Designed for hi-fi or, using 2 pairs, full-resolution surround sound music listening, these 3-way/4-driver speakers each employ one 3.25-inch midrange and two 6.5-inch Kevlar/HOP bass drivers, as well as a 1-inch Nano-Fine balanced-dome tweeter. Nano-Fine tweeters extend the speakers' frequency response well beyond the 20 kHz limit of CD audio, all the way out to 50 kHz--perfect for today's high-resolution music formats like Super Audio CD (SACD) and DVD-Audio. The Nano-Fine design makes each tweeter extremely still and light--ideal properties for a tweeter.

The SS-MF650H's ported (bass-reflex) cabinets permit the larger drivers to move more air, significantly enhancing the speakers' low-end output. The speakers use precision crossover assemblies to ensure blending while recreating a seamless sound stage. Today's high-resolution stereo and discrete surround formats can reproduce the same sound out of all speakers. If a variance in drivers, crossover, or materials occurs, the pitch and surround illusion can suffer. Sony speakers are designed using matching driver compliments and crossovers to ensure blending from left to right and from front to rear.

The Kevlar fiber cone material offers an ideal mix of strength and low weight. Traditional driver materials must increase mass to provide greater amounts of rigidity, but these materials tend to be slow and inaccurate. Kevlar, combined with Sony's HOP (Highly Oriented Polyolefin), delivers extremely high strength and low mass. This allows for high power handling (up to 180 watts per channel) and ideal frequency response. HOP is a proprietary speaker-cone material offering high strength, low weight, and low resonance, contributing to the speaker's excellent transient response, high power handling, and flat frequency response. Frequency response extends down to 40 Hz, giving you all but the lowest audible octave of bass.

The balanced-dome tweeter represents a Sony refinement of the classic dome tweeter, which places the voice coil inside the tweeter's circumference for superb dispersion and reduced distortion than traditional tweeters.

i ordered these sony ss-mf650h floor speakers because of the reviews on them and when i hooked them up to my harmon kardon 3480 i was blown away by their ability to handle all ranges of volume with no distortion .the first piece i played was the grand canyon suite c/d at very loud volume and the speakers pushed out crystal clear sound. im in love

The MF650H speakers are amazing! It looks at first, as if my purchase would be a disappointment, but you know what they say about looks.

They push lovely warm or punchy bass, and suit my needs for video gaming, music, and movies.

They don't take up much space, and sound good at any volume. A wonderful pair of tower speakers.

Great buy for the money........2007-03-12

Went to high end stereo store listened to 2200.00 French made speakers. The 650's sound close to these, what do you think I bought? I have been playing music for many years, My 20 year old Advent Legacys' finally bit the bullit. If you are concerned about how you spend your hard earned money do not hesitate to buy the Sony. I heard JBL, Joma, Boston A.,Klipsch,Bose etc., granted these speakers all sound good but for the money no way. The Sony is a great bang for your buck. Go out and listen to the various brands and make your choice.

Ok, I'll say more.

If you buy these speakers, follow these steps:

1. Get them home.
2. Unpack them carefully.
3. Connect them to your receiver with decent quality speaker cable (not the stuff that comes with them).
4. Play your favorite track & enjoy.

You will be greeted with crisp highs, full mids & smooth, deep bass that seems like it shouldn't be coming from 6.5" woofers. If at first you find the sound a bit bright, let them burn in for a few hours. All new speakers benefit from various lengths of break-in time. I find these sound better every time I play them.

If you like to tinker (like some of us), you will need to look past the fact that they don't employ a real crossover, and that the front & rear walls are made of particle board (the sides are MDF). Would they sound better if these things were different? Probably a little, but they would also be WAY more expensive.

One thing I would recommend to those comfortable with taking them apart - replace the internal wires with better cable...it makes a big difference.

Bottom Line - at $200 I would give these 4 stars. I paid $120 for the pair. That deserves 5 stars.

Elegance in Sound.......2006-10-26

I was a little skeptical of these speakers being able to create dynamic sound for their reasonable price. When I installed these I was blown away. They bring out the mid and low range with no flaws. These speakers were made to be played loud. For anyone who is intrested in investing a reasonable amount of money on great speakers this is the way to go.
