This UV Filter blocks the invisible UV component of light from the sky, which can cause blur and to which many color films react with a blue cast. UV Filters are ideal for photography in high altitudes (in the mountains), by the sea and in regions with very clean air. The pictures gain brilliance and disturbing blue casts are avoided. Because the glass is colorless, color rendition is not altered, aside from the elimination of the unwanted blue cast, and no increase in exposure is required. That makes a UV Filter very suitable as protection of the front element of the taking lens against dust, flying sand, sea water spray and the like, and it can be kept on the lens at all times. It is recommended for analog color and black-and-white as well as digital photography.

B+W UV-Haze 1X MRC filter.......2007-12-25
Purchased the 58mm version of this to protect the lens on a Cannon S5 IS (I am of the old school of protecting lenses). The construction is as solid as a rock and the filter element is crystal clear. I went with the B&W because of the brass outer ring. This filter will mate to an aluminum Lensmate adapter (highly recommended). Aluminum to aluminum can seize. Aluminum to plastic will bind (under certain conditions) but brass does not have that interactive problem under normal (non-maritime) conditions. Therefore, this filter can buffer between the Lensmate adapter and anything I want to screw into the female threads of this filter. Brass and B+W are a good thing (so Martha would say).

Top quality filter.......2007-08-29
I bought this filter for my Canon 50mm f/1.4. The 50mm lens consistently gives me my top images so I wanted a good quality filter for it. My main goal here is protection of my lens, but at the same time I wanted something that didn't degrade my images. I usually get lower quality filters but this time decided to splurg for the expensive one.
My first impression was that this thing actually has some weight to it. It feels like you're actually getting something. When you pick it up, you can really notice a difference in lower quality filters (I usually bought Hoya or something from Best Buy in the past). This is well built.
Second impression is that this filter is *crystal* clear. My other filters are not as noticeably clear as this.
Now, when I have taken photos with this, I have still gotten the nice crisp clear shots I normally got with my 50mm. So it's protecting the lens and keeping my shots clear--exactly what I want from it. You may get exactly the same with a cheaper filter, I didn't try anything else. All I can tell you is that this filter delivered.
Also, I don't think I saw it listed in the specs, but this is the MRC model (meaning Pro grade).

This filter is a bit expensive, but worth every penny. I purchased this filter for the Canon 50mm f1.4 lense on my Rebel XT. It creates wonderful dark blue skys. I uploaded two sample images as examples.

Ultraviolet light is invisible to the eye and is strong in mountainous and coastal areas with very clear air. It is a known cosmetic side effect (artifact) of the high performance polarizing foils that Schneider/B+W uses in its True-Pols to produce a "ripple reflection" to the human eye when viewing high intensity reflected light that "bounces" off the actual polarizing foil. This is simply a "reflected artifact" and is not transmitted through the lens.
This effect is apparent when viewing the filter under certain specific lighting conditions (such as a bright table light being reflected off the polarizing foil's surface from 45 degrees behind the viewer). It appears as a slight visual "rippling" appearance in the virtual surface of the foil. You cannot see this effect under any other viewing conditions. It is an artifact from a reflection coming from the polarizing film.
flawed filter, flawed shipping/return policy.......2006-08-19
When I took the filter out of the box and held it up to the light, I thought it was scratched, but there was a "fold" or flaw in the glass of the filter, a little more than half an inch long. I returned it for a refund. The original shipping was $7.95. The return shipping was $5.81. Had I bought it straight from Adorama, their shipping would have been $5.00. I'm out $13.76 for shipping on a defective product from a company that has a return policy stating, "Please wait 8 days from date we received the package for us to process your return." Also, I question the legality of Amazon's practice of charging credit cards for third-party items when they're ordered and not waiting until they're shipped. The moral? Never buy a third-party item from Amazon.
