Lightweight and good with eyeglasses.......2007-04-25

that they were highly rated with or without eyeglasses. The Clestron's did not disappoint me. No more need to remove glasses to use binoculars. They have excellent optics, and are lightweight yet sturdy and waterproof. They survived my Alaskan backpacking trek in the Brooks Range and provided excellent views of grizzly bears, caribou, dall sheep and birds. I avoided losing the end covers by leaving them home. The eyepiece cover attaches to the neck strap so I took that.
Fantastic binoculars.......2005-09-11
These Binoculars seem well made and definately have quality optics. The image is bright, color accurate, and contrast superb. Even at dusk they pick up enough light for birdwatching. At night, craters on the moon are beautiful to behold. I love using the unusually close focus of 5 feet to examine insects like I had never seen them before. As an added bonus (and remarkable at this price) they are said to be waterproof (I assume they are but have not tested). These are easy and comfortable to handle and focus. Lastly, they work very well (and better than many others) with eyeglasses on. The lens caps/cups fit extremely well on the back and decent on the front. My only wish to improve these binocs is that the lens covers secured better to the binoculars to ensure they are not lost. I had bought simils Pentax binocs first but returned mostly because they worked poorly with eyeglasses on. These are cheaper and equal to better than the Pentax feature for feature. Lastly, these come with a lifetime nofault warranty.

Not perfect, but a great value.......2007-11-29
I bought these binoculars 4 1/2 years ago because they seemed like a good value for the money. I can definitely confirm that. The image is quite clear and very wide. 8x is a satisfying magnification for sports, birdwatching, sight-seeing and astronomy. Too much more and you really need either a tripod or image stabilization. Compared to cheaper lenses, these are noticeably better and compared to more expensive pairs from Nikon not any worse.
Now there are some problems that I had. They are deceptively heavy for their size. The original strap hurt my neck so I bought a padded strap that worked better. The case has a strap too, but I couldn't replace or remove that one since it was sewn not clipped to the case. Canon really should provide caps for the objective lens. It was annoying to roll the rubber eyepieces down to use them with sunglasses during the day.
Expect for the weight, I think the other problems are fixable. I suspect these are heavy because of the glass needed produce an excellent image in a very compact pair of binoculars. Also, the waterproofing and rubber armor that protect them add to their heft. I don't think I'd want to compromise any of the other qualities of these binoculars for the sake of a few ounces.

Great low - light viewing. I'm getting these for the boat, and their smaller size is a plus. They're about 3/4 size. Kids can handle them well. A bit heavier than I expected, but solid. I highly recommend them.

The above review is actually ABSOLUTELY INCORRECT! Ranger Platiunum Class binoculars are NOT made by Celestron. They are made by Eagle Optics independently. Call them and ask! :-)
Best waterproof binocular in price range.......2003-01-08
These are a great value with good eye relief (18 mm, important for use with glasses), easy to hold and focus, good sized exit pupil (8/32 = 4 mm), wide field of view (395'), and not too heavy (26 oz.) A large exit pupil is important on a moving boat; it's easier to keep the image in view. They appear to be rugged; I and several other people used several pairs of these for several years, and none of them went out of alignment.
Minuses are:
(1) they do not focus close (minimum 19 feet), which is a major drawback for bird and butterfly watching but fine for boating,
(2) the optics are not phase corrected so images are a bit soft,
(3) the eyecups on the ones I used roll up and down which is tedious if you often switch between use with glasses and without, and may eventually cause the rubber to crack. However, the photos of the newer models suggest they now have rigid eyecups that pull or twist up or down, which are much better.
Birders and other serious users should look at slightly more expensive waterproof roof prism models that all focus closer (5-6'), are phase corrected, have a bit more light and larger exit pupil (5 mm), and have eyecups that click up & down: the Celestron Regal LS 8x42 or Eagle Optics Ranger Platinum 8x42 (both made by Celestron) or the new Nikon ATB 8x42. All cost between $300-$400 at discount and weigh about the same as the Canon 8x32. I own the Celestrons and they are great. There is also a Pentax 8x42 DCF waterproof with similar specifications but it costs a bit more.
Good optics for the price.......2002-04-24
I compared this model in a sporting goods store to similar sized $500-1000 models from well known binoc. makers and to some other moderately priced units in the $100-250 range. I thought it outdid the other moderate units in handling and image quality and came pretty close to several of the high end models. For our limited uses this product is excellent. Canon is well known in camera optics but has not been well known in the binocular market and this non IS model is their way of breaking into the market. I use a Zeiss microscope everyday and appreciate good optics.

Safari Binoculars.......2007-03-16
I was looking for binoculars that I could use for birding and to take on safari in Africa. These binoculars are light enough and their field of vision is great. They work wonderfully during low light which will be great in Africa since we are out early in the morning and late in the evening. I have used them for birding already and I cannot wait to use them in Africa.

These are by far the best pair of binoculars I have ever owned. If you are looking for optics but can't imagine spending this kind of money, don't imagine just do it. Overall the fit and feel of these is great. The rubber coating is thick and uniform, the eyepieces are comfortable and optics themselves are breathtaking.
