Canon XL H1.......2007-12-25

I went from a Sony TRV900 to the Canon XL H1 videocamcorder but I have the great reviews of the Canon to be some what exaggerated. I am a Female Reconstructive surgeon who tapes alot of operative procedures for various pharmaceutical companies. I complete one project with the Canon and borrowed a Sony HDR FX1 for another and during editing on an Apple 30" monitor the quality of the video with equal working conditions was heavily favored with the Sony HDR-FX1. The colors precision and vitality were vastly superior with the Sony. Canon left me with a somewhat bland and less accurate photo. Again I am using artificial light but the few outdoors shots for comparison use only still demonstrated a less detailed performance from the Canon. The Canon is durable, ergonomic and easy to shoot with but I feel Sony HDR-FX1 is a better product

Great Value... Why Pay More?.......2007-03-01

This product does what it says it will do. It feels and looks well made with the only one exception. The outter plactic ring around the adjustable lens on mine broke years ago but it didn't affect my useing it or it's ability.

It does what the higher priced ones will do but at a really great price! It really does a very good job at night and for distance. You can switch the extra light feature (for total darkness) on and off and really see the diffence. It's a lot of fun for summer night games and watching animals at night without them noticeing you. The Hand strap adjusts both in lenth and also moves around the lenses, for easy personal grip style.

I've had mine for over 5 years already. The Battery lasts long, I haven't used it fifteen hours worth but the same battery is still working all this time! The battery/housing is easy to change without tools and fits snugly/ejects easily.

The Picture is admitidly grainey but considering the absince of light still seems very impressive and clear. I think you'd have to shell out much much more to see much better than this. This brand has seven models and this is the entry level one the rest of the line are above $1,000 and cap out at $4,500.
