Kenwood VRSN8100 Fineline Networked Audio/Video Receiver is a home-theater receiver that's future-friendly because it's engineered to work with a PC as a valid source of home entertainment. Indeed, as large-screen TV and HDTV sets begin to penetrate the market, they will offer greater capabilities as a computer monitor as well. The VRSN8100 is designed to allow computer music and video to be played through your home-theater system. The receiver lets you interface with your PC via a Wi-Fi® or wired Ethernet network. Navigation screens displayed on your TV make it easy to browse the contents of your hard drive and select audio, video, or still picture files to stream to your home theater system's speakers and TV. There's also a front-panel PC card slot that lets you display photos stored on your digital camera's memory card (adapter not included). In addition, there are 2 front-panel A/V inputs, one of which is dedicated exclusively to gaming systems (it includes an optical digital input for Dolby Digital surround sound when used with compatible gaming systems). As with other receivers, there's an integrated AM/FM radio. What takes it beyond "future-friendly" is that it's ready for you now! Get the most out of your home-theater system. The digital age has brought new forms of entertainment to your computer screen, but it certainly has not overshadowed the surround sound home theater experience. The Kenwood VRS-N8100 Audio/Video Control Center with Network Function seamlessly merges your entertainment system with your home computer. The rear-panel Ethernet connector lets you stream audio and video files from your computer to your home theater system. With the VRS-N8100, your entire family can enjoy the multimedia digital files stored on your computer through the sound quality of your home entertainment system.
The VRS-N8100 Control Center channels gaming, music, movies, and online digital multimedia files through your home theater system. View larger. |
Kenwood has thought of all the possibilities with this control center. Plug a game console into the front-panel game audio/video input (complete with a digital audio connection) and the VRS-N8100 will detect when you turn on the game console, and automatically select that input and the proper surround sound processing. The Single Zone Dual Source function lets you listen to your game's sound through headphones, while the rest of the family can enjoy music through speakers. Plus, this function features Dolby headphone processing that creates a totally out-of-the-box 5.1-channel surround sound effect through any pair of ordinary stereo headphones, so you won't have to sacrifice sound quality to play your favorite games. And the included universal pre-programmed remote control is ready to go with Xbox and PlayStation2 codes. With the Kenwood Control Center, your family can quit fighting over the home theater, and everyone can enjoy the system at the same time.
Loaded with inputs and outputs, this control center accepts a wide array of components. View larger. |
Of course, the control center is also a great general receiver with plenty of inputs for a wide array of components. When you watch movies, the VRS-N8100 puts you right in the middle of the action with Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES 96/24 surround sound, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx transforms ordinary two-channel stereo music sources -- CDs, cassette tapes, and radio -- into a 6.1-channel surround sound experience. The PurePath digital power amplifier delivers 130 watts to each of six channels, so your games, movies, and music will really rock the house. And with the ADI SHARC 32-bit DSP processor, high-resolution digital volume control, and rigid chassis construction rounding out the VRS-N8100's features, you can rest assured that this control center will deliver accurate performance at all signal levels.

Cannot Detect Server!!.......2007-07-06
I've owned this receiver now over a year. Overall, it's been pretty good with the exception of the network function, which has never worked (cannot detect server). I've allowed it thru all firewalls and even connected a cat 5 cable straight from the cpu to the receiver( bypassing the router); same result! Kenwoods' online tech support takes forever to respond and insists it's a firewall issue. Also, the component assignment feature is difficult to set-up.
Defective right out of the box! TWO TIMES!!!.......2007-06-05
I ordered one of these receivers from Target. Had the same error as two other purchasers (straight into Standby mode after powering up) I returned it and ordered another (figured what was the likelihood it would happen again?) Guess what? The SECOND one was broken as well. All Kenwood's customer service department said was "take it to a certified Kenwood repair shop and they'll fix it." Well, I'm returning it and will NEVER buy Kenwood products again!!!
