I bought this lens to shoot pictures of my son's football games. It has been fantastic and very clear. Lens creep is an issue but not one that has really bothered me. The price on Amazon was great as I had priced it in NYC and most retailers wanted twice as much if not more.
A great lens for the price........2007-07-10
This is an extremely versatile lens capable of handling many different shooting situations. I have been using this lens for a couple years now and my only complaint is that there is no zoom lock so in between shots where the lens is pointed up at a fairly steep angle you will need to make sure that the zoom is still in it's intended position. I'ts not exactly a walk around lens because of it's size and weight. It is a good lens to have for shooting wild life or taking photos of the moon. I compared it to the Tokina 400mm lens. This lens was far superior to the Tokina. and as good as the Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM Super Telephoto Lens. The only advantage is that the Canon had zoom lock.
This lens takes amazing photos. I am very happy with the quality of photos that I get, great color, sharpness and contrast. It comes with a tripod coller, a great carrying case and a hood.

Great Performer.......2007-03-13
I own two lenses from Sigma, and I love them both. This ultra telephoto lens is possibly the best bang for your buck in the focal its focal range. If there is a better one in its class I've yet to see it. Manual Focus ring is well placed, easy access, we all like that, right? Sharpness has not been an issue for me at all; you will need a tripod in most situation, but you should be using one all the time, shame on you if you don't! jk, The only gripe I have with this lens is that it does not feature a "zoom lock" as this is a fairly heavy lens, creep can be an issue if you are carrying it around and not shoot. I highly recommend this lens. 5 stars no questions asked.
Can't afford the Bigma? Buy this!.......2006-08-03
Much has been written praising the Sigma 50-300 lens, often called the "Bigma." This lens is clearly its equal in everything but zoom range. I was very surprised when I purchased mine, used, and discovered that its sharpness was much better than I expected, and its autofocus speed every bit fast enough for challenging subjects like sports. The price I paid for this under-rated lens was about a third the price of a new Bigma, so I am extremely pleased with the bargain I got.
My only beef with this lens is the "zoom creep" that results when you tilt the camera/lens downwards. The smooth zooming action apparently results in zooming even when you don't want it to.
If you need a 500mm top end, and can live with a 170mm minimum zoom, this lens may be what you need. In my case, the 50mm short end of the Bigma wasn't wide enough, so I am happier with my 170mm-500mm zoom and a companion 18mm-200mm lens that together cover the full range I need.
This lens is available in a variety of mounts, including the Canon mount listed here, as well as fittings for Minolta and Nikon (my own choice.)
Excellent Tele Zoom for the money.......2006-04-14
After reading many mixed reviews on the web, I wasn't too sure about the picture quality when I received it. But it turns out to be an excellent big zoom for the money. I have no other 500mm lenses for comparison. But the pictures I took in dark night outdoor (tripod) and some indoor shots (hand held with flash) on Canon Rebel XT turned out to be really sharp, comparing to shots I took with Canon 50mm/f1.4, Sigma 10-20mm, or Canon 70-200L/f4 under very similar conditions. Color is balanced and contrasty and details are superb! The weight is very reasonable. The collar is excellent. The AF works beautifully indoor in regular household light. Very fast and quiet, unlike anything I've read on the web ("noisy, slow, hunting"). In fact, my other two above mentioned Canon lenses seem to hunt more sometimes under the similar condition. This lens doesn't have zoom lock, so it does creep if not careful. But for about $500 less than the Bigma and tons less than similar Canon's, it's a very small price to pay indeed. The focus ring is kinda loose, but so is the Canon 50/f1.4. My Canon L and Sigma EX don't have this problem. You get what you paid for. The lens hood feels plastic, but reasonable. The collar is very solid and smooth. The carrying bag that comes with the lens is of reasonable quality but looks like it's not for serious outdoor abuse. As a amateur enthusiast, I am totally happy with it. 5 stars for the value/price ratio. I am waiting for my $80 Quantaray 2x Teleconverter to arrive to try it on this Sigma. Maybe this time I am really pushing my luck :) If you are on a budget and looking for a 500mm, This Sigma definitely worthes a closer look. Highly recommended.

