Holy crap, what is the deal with the scarcity of digital output?.......2007-03-10
It's silly that a $[...] ipod needs this item, but it does. It is awkward sticking out of the end, and it doesn't even stay in that well, but until there is something better (like apple redirects their attention to making their units sound as good as possible, which would mean the audio information could be sent out digitally for instance, or at least each successive generation of ipod would sound better than the last instead of mixed results, or even that the ipod units themselves could accomplish on their own what this makes possible for headphones) get this. This device enables a line out, which all docking stations accomplish, but does it for headphones, thus bypassing the ipods headphone amp, significantly improving the sound. The line out is just a little loud to plug headphones directly into, but you can find headphone attenuaters that are a short cable with a volume knob. Sure makes one that comes standard with a pair of headphones I got from them. Incidentally, I listen to wav files on my ipod, which at 60 gb holds over a thousand songs. Originally I listened to mp3's and loved the convenience, but then I discovered that instead of near cd quality, you could have better than cd quality (as compared to my typical sony discman portable cd player). Not as convenient, but why not have the music sound as good as possible? It's less fatigueing and just better. Simple as that.
Oh yeah. Now you can have a fire wire connection too.
Perfect Match.......2006-11-10
I needed a line-out device that would also allow me to get USB power. It works great. Do be carefull to order the right unit - Sendstation also makes a USB/firewire device which I ordered by mistake.
Fantastic tool!.......2006-03-28
The PocketDock gives superior sound, taking advantage of the full-range feed from the bottom-end connection, compressed into the conventional cable need your stereo has. It's easy to use and easily portable, compact and affordable.
Much easier and cheaper than using an Airport (or other solution that feeds from a PC) since that requires going back to whatever room the music's fed from whenever you want to make a change. Much higher quality than running a cable from the headphone jack, whose signal is flattened and muffled.
Of all the accessories you could get for your iPod, this one will add the most value for the buck.
Works well, just wasn't for me.......2006-03-21
I've used both this item and a SiK IMP(Din). Both do exactly what they're supposed to do, give a line out and a firewire connection. Sound quality is good on both. A couple things I didn't like about this:
1) The Sendstation didn't have the spring loaded clips/buttons to release it from the dock connector on the bottom of the iPod. The SiK does. The Sendstation still has a pretty secure connection without this feature, but the SiK feels even more secure.
2) Even though the SiK has two long wires coming out of it, which makes it a little inconvenient, the SiK's actual dock connector part is very small, same size as the apple connector. The Sendstation has the sockets for the lineout and firewire right on the dock connector so it is MUCH bulkier than the SiK. To me, this proved to be even more annoying than the two wires coming out of the SiK since you could at least bend the wires out of the way on the SiK.
The two nags I had are very minor and might not be relevant to most of you out there so you may choose to ignore it. Overall though, functionally, there is nothing wrong with this thing and it is pretty small and portable. Looks cooler than the SiK too. Bottom line, sound from it is fine, the dimensions didn't suit me.
Works perfectly.......2006-03-04
It's a simple device that does exactly what it says it does. Sound quality is noticeably improved over the headphone jack on my 3G iPod; the headphone jack's not bad but the line out is cleaner and bypasses the on-board EQ. It's nothing fancy, it just works perfectly.
The lack of a positive lock on the dock connector can be a good thing. The Nano needs to have its headphones unplugged before a locking dock connector can be removed. The PocketDock solves this problem when charging it.

Spend the extras $ on reliable product.......2007-09-05
My device did operate more than once. However, it appears to depend on the computer...or maybe it is the weather...or the time of day. I really don't know when this thing will or will not operate. This appeared to be a good deal at the time, but it's lack of consistent performance means $50 wasted. Meantime, I am back to using my 1GB Memorex...
Dead after one use........2007-05-15
I purchased the Excalibur 4GB drive from another website that sold it new in its original packaging. I used it one time to transfer roughly 1mb of files from one computer to another. Later that day I tried to use it again for the same purpose. Upon plugging in this device it no longer worked and I was getting "the click of death". Let this be a warning to anyone considering buying a portable usb drive that uses a hard disk instead of flash memory.