Defective out of the box, horrible customer service........2007-04-27
I have no idea how this product is supposed to perform. I purchased this unit against the recommendations of others, due to over 20 years experience with Kenwood products in my home, at work and in my car, but this was an unmitigated disaster. I accepted the limitations in connections (no HDMI, no upscaling, little flexibility) for the size and supposed features. I connected everything that needed to be connected, double checked all speaker connections to ensure no shorts, turned on the unit and it went into standby. After 3 hours of rechecking all connections, swapping out cables and resetting the unit, I still didnt get anything other than fault/stand by. I went so far as to disconnect everything, and the unit went into standby. I expressed my frustration to the Kenwood customer service people and they recommended I check my cables. When I mentioned that the unit faulted with nothing connected, they sent the address of a service center, 20 miles away and recommended I take it there for service. Not being an acceptable answer, I sent an email to Kenwood customer service, the response to which was the equivalent of "Who cares, send it back then." without any acknowledgement of the inconvenience or frustration of thinking I could get a quality product from a company I trusted for a long time. One would think the units are at least tested before leaving the factory, but apparently not. I returned the unit, went back to the recommendations of others and will be phasing out the rest of my Kenwood products simply for the reason of the uncaring customer service. If you get one that works, great, good for you, but why risk it? Better to buy a product that has all the connection flexibility you need for now and future use..stay away from this one unless you like frustration.
Lots of functionality for the price.......2006-12-28
I was looking for a receiver with decent performance (wattage, THD etc), but my main requirements were network functionality and Dolby headphone. It also has a suprisingly large number of Inputs for such a slim form-factor.
First, the network functionality: I hooked the receiver to my router and installed the provided server software in one of my PCs. The receiver detected it, and displayed photos (JPGs), a couple home videos that I encoded as DivX AVI a some WAV music files, all of which I dragged-and-dropped into the software. The receiver played them all without any glitch. The software could have been a bit more poweful. It converts the JPGs that I imported and resizes them which results in a much lossy compression. Also, when we run a slideshow of the photos in the TV, there doesn't seem to be a way for speeding it up or pausing it. Also, it does not have parental controls. Would be nice if some of the digital media could be password protected. I've been researching for a media center solution where I can keep all my digital media in a remote PC and play them on my entertainment center as needed. I'm really glad I bought this.
Dolby Headphone: The second important feature. Helps while watching movies without disturbing the kids while they are sleeping. You'll have to really hear the Dolby headphone to believe it. The difference between this and the stereo headphone is like day and night. You can plug any normal headphone into the front-panel headphone jack and the receiver encodes the signals into Dolby headphone and sends it out, providing a very spatial 5.1 effect with just a normal headphone!!!
It also has Dobly virtual speakers if you don't want to run the wires for the rear speakers....I haven't tested it though since I have a 5.1 setup. I paired this with Yamaha NS-SP1600 5.1 speaker system and am not disappointed at all.
And for $250, nothing can beat it.
Good receiver with inoperable add-ons........2006-12-15
Network option never worked. Could never see server.
Poor speaker conections.
Component video swithching is poor. Shows banding and breaks up in heavy action.
Receiver is very detailed though.

Plays burned DVD's, but lacks a few features.......2006-12-16
I've had an older model Panasonic 7" LCD for some time now and it works great except for the fact that it does not play burned DVD's. However, this one by Dual does! I've burned quite a few DVD's in DVD-R format and the Dual XDVD8181 has taken them all without a fuss.
The CD Player is nice (nothing special) and radio works well. Also the AUX Input for the Ipod interface doesn't allow you to control the Ipod with the Touchscreen. You need to use the Ipod itself to change songs. The "iPlug" connector is simply an RCA audio (Red/White, L/R) to stereo mini-jack (female) input so you can basically connect anything that has a stereo mini jack output to it.
Installation was straight-forward if you're technically inclined. My only gripe is that I was not able to install the unit flush with the dash because of the way the LCD Screen folds up. If you try to make the unit flush, the LCD screen gets caught when it tries to open up. The only way this can be installed is by having the unit stick out of the dash about 1 inch (maybe a little less). This is not a big deal, but for those of you who are picky about asthetics, this might annoy you.
It has an input for a rear view camera if you're in to that. It also has RCA preouts (Front, Rear, and Subwoofer) but the Subwoofer preout is mono. You'll need a Y-cable if you want to split it to simulate stereo for the subwoofer (but who really needs stereo output for the subwoofer?)
