Excellent Entry Level SLR.......2007-12-28
I bought this as a gift for my brother in law.
He seems to be very happy with it. This price was excellent considering these things used to cost almost $1000.
The MegaPixels are not great by today's standards but the truth of the matter is that unless you're making posters with your shots it doesn't really matter.
DX 40 NIKON.......2007-12-28
This camera is all what it was rated in Consuner Guide Magazine, brillant, colorful and bright pictures and ease of use, this being my 1ST SLR camera. Was rated the BEST BUY for the money and picture taking was awesome.
Nikon D40 as a replacement for the F3.......2007-12-28
Nikon D40 6.1MP Digital SLR Camera Kit with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens
I have used the venerable Nikon F3 for 20 years and have always loved it's quality and usefulness. The image quality in particular is top notch.
I have a number of lenses for special projects and they are all like the F3, top quality, rugged and straightforward to use.
Entering the digital age, I looked for the same quality, and being able to use my lens collection on a digital was a huge bonus. The D40 fits the bill. I get the same image quality, and the ease of use is amazing. Even though the camera has over 300 combinations of settings, they are easy to understand. Plus, the preset combinations on the setup dial are well organized and do exactly what you would expect.
This is a great camera at a great price. Plus, it is nice and light.
Cost efficient camera, good for advanced amatures also.......2007-12-28
I have been shooting as an amature for about 15 years, and this is my first digital SLR.
My main comment is that this is plenty of camera for even advanced amatures, and the price should not turn you off. True, it lacks DoF, a focus screw for non-AFS lenses, and sometimes access to needed functions is a bit unwieldy.
However, the bottom line image quality is superb. Get the D40 and invest in another lens.
Problem with the power switch .......2007-12-27
Got this camera kit from Amazon after reading reviews from a whole bunch of places about this camera. However the power switch was faulty. To switch on the camera I had to open and close the battery compartment every time while keeping the switch in ON position. The switch never worked. So sent it back. The return process was easy though, and I got my money back withing a week.
Now I have ordered a Pentax K10D. Hope it will work fine.

Pretty Good!.......2007-12-28
This is a pretty good camera.... very easy to use, small and easy to handle. Nice picture quality, but zoom feature isn't great. I would certainly recommend this camera for the price!
Cheap camera, you get what you paid for.......2007-12-27
I've had this camera for about 6 months now, and I am about to abandon it for a Canon Rebel XT. The Nikon Coolpix L11 is a nice camera and it takes decent pictures, but it has terrible loading and booting up issues. When you take a picture with the flash it takes nearly 4-7 seconds for you to take another. I would not recommend this camera if you are into action shots.
A great camera for under a hundred!.......2007-12-27
For under a hundred bucks this camera is one of the finest out there! The features on it are outstanding, the quality and detail of the photo's are amazing. I'd recommend this to anyone in the market for a well priced camera!
Nice camera....Best for its price.......2007-12-24
This camera is the best for its price....it works well most of the time but goes a little shaky in the dark or low light.
nikon coolpix l11.......2007-12-21
i love this little camera. i'm not a professional photographer, all i need is a little camera that points and shoots and this camera does just that. it doesn't have too many fancy features, but i wouldn't understand how to use them anyway. if you are looking for a decent camera that takes decent pictures for a reasonable price look no further!

This camera distorts images, almost like looking through a fisheye lense. It is going back.
GREAT choice for an Easy Camera for your pocket or purse.......2007-12-23
I have always wanted a Nikon from my very 1st SLR in the 70's but could never afford one. My Minolta DiMage X20 dies recently and I needed to replace it for general photos (always carry a compact camera in my purse). I went searching and found this one would fit in my budget and have features I couldn't get anywhere else. I have not been a minute sorry and it's capibilities are far beyond what my other compact would do. The VR image stabilization minimizing the effect of camera shake is worth the price alone since my hands are not as stead as they once were. Read the details of the features and understand they are as described. You'll be happy you made this choice, even the panoramic mode is very cool and so easy to use.
Nikon Coolpix S51 Digital Camera.......2007-12-17
Reputable manufacturer. Quality product. Large viweing screen. Numerous options for creating photos under a wide range of situations.
