Impressive.......2007-10-25
I've done my research and to me this was the best deal. When comparing this lens to my old 100 mm from my Pentax K1000 i discovered there wasn't a significant difference at all. Maybe a very small amount of a difference but shouldn't a 100 mm be a little less then 200?? I'm not so sure i trust the rating. Other then that i honestly don't care, its a very pretty lens and i included a couple pics of the lens and one i took using the lens with my Pentax K10D.
A Good Everyday Lens For The Price.......2007-10-19
The Sigma 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 DG IF lens is a low-cost general purpose everyday lens. It functions as an FA-J type autofocus lens on the Pentax cameras. The main differences you'll notice are the lack of a manual aperture ring, and there is no focus-mode switch on the Pentax-mount version of this lens. Both of those functions are to be set from the camera body. The image circle is compatible with both digital and 35mm film cameras. The mount does not have an o-ring, so don't expect this lens to be water-resistant, like the new $1000-and-up Pentax line of "super" lenses. Edge sharpness seems acceptable to my eyes. I noticed no vignetting with this lens. Although this lens is marketed as a "macro" lens, the magnification seems to be about 1:4, similar to what the manufacturer claims, which is not a "true" macro, but will give you some very nice close-ups. The lens feels quite sturdy, and weighs about a pound. The focus ring on this lens does NOT have a "clutch" action, so if you are using this lens on autofocus, please do NOT hold onto the focus ring, or you may cause damage to the mechanism. Also, at the 200mm end of the zoom range, the aperture of 5.6 may result in the lens "hunting" for autofocus in poor lighting conditions. In that case, simply switch to manual focus. Everything felt tight and smooth on this lens, but Sigma provided a zoom lock to prevent "lens creep".
Overall, for the price, I'd say this lens performs to my satisfaction. I did not notice any edge softess or color fringes when I used the lens on my K100D. It's not as smooth or quiet as the new "super" line of lenses from Pentax, but it costs only a fraction of the price of those lenses. As I said, it's a good everyday lens.
I would buy this Sigma lens again.

With the 28-300 lense over 300.00 this was a terrific bargain at less than half. Pictures taken so far have been outstanding (f8). Particularly like the zoom-lock. Also arrived in excellent condition as advertised. No problem from Cameta.

sigma lens for sony.......2007-02-24
Great lens. Its metal body feels solid, unlike the ones the come with my camera which is made of plastic & feels like a toy. The pictures I took was clearer than the sony lens. The drawback is that it's on the heavy side & the auto focus mechanism is a little slower the the plastic one. All in all, you not only get your money's worth but you get more for your money.

I like it - but don't love it.......2007-11-22
I completely agree with the last review I read on this lens. It has left me thinking that I need to see an eye doctor. I mean, can so many of my images be coming out this blurry??? I'm looking for a second and better lens as this one just isn't cutting it.

I'm trying really really hard to love this lens but I think I can only like it a lot.
What's good?
- It's a GREAT looking lens.
- Comes with a petal hood.
- Very solidly built.
- Has a very decent zoom range.
- Makes a very good walk around lens.
- Very decent price.
What's not so good?
- The images that come from this lens are a bit soft at the high end of the zoom range.
- Ok...maybe a lot soft.
- Okaaaaaaay...a little blurry.
- Okay...maybe JUST blurry but maybe it's the cheap UV filter I put on it, but it didn't really seem to improve much when I took it of, so maybe I shook, or heat and humidity between myself and the target blurred things a little? Maybe?
See how much I try to like this lens?
Am I happy with it? Yeah, I guess.
Would I buy this same lens again? Probably not.
The Sigma 70-300 (140 bucks) was MUCH sharper at 200mm than this lens.
For 100 bucks more you can get the Sigma 18-200mm which is a great range, but I'd still be leery given my experience with this lens.
I'm sorry Sigma, I've TRIED to love you! But we can still be friends.

The Sigma 28-200mm zoom macro is an excellent lens for the typical portrait or landscape photo. I was a bit disappointed in the macro feature for a couple of reasons. While I realize that no telephoto lens can really take "macro" images, I was used to the 28-135mm Sigma macro that I have for my SLR film camera. A friend does have a 28-135mm for his Nikon digital SLR, so I was hoping to get one. That lens has a macro switch and a image ratio of 1:2. Unfortunately, Sigma no longer makes the 28-135mm lens, at least not for digital cameras. So I selected the 28-200mm macro with an image ratio of 1:3.8 and no macro switch. With my old 28-135, I could use one lens for just about all my photos; I will not be able to do that with the 28-200. Even with these exceptions, however, I do find the 28-200 lens to have very good optics and flexibility.
