Super Lens.......2007-12-26
It seemed that every picture I wanted to take needed the lens in the bag not the one on the camera. Not any more. This lens covers practically the full range. A fisheye for wider angle might be useful but just move back a foot with this lens. A really long tele lens might be useful but with the VR feature in this lens and the 10.2 mp in the camera just crop to what you want. The only negative is that it is not real pretty when at 200mm (because the extending tube shows). On the other hand at 18mm it is impressive. When the negative is this superficial it shows what the lens is really about. I love it.
Excellent walking around lens.......2007-12-26
I purchased this lens with the Nikon D80 camera body and am finding it to be a very functional lens. I am not a pro and cannot compare it in sharpness to any prime lens, however for a fairly generous zoom 10+ times, and with its vibration reduction, it is a very nice lens.

I shoot a lot of weddings and location portraits. Dragging the shutter (using manual mode with a TTL flash and a slow shutter speed to pick up details in the background) is something that this lens was made for.
For people that don't do this on a regular basis, an on-camera flash will typically give you the "bright people in a dark room" effect. If you prefer to show detail in the background, most photographers will "drag the shutter" - essentially going to manual mode and setting the shutter speed down to 1/15 or slower. The flash quickly lights the subject, then the slow shutter speed pulls in the background light.
Up until now, the problem with this has been that, while the subject is sharp (the flash "freezes" them), the backgrounds get motion blur because of the long handheld exposure time.
This lens, with VR, eliminates the problem. I can manually set my camera at f8 and 1/8 second, and essentially shoot sharp wedding photographs all day long.
Remember, the VR will eliminate YOUR movement- not the subjects. You still need flash to freeze the subject - but the background (usually not moving) greatly benefits from this technology.
In addition, the 18-200 lens allows you to shoot a panoramic of the wedding party, followed by a closeup of the bride, with no lens switching.
Overall, this is a fantastic product.

I am only an amateur photographer, my brother who is professional recommended me to buy this lens. I totally agree with him. With this lens, I don't need another lens anymore. I need lens that can capture animals from far away and this lens can do it easily. Also it's good to take a portrait. And it's able to use with my D40 which can use only some specific lens. Eventhough the price is quite high compare to others, I think it's worth to buy this lens.

This is a great lens. As most other reviews, the lens feels great in your hand and is not too heavy. The VR is really handy in darker images, as it allows for up to 3 fstops (Nikon claims 4, but i haven't really compared). Much better than the 18 - 55 that comes with the kit, although that isn't bad either. This is basically an all in 1 lens w/ tele capabilities, wide lens, vr technology, plus feels very durable. I would definitely recommend this lens to anyone that is interested in Nikkor lenses.

The Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens + Deluxe Accessory Kit w/5 Year Extended Warranty
The product arrived sooner than promised in great shape. I have used the lens to take over 700 pictures on a recent overseas trip and is is all I could ask for. I was able to take clear pictures, even from a moving bus.
A poor case of Mis-representation.......2007-10-10
The product was advertised as a kit based on Nikon lens, and an EXTENDED 5-year warranty. Nikon products for the US market have a 5-year warranty which would mean 10-years of coverage. This lense gets excellent reviews and I would agree with the quality and versatility.
However, the lens shipped is NOT a US market version. As a result it has NO manufacturer warranty. The Extended warranty is then the ONLY warranty. This means you have no support from Nikon, and have to deal with a third-party who, based on my initial contact, does not appear stable.
The listing is thus falsely constructed. The product should state International version, and should state NO manufacturer warranty, and should state third-party warranty only.
As soon as I discovered this I had buyers remorse, but had already disposed of all packing materials. I will not buy from this vendor again and recommend not doing so unless you have clear understanding of the product described.

The D200 with the Nikkor 18-200 VR lens is a rocking state of the art rig and would make any photographer (pro or am) a notch above where they were before they bought this rig. Contrary to what I thought before I bought it, it is actually easier to use than the D100. The only downside is the weight but we all know that it is because this camera is built tough with a steel frame. It also helps with vibration.
If you want professional results, this camera will take you there. I highly recommend getting the biggest memory card and the extra battery since you will find yourself shooting like a madman (or woman) once you start using this camera.