Great pictures, but S.......................L.......................O........................W.......2007-12-12
The pictures I took with this camera were all beautiful. There's no question - it is a very intelligent camera. I didn't get one shot that was blurred, overexposed or dark. The two complaints I have with it are how slow it is and that I got a LOT of "orbs" in my pictures. This camera works so hard and performs so many calculations that it is impossible to "capture a moment." By the time the camera is ready to shoot, the moment is gone. I'm not sure what to say about the orbs other than that they were there. I ended up returning it because I just couldn't deal with how slow it was.
Read the manual people!.......2007-12-08
I keep seeing all of these review with silly problems, just read the manual! If it seems slow to take pics, change the shutter speed to the higher/faster speeds and the camera will keep up with your multi fast action photos, no delay as described by others. The power button is just like the one on the L series, although easy to turn on, the camera has an automatic sleep mode before it actually turns off. I love this camera, and when in high resolution photo mode, the display is vivid and quite clear, unlike the grainy lo res pics show on it. I give it a 5+ for outstanding ease and wonderful functions.

Customer Reviews:
Best digital camera, replaced my film Nikon SLR!.......2007-12-28
I have finally found a camera to replace my Nikon AF 35mm film camera. Over the last 10 years I have owned many digital cameras, mostly point a shoots, and this camera blows them all away. Other than the dynamic range of film (latitude, or contrast range), it may actually take better pictures than my SLR film camera. At 100iso I could see no digital noise, and details are razor sharp, so maybe no noise reduction/line enhancement is being used either. I just shot 100 pictures, and the battery isn't even showing any discharge. The camera is lighting fast! No waiting for the camera to boot up (turn on). You pick it up turn it on take a picture. It has just about every feature you could want in a digital camera except movies, but no SLR can take movies yet. Also would be nice if it had HDMI for digital TVs as Nikons higher end cam does. The camera is light weight, yet feels high quality. Controls are easy to use, and the viewfinder shows status of everything. The camera focuses very fast, faster than any other camera I have owned, and it's quiet. The only noise this cam makes is the mirror flipping up, and even that is quiet. The camera can haul off 3 10.2MP pictures per second! This is nothing short of amazing.
Before I purchased this Nikon D40x, I did weeks of research, looked at canon, sony, and panasonic, and really this is the camera to have. I even had the budget to buy the Nikon d3000 for $2000.00, but really this camera does what I need. Sure it's limited to only new lens, but if you don't have a bunch of old lens that need a motor drive, buy this camera.
Nikon, you did a great job!
Nikon D40x.......2007-12-28
Well i read there are alot of menus on this camera but it takes really high quality pictures. Well i had to learn how to use the menus which took several days. I had a hard time figuring out how to use the remote control that i also bought. The remotoe control can only be used when in the remote control shooting mode. I noticed that on the D80 you can just press and shoot. This is alot easier but i dont do alot of personal portraits. The resolution on this camera is fantastic and the lens is very good. The picture quality is really very high quality. The reviews here by others help me select this camera. The reviews helped me choose this camera. I consider this a high end consumer camera but not a professional camera since there is no depth of field feature and other features are buried in menus. I think the intent was consumers will want to point and shoot but if you want to get into being more creative you can do that by getting into the menus. I thought after awhile i could memorize the menuing system and find things pretty well. Summary: I am pleased with the camera. I think once people figure out how to use it and the limitations and features they will be happy with the purchase. I am still learning about features beyond point and shoot and enjoying the experience.
Andrew
Light and easy to use........2007-12-28
After extensive research, I finally purchased Nikon D40x instead of Canon Rebel XTi. Nikon D40x is light and easy to use. The picture is excellent.
A great DSLR for the price.......2007-12-24
I purchased one of these about a month ago along with a 55-200mm second lens. I started my photography hobby "back in the day" of developing my own film, doing my own color and B&W prints, etc. and loved my old film-based Nikon and RIcoh cameras. But as my life got busier with family etc I let that hobby go. But with the advent of digital cameras with good quality and good apps for computer editing I got back into. At first with the lower end cameras like a Canon G2 and Powershot models. They were convenient but photo quality wasn't that good and they struggled with many tougher situations. Plus my hold SLR hobbiest self objected to the lack of creative control. With the newer DSLRs that are available around $600 I took another look and felt the features and quality were ready for purchase decision. After comparing with the XTi from Canon I selected the Nikon because I found it's features easier to use and comprehensive. And most important the quality of the images is superior to the Canon. Canon's consumer lenses just aren't very good (at least not compared to Nikon). While I see some people are dinging this camera for sports I've had good luck using it for action shots. Unless you are considering buying a lens above 300mm I don't think the lack of in-body AF is going to be much of a real concern. Now, on to the best feature. In my tests the Nikon absolutely smokes in the Canon in start up time. With the Nikon, you can take a picture IMMEDIATELY after turning the D40x on. This is a huge feature for me and one of the reasons I wanted a DSLR. Also, the multishot mode works very well in capturing action. I'm really happy with this camera for the price!
