Artisan Info: Born in a large urban center in 1961, Millie Coquis discovered the arts when she was a small girl. She was influenced by her mother, a painter whom she accompanied to exhibits outside Peru. Coquis studied translation and interpreting at the university level, and later took courses at the University of Geneva. As she became more and more involved with art, she studied photography in Buenos Aires and sculpture in Lima, working in stone, wood and clay. Coquis then began to experiment with silver. Since 1995, Coquis has worked full time in the arts. She has exhibited her work widely throughout Peru as well as in Washington, D.C. (2002) and Madrid (2003). In 1999 and 2000, she received awards for her sculptures in the Concurso Patronato de Plata del Peru. At the moment, she is working mainly in wood, stone and silver. Some of her work is featured in private collections in Peru as well as abroad.
