model One's single rotary dial handles tuning for both AM and FM stations. It feels sturdy and smooth in the hand. The dial is designed to move between stations at a speed that is a bit slower than the speed at which the user turns the knob-- a 5 to 1 ratio, to be exact. This "ratio" dialing technique makes it far easier to tune stations accurately and quickly. It's a nice touch that sets the unit apart from other desktop radios.

The tuner band selection and volume dials are easy to control. Plus, they're well designed for hands of all sizes. A small LED power indicator, as well as an LED that helps determine signal strength, are positioned between the dials. We liked the light-colored face and dark lettering printed on the Platinum Series model we reviewed; it made for easy operation in dimly-lit rooms. The Model One's single, 3" driver is protected by a handsome metal speaker cover. Tivoli adds that the speaker is enhanced by a "multi-stage frequency contouring circuit that adjusts the speaker's output over half-octave increments." The result, Tivoli claims, is "musically accurate tonal balance and bass response."

The back of the unit features a coaxial antenna jack for the included FM antenna wire. While the Model One also has an internal FM antenna, Tivoli recommends using the supplied external one for tricky tuning in locales with a lot of stations crammed together. There's a handy switch for switching between the internal and external antennae. A standard 3.5mm headphone jack is also provided, as is a 3.5mm auxiliary line in port for plugging in your iPod or other music device. If you want to use the Model One as a component tuner-- not a bad idea given the overall quality and accuracy of the tuning circuitry-- Tivoli has provided a 3.5mm output port. The back panel also sports separate ports for AC and DC power, making the unit a great choice for boating or RV use.

Listening Pleasure
As with the Tivoli iPal portable speaker system, we were initially skeptical about the performance of a small, one-speaker unit that only offers monaural sound. The reality is that most small two-speaker systems don't allow you to place the speakers very far apart anyway, and the Model One's rich, resonant sound more than made up for its lack of true stereo separation. Plus, the Model One is a single, elegant box with no annoying speaker cords.

While the Model One isn't designed to provide earth-shattering sound at high volume, it produces surprising clarity and fullness at normal listening levels. When turned all the way up, the unit's rich sound persists and we suspect that Tivoli engineered the Model One's volume level to max out before any distortion arises. If you don't need a lot of volume, the Model One delivers. As with the iPal, we were left scratching our heads and wondering how such great sound could come from such a little box.

The Model One's tuning accuracy is also impressive; we were able to dial in stations we didn't even know existed. Tivoli says this is due to the unit's discrete-component FM tuner technology, which was originally developed for cellular telephones. Whatever Tivoli has done here, they did it right; closely-spaced stations are a breeze to tune.

Great, but a couple of glitches.......2007-07-07

This is a fantastic radio -- I've owned several over the years, but their are a couple of glitches.

On the good side:
* Beats the Bose mini system any day and costs a few hundred less!
* Precise tuning with rotary dial
* Great sound w/o being phony
* Furniture grade wood
* Acceptable price
* Enough heft to use as a weapon should a burglar come in your house

On the bad side:
* Furniture grade wood destroyed by plastic buttons that look and feel cheap
* No presets or equalizer
* Attaching auxiliary device takes practice
* Annoying "pop" when turned on. Always worries me that something is wrong
* Discernible low level hum on very low volumes
* Much like Apple computers, there is not much of price differential among authorized retailers. Buy from a non-authorized dealer (such as some EBayers) and you may find the warranty void
* No remote

Still a great radio for those who don't want some unholy stereo system with a million cords to get in the way. If you have the opportunity, compare the Bose and Tivoli/Kloss systems side by side. Bose may be stereo, but you probably won't be able to tell the difference!

I bought this for my parents who live in rural VT, and they are very happy with its sturdy simplicity, ease of operation, and quality of reproduction. If you are looking for a elegant, simple table radio, this is an excellent choice!

Excellent but a bit strident sometimes.......2005-05-16

A very beautiful piece of furniture. Sturdy and well finished. Solid bass (but not deep). Excellent sound but sometimes a bit strident (harsh) specially when used as AUX. to reproduce mp3 (inherently strident). The dial numbers are unreadable under almost any regular condition. Mine came with the dial (tuning wheel) shifted, so I can't have correct readings (99,9 looks like 100.2). However my other Tivoli radios (PAL and other Model 1) are absolutely centered. Don't know how to fix it.

The model ONE sounds a lot better than PALs and the same quality as model TWO (but mono). However my first model TWO showed bass distortion for certain music mixes when the companion RIGHT speaker was connected. My actual model TWO is a bit (but a very bit ) lees strident.

Bottom line I love my TIVOLIS but would suggest:

- Digital (Like Tivoli's SongBook )
- Better Dial Numbers System
- Independent two speed FM AM knobs (if not digital)
- Bass/Treble (separate) controls.

p.s. Try Model One with a Select-A-Tenna ... is a DX BOMB.

This radio is extremely nice. It even goes great with our maple kitchen cabinets and green walls, a perfect match. The sound is very good but reception is so so with the wire annt. It is very well made.

Not what I expected.......2006-09-25

With today's technology, this company appears to be behind the times. This is clearly not what I expected, LED screen was not displaying some of the numbers when dialing and the volume, even to the highest possible limit, was not adequate. I have a Panasonic cordless with an ansering machine that I was trying to replace. I will be keeping the old one because even with the abuse it's suffered over the last three years, it's still in better shape than this one.

I got this phone with a good price from Staples, did not have any of the problems mentioned in the above reivew.

Been using it for over a week. In fact the phone is off the charger the whole day and it's kept on the base during the night.

Unhappy Buyer.......2005-12-31

I purchased this cordless phone on 11/27/2005 online. When it arrived I read the insturction manual, then let the battery charge for the 10 hours it recommended. When it was fully charged I tried to use the phone, handset would not communicate with the base unit.

Returned for exchange, new phone worked well on out going calls, but incomming call's could not communicate with handset.

The sound quality was less than great, awnsering system was of very poor sound quality, all in all just a poor quality system. Returned and exchanged for a Panasonic KX-TG2431W
