Form, Fit & Function in a Nice Package.......2007-01-16
Having recently upgraded my home theatre system I needed a multi-channel audio video receiver that would supply multiple input control and functionality in a relatively compact space. I wanted a receiver that would provide HDMI switching and be capable of powering large, wide range speakers. The JVC turned out to be ideal on both counts due to it's low profile yet ample power reserve allowing easy placement in my rather limited widescreen tv support shelf.
Although my HDMI DVD player interfaced beautifully, my cable service provided DVR didn't like the JVC's HDMI input and refused to pass hi-def material through the receiver. This necessitated using the DVR's and receiver's component outputs and inputs respectively. A call to my cable provider confirmed the DVR box's bad behavior and I was told I would have to wait for the providor's next upgrade. The good news is that I wasn't able to discern any significant loss of detail in hi-def material on a 1080P capable 73" widescreen DLP tv by using the component video and optical audio outputs. Your results may differ.
One feature of the JVC that I found particularly useful was it's built-in wireless USB audio streaming function. Installing the provided small antenna on the receiver and plugging in the transmitter to my desktop computer located in a different room was a snap. Now I can easily stream high quality music (uncompressed) and internet radio stations from my computer through my home theatre audio system. One caveat to be aware of is that like wireless internet, the provided USB wireless transmitter is affected by 2.4GHz home telephone systems and, believe it or not, some microwave ovens. If you have a 5.8GHz phone system you'll be fine. Wish I could say the same about the microwave.
While relatively easy to install, the JVC setup procedure requires considerable review of the comprehensive manual. I found that I had to jump around the instruction manual quite a bit before I was able to use the receiver effectively. The on screen guides are easy to follow although one has to drill through multiple menues.
The provided remote control works very well and features a retractable cover that allows one to access less used functions easily while simultaneously keeping the device uncluttered. The instructions on how to add additional external devices were very straightforward and worked flawlessly.
If you're in the market for an excellent sounding HDMI capable multi-channel AV receiver with reasonable funtionality and a relatively small footprint than I encourage you to consider this JVC receiver.
Great but be aware of wireless interference.......2007-01-06
The price, features, performance here is top notch. Everyone is having issues with HDMI connections right now so don't let that stop you, it is a problem for everyone and there is a learning curve.
The sound from the receiver is very good and the class D amp does run hot, they all do. This one is pumping out 150W per channel so the left side of the unit gets very hot. You will not want to put in in an enclosed audio cabinet without an additonal fan in the cabinet.
The usb wireless connection is a lot of fun and the sound quality is excellent as long as no other devices that interfere are running while it is in use. For me, my 5.8ghz cordless phone and microwave cause interference when they are in use. You can hold down the button for 3 seconds on the usb transmitter to try and change wireless channels but this did not help when the devices I mentioned were in use. I have not tried the corded connection.
Overall this is the best deal around for an AV receiver with a good amp and all the current tech features you could need.
Go else where if you want reliability!!!.......2006-12-01
I received this stereo on 11/29/06 as promised. I really liked the sound from my computer. A wonderful idea!!!! I just wish other manufactures would follow suit.
Out the box, my HDMI worked flawlessly. However, when I hooked up my DVD player, I got sound but no picture. When I hooked up my VCR, the same thing happened. I called JVC tech support and the first tier could not help me so I was told the second tier support would call me back in 2 hours. After 3 hours of waiting, I called JVC again. I was told by one representative that the hook up would need to be all HDMI or all composite or component this is totally different from the manual. It clearly states that this receiver will up convert all signals to HDMI.
I changed everything over and did get the DVD player to work. Actually, it was just a pass through and no switching took place. I then tried and tried in vain to get the VCR to show video; but no such luck.
I called JVC again; I was finally told that I might have something wrong with the switching and the unit would need to be repaired. (This has been a large problem for this particular model) I then said that this is a brand new system and I should not need to get it repaired. Well, I relented and asked where the nearest shop was for a repair; I was then told there were none near and the unit would need to be sent to the manufacturer for repair.
IF YOU ARE READING THIS REVIEW; I WOULD LOOK ELSEWHERE FOR RELIABILITY.
Amazon stands behind what they sell; and I could not be happier with their customer service. Unit goes back tomorrow.
Now, I am thinking about the Onkyo TX-SR674.
Nice stereo!.......2006-11-14
The USB plug is excelent. I hook up my lap top and have 2 weeks of non stop music. The sound is very good, just wish they would change there speaker terminals from the too close together screw type to any thing else!
The HDMI plug makes a world of diffrance with the amount of cords you need, just one!
Great receiver and GREAT JVC SUPPORT!.......2006-11-03
I received this receiver a couple days ago and had many problems with setup. I wanted this device for a couple of reasons, mainly because it includeded HDMI switching but also because my 42" LCD hangs on the wall and my components are about 35 feet away and I didn't want to run cables for every component to the TV. I wanted 1 HDMI cable to run from this device to the TV and 1 set of speaker wire. All other components I wanted to plug into this receiver.
