poor FM sound.......2007-01-07
The Insten FM-10 I got has a extremely annoying whine that is present all the time. At first I thought it was a ground loop problem but the whine is present whether the car is running or not. Unfortunately the online seller I bought it from hasn't responded to any emails so I don't know if mine is defective or not. I suspect they are all of very poor quality and mine is representative. On the upside it does work well as a charger.

The speaker is a 2-way design and ported for strong bass response, using two 5.25-inch HOP drivers with a 1-inch Nano-Fine balanced-dome tweeter. HOP (Highly Oriented Polyolefin) is a proprietary Sony speaker-cone material offering high strength, low weight, and low resonance, resulting in excellent transient response, high power handling (up to 150 watts, maximum), and flat frequency response, which extends from 85 Hz all the way to 50,000 Hz, thanks in large part to the tweeter.
The balanced-dome tweeter represents a Sony refinement of the classic dome tweeter, which places the voice coil inside the tweeter's circumference for superb dispersion and reduced distortion than traditional tweeters.
The SS-CN550H is magnetically shielded to prevent image distortion when placed on or near your television. It comes with adhesive rubber feet to stabilize the unit atop your television and a single length (8.2 feet) of speaker cable to simplify hookup with your AV receiver.

Excellent, Inexpensive center speaker.......2007-12-11
This center speaker is excellent for its price. I was having problems hearing the dialog on my previous center speaker, which cost more than this one. I switched to this one and have been quite satisfied. The quality of the sound is clear and at an appropriate volume when used with my other speakers.

This is a pretty basic piece of home theater equipment - what can you say about it? I purchased it to replace a very similar speaker from Sony's last model lineup. In fact this speaker is now being replaced by yet another model line, which is why I wanted to pick one of these up before they became harder to find. This matches with my floor standing and surround speakers already in place.
I won't claim that Sony speakers sound or perform any better, or even as well as other brands - but they sound fine to me, and after some 5 years of using and abusing varying products from their lineup I've never really been dissapointed with my price/performance ratio observed.

Great performance at reasonable price........2007-04-07
I was in the market for a center channel speaker to replace an older JBL center speaker. Long term I would like to invest in refinishing my basement and setting up a high-end surround system. But, for now, I only wanted to spend $100 or less for good quality. I found just that in the Sony SS-CN550H center speaker. I am no audio expert, I only know what sounds good to me and have been very please with the performance of this speaker. I recommend this speaker for anyone in need of a reasonably priced speaker with great performance.
Does the Job, but not Blown Away.......2007-01-04
I bought this to replace the aging micro center channel speaker I had been using for years. And while this is a definite improvement, I must say that I haven't been overly impressed with this. Dialogue can still be difficult to make out at times, and I just haven't noticed this speaker as much as I thought I would. Maybe that's what a surround speaker was designed for, but I guess I just was expecting more.