Terrific camera.......2007-12-24
I don't usually write reviews but this camera is terrific. Easy to use for a non-professional, great pictures, long battery life between charges, and no noticeable lag time between shots.

Great features.......2007-12-04
The best thing about this camera is its video capabilities. Full screen, 640x480 video with good color and low light performance. You MUST add at least a 2gb card to take advantage of the video options.

Customer Reviews:
Good camera, but don't expect too much.......2007-12-24
I bought the Nikon Coolpix 5100 as a compact camera to bring when my DSLR would be too big and bulky. The optics are as I would expect from Nikon; they are very good. The features I especially like are the Vibration Reduction and the ability to shoot a movie-- which is surprisingly good. Also, the ability to measure for white balance is nice. I have been in lighting conditions that just didn't look right with auto or the other white balance settings, and having the ability to measure for white balance was fantastic.
The one thing I did not like about this camera is that auto-focus tends to hunt a lot in low-light. By hunt, I mean that sometimes the auto-focus takes about to 3 to 4 seconds to focus on the subject. Other times, it won't be able to auto-focus at all-- even with the AF assist.
Disappointed with the Nikon Coolpix P5100. Slow performer and Lens Error.......2007-12-23
Has anyone else experienced the "LENS ERROR" problem? Does anyone else agree with me that this camera has had way too many problems?
I was a bit disappointed with the Nikon Coolpix P5100. The camera was obviously designed to compete in a specific digital camera class - hi-res, feature-rich, and capable P&S digicams for photography enthusiasts. The P5100 is very user friendly and it consistently delivers good static images. It's an excellent choice for casual photographers who want a camera that's compact enough to drop in a pocket and take along everywhere they go, tough enough to stand up to the rigors of modern life, and cheap enough to be competitive. The P5100's tough as nails magnesium alloy body, nifty rubber clad hand-grip, logical control array, optical viewfinder, hot shoe for i-TTL Nikon Speedlights, and superb ergonomics make this camera an outstanding camera choice for casual shooters, but it's slowness, tendency to clip highlights, and noisy high ISO shots/poor low light performance will hurt its reputation with photography enthusiasts. The P5100's price and features are clearly competitive with the Canon Powershot A650 IS, but its performance just as clearly isn't.
Pros:
User friendly
Compact and lightweight
2.5" LCD screen
Nice ergonomics
Cons:
Slow
Tendency to clip highlights
Poor low-light performance
NOT the best - but Perfect!.......2007-12-22
This camera is the PERFECT camera for those of us who want the following: 1 a small camera easily carried in a laptop bag 2> want manual controls as well as automatic 3> utilizes excellent (and affordable) Nikon addon lens and external flashes 4> Of course takes great pictures and as a kicker has the BEST macro mode of ANY "point and shoot- even has anti pin cushion and barrel distortion mode for PERFECT close in pictures (Like ebay pics)
I am not a novice but not a professional and was looking for a small camera that gave me manual controls. And not only is this camera small but it LOOKS like a camera should (maybe not important to you) but this feels absolutely PERFECT in the hand and I have heard from many pros that the camera that is used is the one that feels the best when taking pictures and this one is perfect.
The P5100 is always compared with the Canon G9 and the G9 DOES take marginally better pictures but the P5100 is A> $100-150 less, B> much smaller and lighter (important to me) and C: has a 30 fps movie mode- the G9 is only 15 fps. Again that is important to me. And to me the pictures it takes are fantastic.
And for those who say this camera cant take good shots of moving objects I am not sure what they are referring to. Just yesterday we were drivng back from Houston and took pictures of car and truck wheels at 80 mph next to us and the camera froze the wheels perfect every time in both manual and sport modes. Maybe it is the version 1.1 firmware that the units ship with now. Also I set the camera to 8 mpixel and I experience only a slight shot to shot lag like 1 second no big deal to me at all.
