The Sigma APO 50-500mm f4-6.3 EX DG HSM Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras is a high-magnification zoom lens with a 10x zoom ratio. The advanced optical design of the lens is optimized for digital SLR cameras, and the super coating on each glass surface produces superb color rendition, while reducing flare and ghosting. This lens uses four pieces of Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass for excellent correction of color aberration throughout the entire zoom range. The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) provides quiet high-speed AF function, as well as full-time manual focus capability. This lens also features a Zoom Lock device to eliminate "zoom creep" when the lens is tilted down. When the lens is set to the 50 millimeter focal length, it is remarkably compact and provides easy handling. The tripod mount is composed of magnesium, to minimize total weight. It is also easy to grip and carry the lens due to ergonomic design of the tripod mount. Non-rotating front lens elements, due to the rear focus mechanism, make possible the use of a custom bayonet "petal-type hood," which prevents extraneous light from degrading the image quality. This mechanism also allows the use of circular polarizing filters, since the front barrel does not rotate during focusing or zooming.

Great intermediate lens.......2007-12-16
This is the lens that is on my camera (Cannon Rebel XTI) the most. It is very versatile. I am still a beginner, but a serious one, and the range it has is very useful. I shoot a lot of wildlife and it is great. It is very heavy so you need a sturdy tripod, although, you can hand-hold this camera, even at the 500 range, in good light and get great shots. One big problem with the lens is it gets a lot of dust on the inside on the internal lens. I have to go get it cleaned every now and then. I am too nervous to take it apart myself. I have had this lens one year and love it very much. It has even taken a couple of spills and still works great.

This lens needs a lot of light and I have not had an oppurtunity to shoot it with the ideal light. I want to give it a 4, but I need more time.. I dont think it will be a five... This is a big lens and I have not had much luck hand holding it.. You need a tripod or monopod for sure.. I found the images very soft, but I have seen more experiencef shooters get great photos with some help from photoshop... For the price you can't do much better... I found it useful at f8-f1l at an ISO of 400.. So there is some noise, which can be fixed in photoshop.. I will update this review once I get some light.. so take this with a grain of salt..
The bag it came with could have been a little longer so I dont have to take off the hood..
Keep in mind I am amateur... I am sure with time.. this will be my 3rd favorite lens in my bag...

Actually, I'm pretty impressed with this lens, considering the price. It's REALLY heavy for me though, had to upgrade my tripod!

I have used this lens about three years now. I have a Canon 20D and a Canon 1D Mark II. I use a Bogen 3120 tripod with a Wimberly II head. I have handheld this monster lens quite often. Without image stability, you have to be in the shutter speed range 1/1000" (no slower). Combine this with high ISO and you are always on the verge of bad noise in your image. That is why I prefer a tripod and remote shutter release. Then you will have few problems. The autofocus is slow on both cameras. Though with the Wimberly II head, panning and following birds while continuously shooting usually results in a few good images. This lens cannot compare to the Canon 500/4 which to me is the 5-star winner, though at 5 times the price. But it is the old adage, good optics cost good money. No such thing as a good optical system that is inexpensive. But this Sigma lens is a good stop-gap until you can afford the best.

This has been my primary lens for all of my aviation photography and has never let me down! I have photographs that I've taken as slow as 1/40 at the 500mm end without the use of any tripod/monopod with fantastic results! The lens obviously comes in at 8 pounds and in my opinion really helps with panning. The real reason for purshasing this lens is its incredible zoom range. At airshows I keep it in the 300-500mm end of the lens most of the time but there have been many times I had to quickly zoom to the 50mm end to frame that "perfect" shot to include an aircraft taxiing right in front of me along with the other aircraft still in the air. I also shoot at a local airport for my clients and not having to quickly change lenses/bodies continually makes this lens well worth its weight in gold!
the only issue I've had with this lens is when I'm shooting in windy conditions. That long lens acts like a sail and can really be a problem when shooting a slow/stationary object.

Unique among its peers.......2007-09-22
Last summer I borrowed the SIGMA 50-500 for a week while I was vacationing with the most wonderful woman in the world. We spent the week in a small rustic cabin on Seventh Lake in the central Adirondacks. I had a great time shooting with the lens, but frankly, I was not careful enough at that time to make the sort of outstanding images of which this lens is capable.
I tried snapping things in a hurry and on dark rainy days. The SIGMA 50-500 isn't really designed for that sort of low light grab work. Since then I've learned a lot about light, shutter speed, the relative stability of tripods, and what one should expect from a 500mm telephoto lens. Now I am taking the sort of images this unique lens is meant for.
The SIGMA 50-500 EX DG HSM APO is a very unique lens. Back in the day, the manufacturing process didn't allow vendors to make lenses like this with good optical properties. These days, they practically do miracles by the old standards. This lens isn't something you see around every day-yet at least-but it takes great pictures.
At a little over four pounds, it's very light as 500mm lenses go. Vibration reduction (Image Stabilization for Canon fans) would be a great benefit, but for the price, you just can't come close to the performance of this lens anywhere else. It comes with a carrying and storage bag, but you can't have a body attached while it's in the bag. On the other hand, this lens can be carried with a body attached without too much effort. I wouldn't want to hike with it, but it's OK for half-day birding trips and things like that.