At first attempt, I got video but no sound through the cable box, my DVD had sound but no video and my wireless PC Link worked flawlessly within 5 minutes of setup. I spent nearly 4 hours attempting everything I could think of, but failed to get it to work.
The next night, I decided to call JVC. A tech answered the phone on the second ring! She spent about 30 minutes on the phone with me trying to get it worked out but couldn't so she transferred me to the next level of support. He helped me immensely and in 20 minutes I was up and running perfectly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PRO'S:
Single point of communication between components and TV.
W/the included wireless transmitter, you can stream music from any PC or laptop and it will play through your speakers.
Many on screen configurable options.
Remote controls all of my components.
Sound is excellent.
Many input options.
Sleek looking.
CONS:
Difficult initial setup - my cable box had to be connected via component cables to the receivers VCR component in jacks. Who could guess that? There is another port labeled "DBS" - that seems like a more logical place.
Can ONLY connect 2 High Def devices at a time (1 component + 1 HDMI, etc).
A couple other reviewers here stated that you cannot play sound through your TV when connected to this receiver. Well, it's a receiver...it's not made to utilize your TV's speakers, that would be useless. However, if your TV has detachable speakers, you can just add speaker wire to them and connect them to the receiver and everything will work fine.

I searched far and wide to find these tapes at a reasonable price since I had 12 to order. This was the best price on the internet and there shipping prices were also great. In fact, they arrived much sooner than I expected, well packaged and ready to use. Great seller, I'll be back for future purchases.

bad job staying connected.......2006-04-22
I bought this product 9 months ago and used it to go online with my ps2. It connected but it kept on losing the connection everytime i play games like socom 2,socom 3, killzone, and other ps2 online games. I bought the logitech network extender and used that to get online. This product was similar to the nyko product. It worked well and it was free from losing connections. If your planing on playing online with easy hook ups then I would recommend the logitech network extender intstead of this product.
GUIDE FOR USING THIS FOR 2 PCs...........2006-03-02
I have to say first that I am quite please with this product (I bought it on some site for only $80). I have no clue how well this works with everything else, but using it to connect 2 computers in different rooms works great. It DOES however, take a little technical know-how to get it working correctly (in the way I happened to be using it), so to save people some trouble, here's a quick guide on how to link up 2 PCs together with the Net Extenders....
1. On the BASE unit, make sure the switch is flipped to "game console" or whatever instead of the computer side (this will shut off the wireless capabilities). Now here is where it gets technical.... You need 2 DIFFERENT KINDS OF ETHERNET CABLES TO MAKE THIS WORK.... A STRAIGHT-THROUGH (this is included it the package, so your covered on this side) and a CROSS-OVER cable.
Now here is something you must understand in order to get the cabling right. If you look at the color of the wires inside of the head of the cable (with the tab facing away from you) you should see the following color pattern for the STRAIGHT-THROUGH....
Orange/White, Orange, ect, ect. (the color/color indicates a wire that has 2 colors, but the white part is usually the only one visible). I left out the rest of the pattern to make it simpler, all you really need to remember is that the first pair of wires are going to include ORANGE.
A CROSS-OVER, however, has one side just like a STRAIGHT-THROUGH (Orange/White, Orange) and another pattern on the other side that begins with Green/White, Green.
2. Ok, you must have one side of your connection use a STRAIGHT-THROUGHT (you don't need to do anything special, just plug it in) and the other side needs to have the CROSS-OVER, but here's the MOST IMPORTANT PART: you MUST plug the Orange/White - Orange side to the Net-Extender, and the Green/White - Green to the computer (I would explain why, but it's a bit confusing so just nevermind why).
3. VIOLA! You now have a working connection between the two computers! Now about setting up the network.... you can find out about that somewhere else, I'm not here to tell you the ABSOLUTE BASICS.... even someone who knows how to set up a network could find this useful. So there you go, I just saved you about 2-3 1/2 hours of trouble-shooting and frustration.
Have fun!
Oh, but a side note: Using this for anything but gaming is NOT reccommended. If you try and transfer even MODERATELY sized files over a network using these, it will take WELL OVER 2 hours to transfer (that's for a 600-700mb file). Just use these for GAMING, NOT for setting up a complex network or ANY network where you need to send stuff back and forth.
Died once a month.......2005-02-11
My Nyko Net Extender died once a month. After replacing it twice, I am now in the market for another method of gaming online. I called Nyko's tech support and was told that they were continually upgrading the software because it was having compatibility problems with the PS2. I don't know how this works on the X-Box, but if you've got a PS2, look somewhere else for your networking solution.
Great product.......2005-01-07
When I first hooked this up to use for Socom 2 on PS2, I kept losing connection. I figured the thing was broken, but then I tried it for Xbox Live, and it works great.
BUY NOW!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-10-25
This product is really good so if u want to get wireless this is the item to buy it took me 20 minutes to hook up.
