The world's first integration of retractive lens with folded optics technology allows the zooming to occur horizontally within the camera. This makes it possible to pack a powerful 10x optical zoom (equivalent to a big 35 to 350mm lens on a 35mm camera) into a compact camera. The Extended Optical Zoom function, which magnifies the image with minimal deterioration by using the center part of the high-resolution CCD, boosts the zoom power to a maximum 12.5x2.The Venus Engine III provides a high sensitivity ISO 800 setting that captures images with minimal noise at full resolution. The higher ISO setting lets you use higher shutter speeds to minimize the motion blur that can occur when you're shooting a moving subject, particularly in dim lighting. Even indoors, you can get crisp, clear, beautiful shots of children, pets and other subjects that won't hold still.Choose from several auto focus modes - spot, 1-point (normal or high-speed), 3-point high-speed, and 9-point - to suit the scene you're shooting. The DMC-TZ1 also introduces a new Linear AF system, which has resulted in the achievement of an industry-leading fast auto focusing time. Not only the speed but also the noise of the motor is reduced and even the zooming while recording motion image is possible. Combined with a startup time of merely 0.95 seconds, this fast focusing lets you catch every shooting opportunity. Plus, the AF Assist Lamp helps when focusing in dimly lit places.Thanks to the Venus Engine III, the DMC-TZ1 has a release time lag as low as 0.006 seconds. The DMC-TZ1 can also fire off consecutive shots at a swift 3 frames per second, and offers Unlimited Consecutive Shooting, so you can keep shooting until the SD Memory Card or built-in memory is full.

terrible camera.......2007-12-19
i have owned this camera for over a year, and overall have had a negative experience. daytime photos usually come out ok, but any low light situations are so noisy that they are unusable. even cloudy days make for terrible pictures. they were so bad i thought surely the camera was broken, so i sent it in for repairs. panasonic was good about a timely response, but nothing had changed when it was supposedly "fixed."
the main reason i gave 1 star is because there's no point in having a $250 camera that's only good for some situations. the optical zoom is a nice feature, but no built in lens cap and the hefty weight just for some fuzzy pictures is definitely not worth it.
AVOID - Major Problems with this Camera.......2007-12-15
I have owned this camera for 13 months and recently it began taking terrible photos when using the flash. I did a search online and found out it is a common problem that usually occurs after several months of use. The flash and the shutter get out of sync.
I called Panasonic and they said they knew about the problem, but it was not covered by warranty. They want $180+ for the repair.
DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA! It will work fine at first...and mine still does take awesome day photos....but eventually the flash and shutter will get out of sync and you will be extremely disappointed and unable to use this camera for any indoor photos or other photos that require a flash.
If you don't believe me, Google "Panasonic DMC-TZ1 flash problems" or "Panasonic DMC-TZ1 flash sync problems".

After doing a lot of research on epinions, amazon, and a half dozen digital camera review websites, it sounded like the TZ1 was the perfect camera for my needs. I have been an avid amateur photographer for many years and enjoy using manual as well as automatic point-and-shoot cameras. I was looking for a small camera with a large optical zoom to take with me on hiking and backpacking trips. After purchasing the camera, I noticed right away that the picture was out of focus about 50% of the time in simple mode. I reviewed the manual several times thinking I was doing something incorrectly, however to no avail, as the the focus continued to be unreliable no matter what settings I changed. To me this makes the camera virtually worthless. To add to this however, the camera's white balance sensor is very poor and I found that when taking a picture with anything light in color, the light areas are completely washed out in the picture. I am very disappointed with this camera and regret buying it. It now sits in a drawer in the spare bedroom filing cabinet and I have reverted to using my older Cannon point and shoot because at least I can count on the picture being in focus. Don't waste your money on this product!!!!

After I bought and them charged my card I received an email telling me that the TZ1 was "discontinued" and I could choose another product from ADORAMA (take care with them). After a lot of emails I received my money back.
I really wanted to really review the TZ1 here, but ADORAMA didn't send me camera.
