Great if you need a stand for your ipod!.......2007-09-14
This is the second Speck ipod case I've owned. My previous one was for my old dinosaur (20 gig 4th generation). A month ago it finally died after about 2 1/2 years. So I went out and bought a brand new 30 gig ipod video and the new Flip Skin. In terms of protection the Flip Skin & the Tough Skin are pretty comparable. They're fantastic; much better than a standard flimsy silicone cover. I accidentally dropped my old ipod a few times and the Tough Skin saved it.
About 6 months after I got my ipod I needed to bring it in to Apple for service. While waiting in line I noticed that with every ipod that came into the store the first thing they looked for was obvious signs of abuse or wear and tear (which would void the warranty). The tech guys were surprised that mine didn't have a single scratch on it; indeed it looked like brand new. I wouldn't own an ipod without a decent case. I'm sold on Speck products. I haven't seen anything else on the market that I feel offers the same level of protection.
Both the Flip Skin and the Tough Skin are very thick and will make your ipod bulkier. This was not an issue for me. I work as a children's entertainer and store all of my music on my ipod. Since it tends to get tossed around quite a bit, my main concern was protection. When I've spent a big chunk of change on a portable music player my concern is protecting my investment and making sure it will get me from one gig to the next reliably.
I've noticed Speck has changed small details in their cases over the years. My current Flip Skin fits great. As other reviewers mentioned, the hole around the headphone jack is a bit snug as is the hole for the hold switch, although I haven't had problems accessing either one. The Flip Skin allows me to sync with my desktop. However if you want to park your ipod in a cradle it won't happen in either the Flip Skin or the Tough Skin.
Why am I mentioning the Tough Skin at all in a Flip Skin review? The 2 models are very similar with the exception of the collapsible flip stand on the Flip Skin. For my purposes (work) the stand on the Flip Skin is indispensable. I can set up my sound system at a birthday party and park my ipod on my table, where I can see the screen easily. (I connect it to my sound system using a cord that attaches via the headphone jack.) I don't watch videos on it, if I did I imagine the stand would come in real handy on an airplane or in the office. But if the stand isn't important for you I'd recommend the standard Speck Tough Skin.

I got a 30gb video ipod for my husband for his birthday. I looked at arm band cases thinking they'd be good for running. But they all looked so bulky and awkward. Then I realized that if you put the ipod up against your arm with no case it, it by itself looks awkward and bulky! lol. These ipods are just too big for that. So I went with this case cause it seemed like, in it, the ipod could hit the floor a few times and come out fine. And I was right! It fits perfectly! And it looks awesome too! It doesnt cover any part of the screen, and the 'hold' button is a little hard to get too, but a small price to pay for ipod safety :)

The thick rubber skin will protect your iPod. I accidentally dropped my 80G iPod and was relieved to find that it was still OK. However, I found these features to be less than desirable:
1. as mentioned, the headphone jack needs to be larger to accomodate the thicker plugs
2. because of the thick skin, it is sometimes difficult to access the hold switch with your finger
3. the protective screen relies on the skin to keep it secure. However, if the window opening that holds it is not perfectly square, it is possible for the protective screen to move around a little, sometimes even fall out.
[2/2/07 Update]
I got tired of struggling to keep my headphone plugs securely set so I replaced this model with the one that didn't have a flipstand [...] The hole for the plug for that model accomodates the larger headphone plugs. It gives the same protection and I really didn't use the flip stand anyway so I don't miss it. You can also remove the little clip for the button so it doesn't get in the way.
As of this date, it also is cheaper.

Tried this new case early in recent release; very similar to early Speck rubberized case for video iPod, except with integral stand which flips open to allow your iPod to "sit up" on your desk or table to watch video content. Great idea.
Both this and the original non-flip rubberized Speck case are terrific in providing max protection for your iPod from scratching or, more important, dropping. Note that both limit docking opportunities, but I came to like the original case so much for the protection it affords, I switched to headphone connection for most applications, in the house, and in the car, as a "tradeoff" for protecting the iPod.
After receiving one of the earliest release versions of this new case, I advised Speck that the headphone jack hole should be a bit larger, to accommodate thicker stereo mini-plugs, and I presume they're addressing the issue. But overall, this case is super cool, and the flipper, when closed, virtually disappears from the profile of the case, so still OK to pop in a pocket, or wherever.
I tried many case for my 60G 5G video iPod. Speck was the best, by far.