I have had this lens for over 5 years and used it on 3 different camera's and would feel lost without it. As far a I'm concerned for the money this is the best lens of this type out their. Ive used this lens for shooting Air Shows and Motorcycle Races and have never lost a shot be cause of the focus speed and would match image quality with just about any lens out their. At the time I am using it on a Canon 20D and would recommend it to any one looking for a large zoom lens.

AF was extremely slow, even in good light. I tested it against another Sigma lens, non-HSM, with similar minimum aperture. The motor sounded underpowered, even with a freshly charged battery in the D70s.
Shots were sharp and nicely contrasty, when I used manual focus.

do a little research and don't be fooled. Sigmas are generally a hit or miss thing for the lens quality. And worse off if you travel with the camera..seals are not at all reliable. Last but not least go ito a store and compare the drive noise on this unit to any other brand...very very noise...sorry i can not recommend them. Nikon, Tamron, Tokina...I personally prefer Nikon and Tokina...good luck

Couldn't ask for more!! Excellent lens!!.......2007-10-03
I own the Olympus 35mm Macro lens and the Leica D 14-50mm Standard Zoom lens, so I needed something with more zoom capabilities. I searched for all the telephoto lenses available for the Four Thirds Mount System, but either too expensive, or not they don't come with a high zooming range. Then I saw the Sigma 50-500mm Telephoto lens, and thought that with that price tag, this would be like a dream come true. I had to wait about 4-5 months for this lens to be available on line (but it was worth waiting for), and as soon as I found out it was on sale I ordered one.
Assembly: The lens is very sturdy and all the parts are well assembled. You won't see any loose parts. And its a perfect fit for my camera, Panasonic DMC-L1K. Afterall, it's 'Made In Japan'.
Materials: High Quality matt, yet metallic feel. High quality rubber zooming and focusing collars.
Focusing: Auto focus could take some time if you're shooting a scene with lots of objects. And when the zoom is at it's maximum, it would be quite a challenge to focus on your subject, so it's highly recommended to use a tripod. Manual focus works perfectly, although a tripod is highly recommended, not only to steady the camera, but also due the lens' own weight.
Image Quality: I've used this lense for about 1 month, so far excellent image quality (colours, sharpness, etc.)
Weight: This could be an issue for this lens, because weighing about 6 pounds, you could get tired of holding the camera for a long time, resulting in a shaky and blurry images. So tripods are recommended.
Price: Excellent price for this type of lens. Most telephoto lenses with the same range cost about $2000 and over.
Overall: Excellent lens for any photographer. A valuable asset for any photographer's gear.

This lens is fantastic. I photograph a lot of wildlife and this lens allows me to get the close up shot without getting so close that the animal is spooked by my presence.

Wonderful lens. A little too heavy........2007-03-08
This is a very good lens. Very sharp pictures and excellent zoom range. However, the lens is quit heavy so u probly need a tripod most of the time. Although it can be used as a 50mm lens I doubt anyone will carry it for that purpose. On the other hand it is nice to have that zoom range if ur on a safari so u dont have to change lenses to shoot something close. I will mainly use this for wild life photography and this an excellent lens for that purpose for the money I can spend.

I've used this lens with great success with both my 7D and my a100 - but if you don't need the range, this lens isn't for you. It's heavy, it zooms sluggishly, and it doesn't have HSM since Sigma never made an HSM version of this lens for the Sony/Minolta family, contrary to the listing.
But if you DO need the range, this lens is capable of taking professional grade photos all the way to 500mm (use a tripod!) Besides the awesome range, it has excellent build quality. It feels solid in your hands, and can take a beating. It has great bokeh, color/contrast, and sharpness (in daylight, of course.) The size actually helps with keeping the camera still while shooting without the tripod, coupled with the super steadyshot of the a100 this lens can be used handheld in daylight.
It's slow, but perfectly capable in broad daylight. If you plan to stick to focal lengths of below 200mm, go with a smaller, more portable lens.
