Excellent product. Very practical. Firmly sticks to the windshield and lets you have your i pod or cellphone at hand. You can also manipulate the arm so that you can have it where you want and where it don't interfere with your vision of the road. It's also very easy to mount and unmount... just in a few seconds. First of all, forget the 12 miles under normal urban circumstances. Given the generally line-of-sight propagation of UHF signals, none of the handhelds, including commercial and amateur, will deliver 12 miles under normal conditions. In an urban setting with houses and buildings, expect something more resembling one and a half miles of consistent communication. Two to five miles may be expected over more open territory.
Having said that, our family has been quite pleased with the pair we purchased. They have put some thought into the ergonomic design of this radio. It is not nearly as heavy or bulky as our older, commercial quality HT. It fits securely in the hand, has a clear display with a signal strength meter, clear sound quality, and a convenient placement of controls. The receiver appears to be a significant improvement over its predecessor, the PR 4000. It can use either subaudible tone or digital coded squelch; these are useful in a crowded environment.
Especially nice is the signal strength meter that registers all activity on the channel whether or not it actually opens the squelch. If you are not in a conversation, it lets you know there is other activity on the channel. If you are in a conversation, it alerts you to the fact your radio may not be interpreting the DCS word or the subaudible tone due to interference. That way, you may open up the squelch manually using the monitor button, so you do not miss parts of your party's transmission.
Even though I have access to commercial quality equipment, I find myself using the PR 4700 more and more of the time for simplex operations.
My biggest disappointment is how all of the manufacturers are exaggerating the range claims. My guess is Cobra probably feels like it has to use the same standards for marketing as other manufacturers, or lose in the competition.
