Great sound and value.......2007-04-26
After finding out my new Sony STR-DG710 6.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver would only control Sony Bravia HDMI-connected components and not my Sony DVPNS75H Single Disc Upscaling DVD Player or my Samsung TXS3082WH 30" Wide Slimfit HDTV, and had only one default A/V delay setting (68ms,) I returned the Sony and traded it for this Yamaha, and I'm glad I did.
Yamaha's 'SCENE' is featured on this receiver. There are 4 'scene' buttons at the bottom of the remote, each one representing a preset viewing configuration. For example, Scene 1 is what I press for tv viewing, Scene 2 is set for DVD viewing, Scene 3 is for XM listening, and Scene 4 is for radio listening. All I have to do is turn the receiver on, and hit one of the Scene buttons, and everything is ready to go. Very convenient. I can also change the Scene buttons to represent any viewing source I choose.
The tone controls on this receiver are simple and easy to operate--bass and treble controls. I would have liked to have had a mid-range control, but no receiver I looked at had such a feature. The XM radio sound is superior to the Sony, with a 'NEURAL' sound expanding circuit which adds bass and treble to the signal. Even with the 'Neural' feature turned off, my Audiovox CNP2000 XM Radio Mini Tuner With Cartridge + CNP2000H Home Dock with Antenna signal sounds much better than the Sony. There is also an HD Radio decoding circuit, but so far, only 2 XM radio channels are HD-one is classical and the other is a pop standards channel, I haven't listened to either, yet.
Audio cds and dvds sound great, which I expected with Yamaha Natural Sound. There are several options for audio: 2-channel stereo, direct (pristine) stereo, or 5.1 channel surround. All are accessable with a single touch of the audio button on the remote control--very convenient. One feature I really like is a variable A/V delay control, which allows the you to synchronize the 5.1 audio signal from the tv to the HDTV video signal, necessary because the tv takes a few milliseconds to process the hd video signal. The default A/V delay time is 68 ms, but since some tv stations use a different delay time to synchronize audio and video, this variable delay (from 0-250 ms) is really nice. The Sony only had a default setting of 68ms, which did not synchronize every tv station I watched.
The remote itself is easy to hold, just the right size, and it features glow-in-the-dark buttons, which really come in handy. The buttons are not illuminated, but glow bright enough to be visible while watching dvds in a low-light room. Surfing through XM radio channels requires changing the control source with a sliding switch on the side of the remote, and after doing that is a couple of times, it's pretty easy to do.
With regards to controlling other components, I'm impressed so far. There are several codes in the back of the owner's manual for controlling other components, and the remote responds well to these commands, and I have had no problems. I can turn any component on or off, I can shuffle through or go to chapters on dvds, and last night I discovered that by sliding the remote source switch to 'tv,' I can select which tv channel I want to watch (and the unit defaults to the HDTV channel, which is very cool) and I can also select the 'tv 'input, which is very handy. Basically, the only time I need to pick up another remote is when I eject a dvd, but even that only requires touching one button.
The receiver display--a very cool amber color--shows lots of info, especially for XM radio. There are several display options, including channel name and format, artist and song title, or station call letters, which was more than the Sony provided. This is especially helpful when I listen to Bob Dylan's Themetime Radio Hour--the artist and title appear in the display as soon as the song begins, which is sweet.
This receiver is 5.1 (the Sony was 6.1) but since all of my local HDTV digital broadcasts are 5.1 Dolby Digital, this receiver does the job just fine. I don't have the room in my house for a gigantic home theater system with an elaborate 6.1/7.1 setup, so I'll stick with 5.1 for now.
Based on great sound, nice features, and value, I would highly recommend this product to anyone.

Works okay. Battery life a bit shortlived though........2006-05-19
Got one at staples and plugged it in for a day and forgot about it.
So when I finally attached something to it, it was a week later.
A week of getting charged up.
Used it only for my pc and a 19 inch Dell LCD.
Loaded the cyberpower software, attached the usb cable between pc and usb.
Pulled the power cord from the outlet, to simulate a power outage.
The battery life quickly dropped from 100% and 30 minutes of power, down to about 80% and 11 minutes of power.
Auto-shutdown timer was set to 4 minutes until shutdown.
About 2 minutes into the outage, the battery was at 60% capacity and there was about 7 minutes of power left.
Then my pc went into auto hibernation.
Withthe side cover off, I saw my cpu fan stop turning. It appeared to be powered off.
I re-attached the power cord into 110 volts and pushed the power button, to get out of hibernation and back to using the pc again.
In a few seconds, I was at the log-in screen.
Pro's: it was on sale, about $20.

Con's: Battery life is GREATLY optimisic on the outside of the item's box. The "Typical runtime" for pc and lcd monitor is listed at 23 minutes. My battery life was dropping quickly; much faster than 23 minutes.
UPS software is simplistic, but I could NOT find anywhere to change the shutdown time. I would like it to shutdown in just 2 minutes vs 4 minutes. No where do I find any options other than 4 minutes.
I consider this a glorified surge protector. As long as the line power is cleaned up and I avoid occasional power sags, I'm happy. Those little, short lived sags that knock a pc offline is what hurts. This unit should suffice to prevent such happenings.
I bought based on price.
If price were not a consideration, I'd go with at least a 1000va. That way I'd have more time to stay up and running, in event of a power outage.
