For an FRS unit, it is not bad. My only problem with this unit is that you have no channel lock. If you accidentally bump the channel changer, you will not hear anyone trying to contact you.

I bought these because I was splitting the package with one of my friends. when we tried them, since we don't use them at very far diatances, they worked great! where I live, there are a lot of buildings and trees, so for the distances we use them for, it is great! one of my other friends got the ones that has a charger and batteries for him and his brother, and the distance between us, they work with minimal to intermediate static, so they are fine. so, basically,they are the best to me.

This is a great set of radios for the price to include the charging station. Great range and clarity. I haven't had to use them no more than one kilometer, but with all the buildings in my area, these are great. Really practical without all the extras.
Con--NO KEYPAD LOCK! I had to constantly check to see if I was on the right channel due to the equipment I carry hanging across my chest, but to stay alert is to stay alive so I adapted.
Channel button qualifies as a manufacturing defect!.......2002-09-05
I bought a pair of FRS 104's for a recent trip to wine country and was quite disappointed. The channel button has NO LOCK, and is large and easy to bump (i.e. accidentally change). This flaw rendered the FRS 104 virtually unusable! You can't put this radio in your purse or pocket and still stay in touch. You can't even casually pick it up to carry on a conversation without the danger of inadvertant channel changes. I e-mailed Cobra about this, but was snubbed and told to take it up with my retailer. Fortunately Lowe's has a great exchange policy and I'm now the proud owner of 2 Motorola T6220's-for a mere 13 dollars more. I would NOT recommend this product to anyone. No way, No how.

Elgato vs Broadcast TV.......2007-12-03
Well, we had high hopes that the content of broadcast Tv would improve if we watched it on our iMac. No such luck. The Elgato unit works fine, but the TV content is still impoverished.

Elgato Eyetv Hybrid (NTSC) Very easy to install (at least on my iMac G5) and one can either use the stand alone wand or camp a small wand on a corner of your screen. The TV picture can be placed anywhere and sized to suit. Works great in the back ground and jumps to foreground when tapped. Just wish there was some way to get more than 125 channels.
If your desperate for OTA HD, go for it........2007-11-21
OTA (Over the Air) HD on my macbook through a dell 20" wide. It does get pretty hot, but I don't think that has been a problem so far. The software does crash from time to time, and does have the annoying habit of not being able to force quit, even a terminal force quit wouldn't kill it, have to unplug it or restart. The software for viewing channels and recording and editing is very good. remember, hd files are very large, about 3gigs an hour or larger. also this package does not come with an antenna. I ran to radio shack and got one for 10 bucks. I don't know if a better, bigger, or maybe outside antenna would work better. It seems my antenna juuuuuust pulls in the signals. If I move around, the signal can get a little jumpy. May just be my setup. if your holding off buying a big hd tv, and you have at least a 20" widescreen or bigger (FYI: Fox sports is 720p= 1280pixels by 720pixels and cbs sports and lots of tv shows are 1080i= 1920pixels by 1080 pixels) 150 bucks is a decent temporary fix until the BIGSCREEN time comes. for me that will be after I move next year.
Not good for PowerBooks.......2007-11-13
This product is fantastic, but only on my MacBook Pro. I missed the fine print telling me that to watch an HD signal I needed a dual G5 or Intel Mac. Since I wanted my old PowerBook (1.25 G4) to be the TV, I'm out of luck. But, the picture is incredible on my Cinema Display and MacBook Pro from the Philips HDTV antenna. I haven't noticed it get hot like other posters, but probably am not using it as much as they are.
The software included is quite satisfactory. My only complaint is the size of the recordings. A one hour digital recording was about 4 gigabytes. Seems like a lot.