I've been using this lens for little less than a year now. I still stand by my words above. Only the 2x converter is really pushing it - killed the AF and got a big drop in sharpness. Happy shooting!

This lens is one of the best kept secrets on the market. Best long-reach optics at this price point (i.e. less than $4000) period. I researched this glass at great length before purchasing. My best bear shots were all taken with this lens. Fantastic!!
Fantastic lens for your Nikon.......2007-08-25
I bought this lens from Wall St. Photo 2 weeks ago. I've take some pictures of MT. Shasta from 15 miles away. I of course used my tripod at full 500mm, The pictures had great resoultion and color saturation (no filters). I'm rreally anxious to explore the full capabilities of this piece of glass.
Mt. Shasta is 14,500 ft. The picture had such good resoultion that it made you feel that you were climbing the mountain. Every little boulder was crystal sharp. The lens was a little when AF. But it didn't bother me. The lens comes with a collar for tripod use. A nice lens pouch and a sun shade. On the J&B website it says discontinued. I don't beleive this. Your getting a whole lot for your money. I paid bottom line $650.
I don't know where you could match this lens capabilities with the price.
oH, Wall St. gave me a free 5 Yr. protection plan for free. I didn't even ask for it. I checked with Sigma to make sure this wasn't Grey Market. Sigma with the serial # assured me it was a US lens. The only complaint I have with Wall ST is their packing. Abosolutely not acceptable. Just a little bit of popcorn on the bottom. When I received the lens I thought it was used because of the condition of the box. I verified this was a NEW lens.
If you can find one of these lens get it you won't be dissapointed. It's a real bargain.

The lens is kind of soft, AF noisy and kind of slow. But with that price, I don't think you can find another 500mm lens that fit my D80.

do a little research and don't be fooled. Sigmas are generally a hit or miss thing for the lens quality. And worse off if you travel with the camera..seals are not at all reliable. Last but not least go ito a store and compare the drive noise on this unit to any other brand...very very noise...sorry i can not recommend them. Nikon, Tamron, Tokina...I personally prefer Nikon and Tokina...good luck

problems with lens.......2005-12-21
For the money u really can not complain. But I use pro lens like the L series and they make it look silly to be honest. First is it isnt an internal zoom which introduces technical problems, while shooting etc. And the lens slides down when held on the camera unsupported, i am hoping this can be fixed because it is impossible to walk around with if it keeps sliding out. next thing is the noise. If you dont use canon lens then it is normal but i got so use to the absolute silence of focusing. You better not plan to do any sensitive wild life with this. But for the price and the 500 zoom (why i got it) its cool. My 70-210 canon is perfect but on some occasions you need that 500 and no way would i go and pay for even a 300 canon zoom so.. plus when u stick this daddy on your camera you look well pro, ull have no probs convincing the sisters that you are for real lol.

Good lens but a few problems.......2001-12-25
Received lens as a gift, was thinking of buying myself. Was impressed with the looks of this monster,looks very expensive to unfamiliar folks. I use this lens on my Canon Elan 7e and from the start had a problem that I wasnt informed of when bought by friend. Problem was that certain Sigma lenses don't work properly with the new Canon camera. After some research, i found I had to ship my lens to New York Sigma factory for a free upgrade, A+. received lens in a few weeks and problem was solved. Other problem was the tripod collar is in bad spot for use with some Bogan tripod heads. the head must be used sidewards to be used with the lens. Not a big problem but a problem. Next problem is that when carrying camera with lens attached and pointing downward, the lens slides to the fully extended position and could get damaged by banging into things when not noticed right away. Other than that I like the lens. Its definitely not a pro lens but it will serve the advanced amateur well.
reasonably priced, sharp and clear.......2001-05-10
This is a moderately priced alternative telephoto lens. Althought quite bulky, lens are not heavy, and they fit perfectly well in my LowePro Min-Trekker backpack.
Lens are not fast enought to take pictures without a tripod in less then bright light conditions, however, if you can afford a longer exposure times and tripod, you can get good results. Not suited for sports or fast animal photography, but if you want zoom into the landscape, architecture or people, here is a perfectly fine lens...There is really no good alternative lens if you need a range of 170-500 mm.
