Whether you're looking to round out your home theater system with a good pair of rear satellite speakers or you need a compact speaker duo for your stereo amp, the AS-B1.2 bookshelf speakers qualify with flying colors. Each bass-reflex speaker is equipped with a 5.5-inch injection-molded polypropylene woofer with a rubber surround that handles the lows and mids, along with a 1-inch Teteron dome tweeter that reproduces amazingly crisp, detailed highs. The drivers combine to create a solid 60 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response that blends beautifully with the other speakers in a surround sound configuration. More impressively, the speakers' tuned ports deliver an extended bass response that easily belies their small size, so you needn't worry about the AS-B1.2s sounding excessively tinny.

Additional audio specifications range from a crossover point of 2.0 kHz to a sensitivity rating of 90 dB to power handling of 125 watts. And as with all quality speakers, the AS-B1.2s boast sturdy gold-plated, five-way binding post terminals that work with audiophile-grade cable up to 12 gauge in thickness. Want to use standard pins or banana jacks instead of bare wire? No problem. All this in an attractive black ash cabinet that looks great next to modern flat-panel displays and traditional tube TVs.

Though the AS-B1.2s work with almost any home theater system, they sound particularly good when teamed with other speakers from Athena's Audition series. ....that's because you don't have to spend alot to get amazing sound! Right now I have these hooked up to my Carver integrated amp (100wpc) and running them with a pair of Polk Audio Tower speakers and 200 watt Creative Soundworks sub. Lately I have been running them by themselves (no sub, no Polks) and the sound is quite good. The clarity, sound stage, imaging is all good. The obvious is the low end is NOT going to be what you would get once a sub is in the loop, but what low end that is there is is good. Mid's are clean and the highs are crystal clear! Listen to PACO DE LUCIA, AL DI MEOLA AND JOHN MCLAUGHLIN'S CD (all acoustic guitars) and you will be amazed!
How a company can get this much out of such an inexpensive and smallish speaker should amaze me, but sometimes, I wondered why more companies weren't producing this type of speaker in this price range. It obviously can be done............I paid all of $99 for my pair.
Buy a pair and give them a listen, you WON'T BE SORRY!!!

Incredible value - awesome musicality........2007-01-07

The Athena AS-B1.2 offers unparalleled value for the money. In my low-cost kitchen system paired with a Sonic Impact Super-T amp ($140) and an iPod they do a great job presenting music. The midrange is right: vocals have amazing presence and fidelity. There's wonderful startle factor and finesse. Imaging is very good too. Vocalists sound like they're in the room and I frequently stop what I'm doing (the system is in my kitchen - so I'm usually cooking) to listen - a very good sign. Part of the magic is their excellent sensitivity. 90db/watt sensitivity allows the low-powered Super-T to shine. This combination is really magical - but these easy-to-drive speakers will sound good with any decent amp.

There are plenty of drawbacks - as you would expect at this price point: Mid-bass is enhanced by a huge rear facing port. This helps these little speakers have some nice bass heft - but at the expense of some midbass bloat. There is no low (below 55hz) bass to speak of - but no surprise there. Large scale orchestral works and massive hard rock pieces feel a little small. These little speakers don't look too fancy - they are made of cheap feeling MDF and sound hollow and thumpy when rapped with a knuckle. Despite this - there are no resonances in evidence. It's clear that the right compromises were made; the tweeter is very good, and is assisted by a slight horn loading. It's sins are mainly those of omission. Given the level of musical enjoyment these things pump out for the money any negative comments are just minor quibbles. These things perform way way beyond their league. I really really enjoy mine.

Maxell makes a great battery although they aren't quite the best I've ever used; but these batteries will nevertheless show you how good they are made once you try them. I really like this because I often travel by public transportation and I use my portable CD player to listen to music. I always get a lot of use out of these Maxell AA batteries.

Of course, these AA batteries can be used in anything that requires them--not just portable CD players. The pack of forty offers value, too; and that's important in these expensive times!

Use these batteries before their expiration date. The expiration date will always be several years into the future; but some people still have them lying around in a dresser drawer anyway. The problem is not only do they lose their potency; the batteries also begin to corrode. When the batteries corrode eventually a whitish powdery sticky substance begins to leak out of them and this makes a mess--trust me!

Do NOT dispose of these or ever place these in or near a fire. They could indeed explode. I wouldn't carry them loose either--they should be protected in their cardboard case or they should be already installed in your portable CD player, your flashlight or whatever device you placed them into.

Overall, these Maxell AA size batteries are one of the better choices if you need AA size batteries. I recommend them for any device that needs AA size batteries.

Good batteries for the price.......2007-02-22

So you really can't beat 40 AA batteries for $10. However, these guys really don't last that long when you are constantly using them. But what really does? I bought them when I purchased a Nintendo Wii, because I figured that they are cheaper than buying rechargeable batteries. I'd say that I go through a set of two batteries every other week (the Wii really eats up power). The value pack is nice because it separates the batteries into 10 sets of 4 batteries so they're easily transportable and don't shuffle around. Overall I recommend this product if you need a lot of cheap batteries. If you need batteries that last longer, go to the more expensive ones or rechargable ones.

AA Batteries in Bulk.......2007-02-08

You gotta love this deal! A bunch of AA batteries at a killer price with next to nothing for shipping. Obviously I just got them so I can't yet say how long they'll last, but the first 8 that my 8 year old has eaten up in his remote RC monster Jeep have run perhaps 30% longer each than their fully charged rechargable counterparts. I feel like they were a great deal and I'd buy them again in a month or two when this batch runs low.