I took the advice of another reviewer and bought the wide angle lens (very squat and fits the camera perfectly without sticking out too much. and the hot shoe flash- just takes great shots every time of everything.
I Love Canon cameras and have bought many SD700, 850 and own a S3 (great camera) but the P5100 is the one I carry with me and gives me, as a mid ranged experienced user, the ability to shoot almost as a good as a pro, at a fraction of the price and a fraction of the weight and bulk.
Yes having a RAW mode would be better and maybe a 5-7x zoom would be nicer ( a reason to upgrade to the 5200?). Anyway as you can tell I recommend Nikon P5100 highly.
Finally a really good little camera.......2007-12-22
Nikon got it right for a little camera. I also have the Nikon D40 and D40X and pretty much can't tell the difference in the resulting photos from these three wonderful cameras.
I applaud Nikon for putting in a view finder to use in sunlight. For indoors and at night, the LDC screen and the vibration reduction work wonderfully well.
I like the idea of 12 mega pixels so I can crop in the photos. It's almost like having a zoom lens with more power than the 3.5 that comes on this camera. Do be aware that a 12 mega pixel photo that is not cropped will result in a fairly large file size. So, if you plan to do a lot of work with your photos on the computer it is a good idea to have a fast computer with a fairly large hard drive.
This camera is so small and lightweight that it's perfect to keep in my purse for when an unexpected photo opportunity occurs.
GREAT LITTLE THING!!.......2007-12-19
I'm a big fan of Amazon and over the years have bought many things from this site. This is only the second time I've written a review as I feel compelled to share my experience of this wonderful little camera.
First of all, I own a Coolpix 4500, so I am familiar with Nikon. I had it for several years and despite the fun using it and excellent pictures when I used it right, it was ultimately a frustrating camera-too big, very slow, with complex menus too troublesome to access. Like a previous reviewer and his 99x series, I too, found myself hardly using a lot of the available settings on that camera.
So when time came to switch cameras, I vowed to pick a different brand. I have used a Canon A-series from work, used and returned a Casio v7. I wanted something zippy, small. After using these cameras, I realized size was the most important to me, next was the manual controls. I didn't want a straight up point and shoot, I enjoy creative control with my camera. After returning the v7 I realized I wanted it durable.
Canon's A-series cameras did not appeal to me, I do not enjoy AA batteries, I find it cumbersome and awkward. I've used one from work where the lens were starting to have problems and I didn't like the construction of it. The Casio's greatest strengths were its slim build, lens that did not retract, really speedy and great movie mode. Plus it had a 7x zoom and all manual (albeit limited) control. But it was far too fragile and pictures were often soft and blurry in low light.
I went to a local store with these three things in mind:
1. Small/pocketable
2. Full Manual control
3. Good IQ
4. Reasonably priced
I wanted it speedy of course, but figured that I would be happy with somewhere between my old sloooow 4500 and the superfast v7.
The camera guy at the show showed me only two models: the 5100 and the g9. These are the two with fully manual functions. I knew about the Canon-A series but AA batteries are out of the question for me. I had my mind set on venturing beyond Nikon but when I picked up the 5100 it had me hooked. There is nothing like holding this camera in real life and trying it out. Everyone is right when they say this. It is something special.
The G9 I know is supposed to be a superb camera, but I was not paying 500 dollars for it and it was not quite pocketable. I hemmed and hawed about getting another Casio for its small size/manual functions.
Here's my take on the 5100 after having it for nearly three weeks. It is a great little thing. The size is unbelievable for what it can do. The image quality is great-you will notice this immediately. It is consistently well-exposed and sharp. Easily tweaked to fit personal tastes. Its terribly fun to use because there are so many buttons on the outside to easily access settings. No fiddling in menus.
The infamous autofocus lag-well its there, but only in low contrast/light situations. There are ways to go about it that's already been discuss: prefocus, or force centered focus. The latter really makes a difference.
Shutter lag-none. When focused, there is NO apparent shutter lag. I own the camera. I do know what I'm saying.
What the camera does well, it does very well. Size, ergonomics, handling is excellent. Image quality is really great. It is VERY reasonably priced. It has fully manual controls: p,a,s,m modes, this is no token-2-fstop-option. I do not know of any other pocketable camera with such a feature set.
Go pick one up at the store. Try it in your hand. It caught me totally by surprise.
