Don't buy them if you live in mountainous area!.......2007-12-31
We live in mountainous areas of the North East. We are lucky if they work 2 miles. We starting picking up other people's conversations on the first day, and they heard us too. Not good for children to use (which is why I bought it) I thought I could have used this with my son who is seven to talk to me while I was at work on weekends. I lost him before I got out of our town (which is about 2 miles long) If you live in a mountainous area.... just buy the 2 mile radios because you won't get much more than that.

One of the radios had such a static-like reception that nothing can be heard from it. The battery life is only about four hours. I don't recommend these radios to any one.

the purchase price of the gmrs radio was good but i discovered from the fcc
office that i have to pay over 80 dollars for a license to cover my immediate family members to use all the stations.
i dont mind the cost of the license but i would have been more prepared to pay it if i knew from the add the cost of the license. the radio is sitting on my shelf to prevent abuse of the resricted frequencies till i can afford the license.
i bought the radios as an alternative to using cellular phone minutes.
it seems the cell bill would be cheaper.
