very disappointing.......2007-10-27
I purchased this product because of the good rating on Amazon and other reviews. Pictures produced from this printer were good, but not stellar. Then, after fewer than two years, my Canon Pixma died. I was not an overuser of this product, but the strap that moves the printing cartridges failed suddenly. Moreover, it is an ink hog. My old Dell 960, which is now attached to my husband's computer still works fine after six years of use. Don't waste your money on this product.

The printer is great when it works. Photos and text all look very nice. Text is on par with a twice more expensive HP AIO, and photos are actually better. However, mine borked on its third set of genuine cartridges, deciding to stop recognizing the blue cartridge, requiring a restart. Bothering with the warranty is not worth it because shipping would cost more than the thing itself - to the garbage it goes....
Others must have had a better luck with this machine. As for me, I am paying extra to go to another brand.

Worst Printer Ever!!.......2007-08-16
I absolutely detest this printer. The idea is nice, but the machine is horrible. The first one broke after 2 weeks and we got a warranty replacement. The warranty replacement has issues with the ink catridges sometimes not being read by the machine. It is very difficult to use, so confusing. And the online help is worthless. I will NEVER buy another Canon product. They used to be a good company, but no longer.

Unreasonable ink consumption, regular messages of ink needs which prevent use until changes are made, and 3 minutes of settings required to make a copy of an 8 1/2 x 11 original onto plain paper make this an unacceptable product in my opinion. It produces an excellent photo, interestingly better from computer hard drive than directly from chip using extra cost XD to CF adapter. Will not function if one of the 2 black cartridges are low. I use another printer for routine printing from computer, and regret getting rid of my old printer which had copying capability when I purchased the MP500. Cannot recommend for anything except photos. Would not purchase again.

I bought this printer as a replacement for an all-in-one Epson that I had more problems with than I could ever count. I had heard Cannon was a very high quality, dependable brand for printers. After quite a bit of research, I ultimately decided on the MP500. I've had this printer for quite a while now and absolutely LOVE it! The ink has lasted longer than any other printers I've had,the print quality is very good, and I never have to worry if it is going to work or not.
I would highly recommend this printer to anyone looking for one!
Disappointed.......2007-08-10
I have had this printer for almost a year. It worked very well until it ran out of ink. For some reason trying to replace the second black cartridge will not accept it. That means the printer will not work. I paid a repairman close to $100 and he could not get the ink cartridge to go in either. Even though Cannon is his favorite printer he suggested to get rid of this printer and try a different brand.

I have owned many printers and scanners over the years and this one (for the price) beats all the others, hands down!

I had decided to replace my Dell printer since it seemed to have more issues than not, as well as the fact that I went through ink (which wasn't cheap) like there was no tomorrow. I researched the web seeking a decent printer for a decent price that would be more economical in terms of ink.
Alas, this printer popped up time and again.
I'm happy it did! This printer has all the bells and whistles, is easy to use, affordable, does a great job whether printing documents or photos, and is much more efficient at its use of ink!

I bought this printer from a local retail store. Due to the cheap price, I assumed that it would have average print quality, etc. You get what you pay for, right?
Wrong!
*The quality of printed photos is amazing, assuming that you are using good quality paper.
*It is easy to setup and operate
*It has a cool little lcd screen that allows you to navigate through the printer settings and even preview pics that you want to print.
*You can plug your camera's memory card directly into the printer for easy access.
*It comes with some cool editing software, etc.
*It just looks so sleek and stylish.
...the list goes on and on. It's a great buy, especially if you get a good price on it. I told my dad about this printer and he wanted to try one out for size. He bought one for himself and uses it at his office. He has not had any problems either.
The other user, who posted a comment, must have gotten a lemon. Either that, or it was some type of user error (no offense intended)

I have had this printer for 3 years now.
PRO's: Well built, lasts long, not suseptible to lightning strikes, does duplex printing flawlwssly, the 5 ink tanks are refillable (a must for me) print speed is fast, text print quality as good as laser, scans to PDF, has OCR function. Magnified copies are nice and are very close to the original in quality, has bottom paper feeder and top load capability. Ink usage is reasonable, prints envelopes well.
CONS: The OCR software is confusing but works, the printhead is not part of the cartridges but rather a tray that inserts into the printer. Eventually, this does have to be replaced and is a good $50.00 - almost half the cost of the printer. Doesn't include fax. When copying, the paper size is always a default of 4 x 6. Since I always copy full page, I have to change this every time - it won't remember the new setting. Photos are not quite colored right - I wouldn't purchase this for a photo printer, but it's a workhorse for everyday documents and decent color graphics.
Conclusion: This printer is worth $129.00 - no question. However, the MP600 which I have at work is only $20.00 more which I'd buy next for home use as a replacement. Print quality is about the same, but the manual copy feature on the printer defaults to 8.5x11, the round wheel scroll control is fast and easy. If the paper door is accidently left closed, it'll drop nice and easy by itself to begin printing but the MP500 won't. I'm sure there are a few other improvements that I haven't noticed, but it still doesn't have fax. Everyone at work loves the sleek look.