One more annoyance is that if you're like me and you want to have a DVD playing while driving (not legal, but whatever), you can't simply ground the wire that's supposed to go to the parking brake. With my old Panasonic I was able to do this to "trick" the DVD player in to thinking I was parked. The way this one works is that you have to enable the parking brake, disable, then re-enable within a few seconds, then after 5 seconds of delay, the picture will show. Basically it needs to go: Ground, off, Ground. I bypassed this security measure by buying a push button switch from Radio Shack and wired the "parking brake" wire from the unit, to the button, then to the ground. So all I need to do is push the button on, push it off, then push it on again to view DVDs while driving.
For the price, this is really a good buy. Lacks add-on navigation option, integrated ipod controls via touchscreen, and flush-mount ability.. so I gave it 4 stars.
Pros:
- Price (Best bang for your buck compared to other brands)
- Plays burned DVDs (DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+/-RW)
- 3 sets of RCA Preouts
- AUX Input
- Touchscreen
- Cool blue illuminated buttons
- Remote control included
- Plays MP3 CDs
Cons:
- No true Ipod control, just AUX input
- Prevents simple hacking for DVD viewing while driving, but you can still bypass (read my hack above)
- No add-on navigation option
- Does not mount flush with dash (due to the way the LCD screen opens)
Thoroughly impressed.......2006-12-02
Installation was a breeze. I was able to bypass the parking brake switch using instructions found on the Internet and a switch from Radio Shack. The picture is brilliant, even on sunny days. Sound quality is acceptable. The Loudness function is a bit overbearing, so I leave it off. Otherwise, sound quality is acceptable.
I like how it gives me the option of the using the knobs and buttons, which are much easier to deal with when the vehicle is in motion. The CD player goes from shuffle mode back to normal playback every time I restart the car -- a minor annoyance. There's a GPS navigation add-on for this but the price is high.
Great DVD Player.......2006-11-20
I just bought this DVD player for my corolla, and i have to say, it is a very good player for the price. I did have a little trouble with installing it (as for the deck size not wanting to let my console fit back on) but after some alterations, i got it to fit.
The screen is about as good as it gets for one of these in this price range. Very bright and colorful. The controls take a little getting used to but after a little while of playing with the touch screen, you get it figured out. Plays everything i've put in it yet, some CD's and most MP3 CD's, it will display the track names and what CD you have in. I also like it because it has seperate bass and subwoofer controls for people with subwoofers. I can also use the line-in for my sirius radio instead of dealing with FM transmitting which can be a pain in the... if your driving far or just cant find a clear frequency.
I recommend this to anyone who wants a nice in-dash DVD player.
The only bad thing is you have to have an emergency break on to watch DVD's (there are ways around it, but they aren't legal)

Customer Reviews:
High expectations...Low results!.......2005-02-24
This is a copy of my review of the SmartHome Intercom/Hand-held review as this radio is a part of that package...
I was thrilled when GE came out with a base/intercom station and rechargable hand-held radio conbination. Being an owner of previous GE models such as the GE 35840 (see my review about that one here on Amazon) and the GE 35810, I was enthuastic to try the new model. Was I disappointed!
I expected the SmartHome line of radios would have similiar features as the previous models of GE radios, but it was nothing like it. No weather broadcase reception. The scan didn't scan the CTCSS codes. No programmable memories available. Features that made the 35840 a great little unit were left out of the newer model.
The base station didn't have a rechargable battery back-up option. It will let you put AA alkaline batteries in them, but who wants to waste their money on replacing batteries when the base station could have been designed to use the same rechargable battery pack as the hand-held unit. Poor design!!!
Well, maybe the performance will be good!? NOT!!!!! The sound quality was terrible. Sometimes it was difficult to make-out what the other person was saying. Man, was I REALLY disappointed!
I know what you are thinking..."Hey, you just got a bad unit." I thought of that, too, so I bought a second set. Guess what? SAME STORY!
GE really bombed on this one. Their previous radios worked great and were, in my opinion, one of the best deals on the FRS radio market. This new "SmartHome" stuff just was not a SMART idea on GE's part. They should have built on their previous successes and utilized a great platform like the 35840 and made a rechargable unit and base station based on that platform. Why re-invent the wheel?
Anyway, don't waste your money on the SmartHome setup. The older GE's like the 35840 and 35810 are a good buy and you can still find them.
