Problems with HDMI switching, poor user interface.......2007-12-09

I ordered the STR-DGR1000 receiver to get rid of the clutter of cables connecting my system by upgrading to a receiver with HDMI switching capability. The Sony receiver has problems from the first day with locking onto the signal from my cable box and would cycle through its various video input sources every time I switched channels. Sometimes it would lock on and sometimes it would require a power cycle before it would lock back on but it took at least 5-6 seconds to lock back onto the video signal for each channel change. I ended up having to run component cables for the video and just using the HDMI input for audio which essentially defeated the purpose of buying the system.

There were other problems too which included:

Bad connection on audio input terminals - Left channel would drop out and require jiggling of input cables to get audio back

Cloogey interface - The GUI interface is a good idea but Sony certainly didn't put much energy into the interface for this system. The manual is written cryptically and there are not good directions on many of the settings or on how changing one setting may affect another. There is also minimal manual control over individual speaker level outputs. The system tended to overpower my center channel speaker and not have enough power out to the front and rear speakers and there was no apparent way to adjust the output after several hours of tinkering with the settings.

I ended up sending this system back due to the multiple failures/inadequacies of the system. I know at $550 it's not a top of the line system but I would at least expect the basic functionality to work. Sony really put out a lemon with this one and I would recommend staying away from it...

LOVE IT.......2007-12-05

I used to use the Denon 4802. That was a nightmare to connect. This Sony was a breeze and is far easier to operate. In addition, I just love the quality of the Blu-Ray disks I use with it on a Samsung player.

Great receiver for the price!.......2007-11-28

When I recently upgraded to a Hi-def TV, I knew that I needed to get a receiver that could handle HDMI, and after much shopping around I finally decided to Go with this one, and I am very happy with that decision. The sound is AMAZING! The lows are especially nice, but everything is crystal clear. I also love all of the options for inputs. You can attach anything to this bad boy, and it is ahead of the curve enough that you won't need anything else for a long time, if ever! The only down side with this receiver is that the on screen menus are a bit quirky and the instructions are confusing at times. Programming the remote if you don't have the 3 digit codes is especially a pain. The instructions use that example to teach two things at once, which just needlessly confuses matters. The less than perfect user-friendliness is the only reason I leave 4 stars instead of 5. Ultimately, those are small issues and with some patience you can work through them. Don't let small matters like those deter you from considering this gem of a receiver!

Pleases my ears.......2007-11-12

I have just upgraded from a prior sony 7.1 system and I must say this one rocks. The auto sound adjustment seems to provide a better balance than I was able to provide before. The sound of guitars playing at o db is enough to cut your eardrums which is great. The only down side is the number of optical sound inputs and which inputs I had to use for my devices to match their sound outputs.

Better than more expensive Sony 5200ES.......2007-08-24

I purchased and returned the more expensive STR-DA5200ES as the majority of features are available in the STR-DG1000. Both models allow you to view set-up information on the television screen, and both have the auto calibration feature for speaker set-up, which is very easy and pretty accurate. The major difference is price, and after comparing both models side-by-side, not sure why one would spend an additional $600 - $800 for similar if not the same features. The 5200ES has a very nice on-screen set-up guide and useful tools during set-up, however, you can accomplish the same tasks with the DG1000. Once the receiver is set-up, I don't need the fancy on-screen interface anyway. I cannot comment on the HDMI connections as I make direct HDMI connections from individual components to my TV, thus eliminating the additional connections and cost of additional cables, etc. I have no issues with this receiver and have enjoyed excellent sound quality at all levels between low-mid-high ranges.
*** Note*** I did not purchase this model for it's HDMI up-conversion capabilities, only for 7.1 surround connections and sound quality.
